This is it, kids. The start of a new era of video gaming has begun as Nintendo has shipped Wii Fit in Japan. The 8800 yen (about $80 US) game with its custom controller, the Wii balance board, was revealed at E3 2007, with some expecting it to act as the Wii's answer to Nintendo DS-selling mega-hit Brain Age. North American and European gamers won't have access to Wii Fit until sometime in 2008, but Japan is burning calories as we speak (or will be within hours).
We'll know next Wednesday how well Wii Fit performed in its debut week as Media Create sales numbers are released. Friendly wagers are certainly welcome in the comments. For those with the means, did you pick it up? Import it? Let us know what you think, if so.

I got it, but I don't think, so I don't apply.
Okay, I'm lying about both points. I don't have it, and I do think.
But anyways, I bet 10 kotakupoints I never bid back during the E3 thing that WiiFit will sell 35k.
... I would say its a niche title. But this is Japan, and this is Nintendo. Umm I dunno.. I don't think it will be number 1 on the software chart. Lets shoot for 5.
About $80 bucks? I wager it won't do that well, but it'll sell ok. Then again, I could be wrong and it'll be the biggest thing since who knows what.
This title is clearly aimed at casuals. Can you imagine this game on N64 or Gamecube?
I'll bet you a gentleman it's over 200k.
Thats because they need to do more development to support the extra 100 lbs on average it will expect in america. ^.^ , i'm skinny as a pole! im a gamer, i dont have time to eat. Someone mail me one already.
I'm just sitting here watching, can't really tell which way its gonna go but it most likely will sell a good amount.
@Torgen:
Maybe if it was actually a real game it would. Where is the Wii PowerPad?
When's the 360 port coming out? The one that comes bundled with a red couch and a fat-ass bag of chips and a gallon of Pepsi?
@DigitalHero: Remember that in Japan Wii Sports wasn't a pack-in and the Wii wasn't any cheaper than the foreign versions that came with it included. It sold 2M+ there as a standalone game.
I'd say with the Wii base it's going to sell pretty well. The question is, is it any good? And like others said, it kind of fits into Japan to try games like this, but if it's popular there chances are it will be popular everywhere.
@K-Squad:
That's a pretty good point even if you don't count obesity - I'm skinny as a pole too, but also about 25 cm taller and 20 Kg heavier than the average Japanese male. You'd hope they would take a pretty good range of weights into account, but every time I try to fit into some sort of vehicle, I'm reminded how design is definitely biased towards averages. ;P
@Torgen:
True, but WiiSports didn't have limitations.
Richard Simmons > Wii Fit
Richard doesn't have a weight limit of 300LBS, Wii Fit does. =P
@Torgen: At the time, it was also one of only two games worth buying on the Wii. Now that there are 5 games worth buying on the Wii, Wii Fit has some major competition.
@Atilla_the_Nun: Pepsi comes in gallons now? HOT DAMN! I'M THERE!
@Green-clad gamer dude: How about since the Wii?
All in jest folks.
I bet 100 KP that it'll do better than Galaxy's first week, unfortunately.
I facepalmed harder at E3 for Wii Fit than I did for Genji 2. The worst thing about it is that I know it'll do well, regardless of every feeling in my body that this is the first of many 'gimmicks' that bring my Wii fears to light.
I suppose that's the price we pay for other people having different opinions from me. I blame you all.
I can't really see it catching on much. probably around 50k at most. I don't think most casuals would see it as a must buy.
I think marketing is key here. If it is advertised as a game, it might do okay. If it is marketed as a way to get fit or stay healthy, it might pull in people that don't buy games normally. Then it could be huge.
I can't wait to hear some impressions of this thing. Could be overrated though. DDR is probably way more effective.
@Heliophage:
Agreed, i feel like these little new genre games are unique and all, but theyre making so much money that all i can do is excercise. Pretty soon self help books are going to be telling us to play video games. lol
It's going to start slow, maybe only 200k. But it's going to have legs and in the end, it's going to sell a million units within six months or less..and that's just for Japan.
@DigitalHero: The 300lb weight limit won't be a big deal in Japan. I'd expect a sturdier version to be necessary for America. Plus, it's not like it's fine at 299lb15oz and breaks instantly at 300lb.
I wish you good luck Wii Fit!
I think it will go all Wii play and sell at least 250K+ a month from now until we are all absorbed into the new Nintenation.
@Green-clad gamer dude:
80 bucks is nearly the price of a standard game in Japan. This is not premium pricing.
It. Will. Sell.
I think it's way to expensive...we'll have to see...
@perrinbar: People won't buy Wii Fit just for the board (the way people buy Wii Play for the extra controller) until there are other games that use the board.
I'm betting it won't sell out first week. It may do well however.
On a side note, I only NOW found out about the "Rick Rolled" phenomenon, and have to fight the urge to place a tinyurl to it. Some things are just too weird NOT to do.
I kinda thought about picking this up today (shops open in about an hour or so), but it just seems too limited. Yourself Fitness for PS2 (and PC) strikes me as a much better option for using a gaming system to lose weight.
YF gets you moving around much more and burning a lot of calories. A few adjustments to my eating habits and YF 6 days a week (30-minute workouts) got me to drop 10 kilos (22 pounds) in 67 days. I don't think Wii Fit can deliver those kinds of results.
(All that said, I'm sure it'll sell heaps. Yodobashi Camera already has it listed with the "sorry, we don't have any more" icon on their site.)
My wife stopped playing the Wii after we got GH3 and Rock Band.
if they market this well it has the potential to sell in huge numbers.
My guess it is it will sell about the same as Mario Paint did for the SNES. I had the game, and it went for $70-ish if I recall. Its a very similar concept and target audience in my mind, coming with a mouse and hard pad. I have NO idea what the actual sales numbers were on Paint, but I wager it was pretty good considering the popularity of the SNES at the time.
100k the first week if Nintendo's lucky.
Look. Wii sales have not exactly been on fire lately; that's a fact. And it's not like people don't know this game is coming out. As the game has approached, Wii sales have continued dropping from the 80-100k/week range to the 50k/week range. That doesn't show a whole lot of enthusiasm for Nintendo's upcoming titles.
Dragon Quest IV will continue to be the #1 game next week.
@CausticSaint: A camera site is selling Wii Fit? Japan is a weird place.
@Ghede: I knew about it, but I never knew the name. And just for you, your name in my reply is a link to the video.
Oh, my 35k was for the first couple of days.
Add-on perhipherals rarely do too well.
There are the exceptions, but anything that isn't included with the system usually falls to the side eventually....
I'm guessing over 300.000. [www.cubed3.com],000_in_Japan
@JosJos: That's retail pre-orders. Not gamer preorders. It's possible nobody will pick one up, and stores will be stuck with hundreds of copies of wii fit.
This isn't going to be a huge hit in the US, but I think this is going to be a big hit in Japan. Look at all the DS training games that have done so well over there. This isn't just a niche market anymore.
Hmm, part of the success of the Wii is due to the relative low-cost of the console. WiiFit is $80 and isn't even a game, so we're in unknown territory. It will be interesting to see if 3rd parties give any support for the controller for actual games.
I'm predicting it will sell well, but with that said, I have no idea why . . .
@keiichimorisato: Rumble Pack did pretty well for Nintendo in the N64 days, but you didn't need it for anything. If people make games that can be played without the board but are better with it, it stands a better chance as a standalone. If they never decide to sell it standalone, there probably won't be many games that use it, but it won't need there to be.
When does it come out in the US? In time for Christmas?
Bah, Wiifit is gimped compared to the 5 am Pre-load at UPS with 25,000 packages and only 10 guys on shift during the holiday season.
I've already lost 20 lbs since I started.
By the way, Oahu got Wii shipments yesterday and today. I should know, I had to unload fifty boxes of Wiis, nunchucks, and jackets.
@OGHowie: why?
You can get GH3 on the wii too.
My mates been playing it for ages now, he hasn't played his 360 in a while.
Is that wrong? D:
I'm betting 85,000 ... the continual sales from there.
I really don't know what to think when it comes to Wii Fit.
It seems to me that a part the problem is trying to get other developers to make software for it. Another thing is that this is a pretty expensive peripheral and it seems like most of Nintendo's gaming peripherals turn out to good, but only used for one thing and that's it and then it just fades out of existence.
I think it would perhaps be a cool idea for developers to make Wii Fit games as Wii ware titles so that development will be inexpensive, the cost will be affordable and players have immediate access to downloading and playing them unless of course memory storage space is a problem.
This is going to be a life saver! Most people here in the states may laugh at it ... just don't laugh when you're in the hospital for some weight related issues.
I wouldn't buy one, but I'd play with one for a Wave Race Wii game. Shifting balance and using the Wiimote as a handlebar seems entertaining.
For all those fat ass Japanese ... oh wait!
@Heliophage: You would probably be expected to kneel on the board for that, which would conveniently place my eyes back in the viewable range for my reap projection TV.
Here's a question: Does the board plug into a wiimote, or does it talk directly to the Wii? Because Bluetooth has a 7 object limit, right? So 4-player anything that uses both the wiimote and the balance board wouldn't work in the latter case.
I dunno... Wii Sports is a video game masquerading as exercise, which is awesome. Wii Fit is excercise masquerading as a video game... which may suck.
@Not Ashcraft. Kirbytheslayer:
Yodobashi Camera is a chain in Japan that sells tons of electronics that aren't camera related.
participate in vigorous workouts such as "leaning to the left"
I don't track the housewife market that well, but I bet it'll be a flop from the standpoint people think it'll do well. Expect slow sales unless all those homemaking CMs payout. It's just another gimmick -- but Nintendo thrives on gimmicks. Also I say the Wii tanks in 2008 as the gimmick doesn't hold up in the 'sit-down' console market as well as portables.
@LemonproX: Reminds me of the Universal Remonster episode of ATHF with Meatwad watching a kids show:
"This is your left, lean to your left, this is your right, you're gonna die!"
I've been crying doom to everything new Nintendo tries, but the damn things keep proving me wrong. I still haven't learnt my lesson and will have to agree with you naysayers. It's just one idea gone a little to far, Nintendo should be careful how they push their luck.
I'll guess around 70K for the first week. After that it will depend on whether or not it's any good. Given Nintendo's track record, I'll assume it's at least pretty good, so it should sell steadily for a long, long time.
A new era in gaming though? ^^; It's just an extension of the "training" games that have done so well on the DS. Hardly revolutionary, but if the product is actually fun and/or useful, it will sell.
I live in Japan and have access not only to the Wii Fit, but also to the Wii which is in constant supply at any video game shop I go to. I don't have a Wii and have zero interest in the Wii fit. My whole apartment is the size of my living room back home in Chicago. I don't have room to use this thing.
Anyway, I think it'll do well with the endless hordes of women here who have Wiis and are constantly on "daieto" (diet) despite being thin. 'Cute' rules in Japan and exercising with a Wii is...cute.
@Not Ashcraft. Kirbytheslayer:
Yeah, weird. In the USA, Radio Shack would never sell anything other than radios. And you certainly can't buy a camera at CompUSA. Crazy Japanese.
I'm really looking for someone with hands/feet-on experience. I'm sure it will be a top seller for a few weeks, but it's a big peripheral and all the marketing so far has been really sterile and unappealing.
@Not Ashcraft. Kirbytheslayer:
As has already been said, Yodobashi Camera sells a lot more than just cameras. They (and Bic Camera) are two of the biggest electronics c
