Cruis'n Is The Worst-Looking Wii Game Ever

First instinct upon seeing the cover art was "no, this is not going to end well". Now we've got some Crus'n screens...this does not look like it's going to end well. Unless this is some kind of joke (oh haha we can make a 2006 Ubisoft Wii racer too). But it's probably not. Midway, seriously, what the fuck is this? I know that graphics aren't everything, but...they're still something.

Eds Note: Seems to be some conjecture over the source of these images. Mention of Fast & the Furious, and of arcade games. For the record, and for those curious, these screenshots were provided by Midway as part of their press pack for the title.

  • I thought that was a cellphone game for a second there....

  • I thought it was a n64 game you downloaded on the wii. This is horrible. I knew the wii sucked but not that bad... poor wii getting crap from everybody now... Don't worry little fella one day you will have a game company that knows how to code for the game cube 1.5

  • at first i was going to say it's just a thumbnail blown up...but the more i look at it, the more i think that's a real screenshot...good god

  • Heh, i couldn't stop laughing when i saw this. What makes it even better are the comparison shots:

  • This seriously looks like a N64 port. Ouch...

  • That's just... sad.

  • @Balance_In_Life:

Looks worse than a N64 port...

  • Image of Bellamy Bellamy at 03:41 AM on 08/23/07 *

    @Balance_In_Life:

But did the N64 have waggle? I don't think so!

  • That makes me cringe.

  • Aren't third parties even TRYING with the Wii? Jeez.

  • Uhhh....
    It's an early build?
    *sigh* I know

  • Welcome to next gen, Wii style!

  • Sure it's not a ds game? (!)

  • What the hell. There isn't much else to be said.

  • @Allcars:
They already do. They're called Nintendo.

    clicky.

  • Those picture really made a heated debate at Neogaf yesterday lol, there bitter taste can still be felt...

  • haha, well there you have it, midway just wants grab cash from all those 12 year olds with a wii who will beg their parents for it until they are annoyed into purchasing it, that and the senior citizens who never got to trick out their own import rice rockets, and soccer moms that spend their orange money on it, now what will those kids quench their vitamin C deficiency with during half-time soccer moms?

  • @CIRRUS:
They shouldn't even look close to each other, let alone the Wii one lookin' worse

    WTF

  • damn, this thread's already got more wii-hate than the sales-breaking one earlier tonight! i just hope this game bombs like it should, and if ports are the flavor of the year, i hope something quality like Okami comes as well.
man, that does look pretty bad for a non-VC title. I knew Midway got lazy since they tried selling me "Joust in glorious 1080p!".

  • I need a real confirmation here,is this really made by Midway? It must be a joke, but seriously though... Midway?

  • feck me, that's hilarious! For the love of Ninty, DON'T release this game.

  • heyhey, let's not forget that the Wii is the most sold next gen console people! That has to mean that it is good, good like McDonalds food...

  • looks like the dev of this game just tried to make some quick cash with this garbage.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 04:02 AM on 08/23/07 *

It was the worst arcade game ever too.

Graphics aren't everything, but they're far more than they're cracked up to be (which is why I've never bought into this whole "graphics don't matter" Wii philosophy). I can't understand why the majority of Wii games look worse than GameCube games. Some are inferior to N64 titles.

Graphics don't matter? Try playing Bioshock with Super Nintendo capabilities. Graphics are more than pretty. They are AI, they are atmosphere, they are what make games great and I'm getting sick and tired of feeling like I'm somehow a "lesser" gamer because I actually value decent graphics in a game.

Nintendo has succeeded in the "looks don't matter" department where so many others have failed. But, like I've stated previously in this comment and many comments before -- looks are just the beginning. Processing power can create a far better game in far more ways than some crappy last-gen joke of a title.

Imagine Ocarina of Time running on the Super Nintendo. Graphics aside, it wouldn't do the job would it? There is absolutely no way it would work. Cruis'n is just another jagged example of everything that's wrong with the Wii.

  • Where are the gameplay evangelists when you need'em ?

  • @wfrantic:

Sometimes you have to pick your battles.
Who would try to defend this?

  • Wow...it really...REALLY looks like a DS game. I hope for their sake that it is.

On second thought, nah. I still wouldn't buy it.

  • I seriously don't understand why people hate the Wii. yes, the graphics are no way near 360 or PS3 but still pretty good as we can see from game such as Zelda. I really annoy with company which just relase game in a hurry on the Wii just because it is selling like crazy at the moment. and for me, they are the one who responsible for the reason why some gamers dislike the Wii.

  • A bit unrelated, but still:

All those "waggle" and sarcastic "next gen Wii style" comments are annoying me a bit.

Yes, the Wii isn't a 360/PS3 in terms of hardware, and yes, in some bad cases the controls really just waggle a bit, without adding something to a game.

But do we constantly need to downplay the entire console for just those reasons? I'm a wii-owner, though not a fanboy by any means, and I didn't buy it for any revolutionary control scheme. I just bought it for Mario, Smash, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Tales of and more. Not a lot more, but that's enough for me. As long as there are these games, beautiful in their own way (graphics in some, gameplay in others), do we really need to emphasize in EACH AND EVERY Wii-thread that the Wii is a gamecube 1.5, or a waggle thingy?

It's brough gaming some fresh attention, it's innovative and a first great step in making people understand gaming can be fun for everyone.

Can't the makers of these repetitive jokes acknowledge that? The 360/PS3 are by no means obsolete, or "losing", no matter how popular the Wii is, so there's no really no reason to keep justifying your preference by bashing on what's popular.

I'm not saying no criticism is in order, since it always is, but taking every single chance to lash out at the Wii's graphics (even though, like in this case, it really has nothing to do with the Wii's hardware limitations, just with lazy devs) is a bit pathetic.

Not that any of these arguments haven't been made thousands of times before.

  • This is pretty much a port of the crappy arcade games known as fast & the furious. The game can....and I mean shouldnt be played on arcades.

  • @SANADA
"I just bought it for Mario, Smash, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Tales of and more. "
and you say you aren't a Fan boy...

Look we put down the console because its just a gamecube 1.5 it sell the most, because look at the world its full of stupid people. Thats the real market that game industries are trying to tap. Look at wow the most popular mmorpg in the world. Do you know what its popular because blizzard has word of mouth and that tapped the stupid crowd.

I'm not saying the wii isn't fun for the first week, im just saying its needs more then a controller to bring it up to todays standards.

  • LEADERZ0RZ: "I thought that was a cellphone game for a second there...."

It reminds me of racing games back on my N-Gage, execpt my N-Gage had more cars and environment objects on screen

  • but but but it's the gameplay that really matters!

  • @Sanada: Well i can only speak for myself when i tell you that i'm a bit worried about the rampaging success of the Wii. I haven't anything against Nintendo, i grew up with them and they taught me to love videogames, but that old ninty seems buried and dead (a quick n64+GC «or was it microsoft+sony?» 1-2 punch did the job unfortunately), and i wouldnt like for anything in this world to see the whole games industry converge towards the Wii-vision.

So yeah, i'm all for poor third party efforts on the Wii, sadly, tough times ask for tougher measures.

  • @Allcars: You forget the part about WoW being the most polished and fun MMO around.

  • Image of Sloopydrew Sloopydrew at 04:31 AM on 08/23/07 *

    @Sanada:

"I'm a wii-owner, though not a fanboy by any means, and I didn't buy it for any revolutionary control scheme. I just bought it for Mario, Smash, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Tales of and more. Not a lot more, but that's enough for me."

Okay, so what you're saying is that you're a fanboy. Maybe you don't know what defines a boy that is a fan, but someone who buys a Wii not for graphics, not for control scheme but merely for Mario, Smash, Zelda and Tales would be the dictionary definition of a fanboy. If that word is in the dictionary in the first place. Nothing wrong with being a fanboy, but to say you're not one by "any means" only to go on to describe yourself as a fanboy by all means is a bit goofy.

  • @ALLCARS

You still really haven't argued against Sanada's point, just reinforced yours. Just because the Wii is a slightly upgraded Gamecube (and it is, there's no doubting that), how does that suddenly make it a gimmick and not worth my time? While it's true that the Wii loses it's appeal after several days, it's not because the Wii is a poor console. The initial lack of quality games really hurt the Wii. However, I've been playing my Wii a lot recently due to the recent flow of quality games, and the impending release of several huge titles. Never once have I turned off my Wii because 'it's not up to standards'. I didn't stop playing my Wii because the 'fat cats at the top of the corporation' are trying to market the console to a different market. That's pretty stupid reasoning.

  • And this surprises us, HOW?! It's Cruis'n, people! This is PAR for the course. :p

  • @Leaderz0rz: First thought that entered my head too - its a cell phone game! Heck, thats actually insulting to some cell phone games...

  • i just threw up a in my mouth a little bit

  • wow, talk about lame. wtfh? no sale from me.

  • @Allcars:

So having your eye on a couple of games makes you a fanboy?

As for the rest of your argument: yes, the world is full of stupid people. Can't argue with that. But if you're trying to say that the fact a gamecube 1.5 sells well is proof of that, I believe you're wrong. It's a platform, with games coming out for it. How much hardware dev momentum its got is not relevant when gaming interests are concerned. The DS is selling like crazy, and it has a great library already. Are all those people idiots, or are these people that are just looking for a nice gaming experience, caring less about graphics and more about gameplay?

NOTE: Saying I "don't really care about graphics" does not imply I have no minimum standards, nor does it say great graphics are evil either. It's just saying that gameplay and a story (or whatever game aspect you dig most) have started to matter more, and that graphics can be good if they "fit" a game, despite the fact that they might not be the best of the best.

"I'm not saying the wii isn't fun for the first week, im just saying its needs more then a controller to bring it up to todays standards."

No, it just needs good games. And what's good isn't determined by hardware alone, it's mostly determined by the fantasy and skill of the devs.

  • Graphics do matter. But only so much. To draw a player into the game, things have to look believable and realistic. With greater graphic capabilities, comes more atmosphere and immersion. Metroid Prime is immersive and atmospheric, but if you've played Bioshock, you know that with its better graphics the world seems much more believable than Metroid.
That doesn't mean that a game on the Wii, based on graphics alone, can't be more immersive than its next-gen counterparts, its just immersive in different ways. With the PS3 and 360, the graphics bring in both the immersion and the mood of the game. With the Wii, the immersion is even moreso because of the wii-mote. But because of the Wii's graphic capabilities, it lacks in atmosphere, and since most developers don't seem to want to think of realistic ways to use the wii-mote, were left with last-gen games with waggle gimmics. Where's my First Person Silent Hill/Resident Evil in which my wii-mote is my flash light, my knife and my gun? Wheres the games that are supposed to make feel like I'm swinging a sword and not just my flicking wrist to make the character do it for me? Wheres the effort? I own a Wii, but I can't help but feel I've been swapped out for someone who would rather have a remote balanced on his head than have a rich and fuffilling experience.
In a way, as it stands, Nintendo have got what they wanted. They have a system thats fun to play for short periods of time, lots of mini-games, and alot of family oriented games. But the wii has more potential than that, and it dissappointing to think were going to have to put up with all the cookie cutter mini-games, edu-tainment crap, and last gen remakes and getting maybe one or two games a year worth playing for more than a week.
I feel as if Nintendo are looking past me to grandma with dollar signs in thier eyes and its depressing for a gamer who wants games with substance instead of some stupid fitness training crap.

    _---_END OF OFF-TOPIC RANT_---_

  • I love it when a 3rd party dev makes a shitty game and it's suddenly the hardware's fault. When GUN came out on the 360 nobody was saying that the 360 wasn't capable of better graphics.

  • @wfrantic:

I agree on that, but that's why I mentioned I believe the 360/PS3 aren't obsolete. I wouldn't like the whole world following Wii's vision either, since every platform has it's gems, and each of them would be sorely missed if any vision "won".

But as long as the other platforms are there, the Wii is just a nice addition, isn't it?

  • Why is this game running at 320x240?.... With no AA? Maybe its a Wii Ware release?..

  • @Sloopydrew:

    Nah, that's just not true.

When you buy a console, you look at what games you're possibly interested in, and then decide. These are the games that'd make me buy a Wii, and I can make a similar list for every other platform out there.

I'm not saying these games are the reason I bought a Wii-and-not-a-PS3.
