Wii Won't Play Nice with Projectors...But Not Why You Think

While Nintendo's Wii was the hot ticket on the E3 showfloor last week, we couldn't help but notice one potential snag for a few: The 3D positional sensor's cord probably won't be long enough to work with many front projection television-based home theaters.

The Wii uses a small, pencil-thick sensor that sticks to the front of your television to detect the position of the Wii's controller. We asked one of the Nintendo booth staffers about the length of the cable that connects the sensor to the Wii console and they estimated it at around eight- to ten-feet in length. That means that for most with front-projection home theater setups—including at least one of the Kotaku staffers—the Wii will have to sit on the opposite side of the room from the rest of the A/V equipment. (Most people who use front projectors keep their A/V equipment in the back of their viewing room next to the projector, rather than in the front next to the screen.)

Unless Nintendo offers long sensor cable lengths—twenty feet or more—most projector owners will have to purchase out-sized audio and video cables to connect the Wii—and it will still be on the wrong side of the room.
