Line Rider Coming To DS, Wii

That amazing little Flash toy Line Rider, which began its life as a project for an illustration class according to creator Bostjan Cadez is due to be ported to the Nintendo DS and the Wii. Line Rider is coming this spring courtesy of inXile entertainment with "new added features". What looks like a deceptively simple non-game can become a powerfully fun tool in the right hands. Don't believe me? Check out this amazing clip of Line Rider officially "jumping the shark."

Let's hope inXile takes advantage of the online features of both the DS and the Wii, allowing users to share drawings over the internet.

INXILE ENTERTAINMENT AQUIRES CONSOLE RIGHTS TO HIT INTERNET GAME LINE RIDER !

Nintendo DS & Nintendo Wii Games Scheduled For Spring 2007

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Dec. 20, 2006 - Having already amassed a worldwide cult following on the internet, inXile entertainment announced today that it has acquired the rights to the hugely addictive 'toy' Line Rider and that the popular game will soon be available for both the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Since its first appearance on the Web (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/40255643/) on September 23, 2006, Line Rider has attracted over 15 million viewers to date and has spawned over 11,000 video posts on YouTube.com. Anticipated to ship in Spring 2007, Line Rider for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii from inXile entertainment will retain all the fun and thrills of the addictive Web version, but will also include new added features.

Line Rider has received accolades from media worldwide. Time.com commented, 'Line Rider is becoming one of the most popular flash games on the web', and The Wall Street Journal called Line Rider 'Online gamers' new addiction'. The Toronto Star noted that Line Rider was 'a deceptively simple online game' and stated that it has become "the latest Internet addiction".

"I have been around the interactive entertainment industry long enough to have seen similar phenomenon like Tetris and Bejeweled become massive international hits, and Line Rider has all the elements to do the same," said Brian Fargo, chief executive officer of inXile entertainment. "Line Rider is like a fully animated Etch-A-Sketch and will be perfect for the Nintendo DS and Wii."

Fargo continued, "The amazing thing is that it has appeal to almost everyone. I've watched 6 year-olds and adults play Line Rider and both were thoroughly entertained and captivated. Easy to pick up and play, and highly addictive, we are very pleased to be bringing Line Rider to video game players."

Described as a 'toy' by its creator Bostjan Cadez, Line Rider allows players to construct their own track filled with as many ramps, hills, and jumps as they can imagine utilizing a pencil tool. Once the player is done creating their course, they can send a virtual sledder down the route until he wipes out. The possibilities in Line Rider are only limited by physics and the player's imagination with an almost endless number of variations and replay.

"Line Rider began its life as a project I did for illustration class," commented Bostjan Cadez, who created Line Rider in his native Slovenia. "As much as people see it as a game I think of it as a toy because there is no score and no one wins or loses while playing Line Rider. I'm looking forward to working with inXile entertainment on the new Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii versions as they will bring added gameplay and features."

  • Can anybody explain to me what part of this game is supposed to be fun? I love these kind of simple little games, but I can't find ANYTHING to like about this game. It's completely pointless. You draw lines and watch a guy slide down it in the most uninteresting ways. I feel like I must be missing something.. Like if I actually tried hard enough I could maybe make something cool happen.. but nope.. it's still just.....stupid.

  • I love linerider so I hope this is awesome. Does anyone else predict very shaky lines on the Wii?

Anyway, great to see the guy is achieving success, he came up with a great idea and executed it briliantly. InXile sound a bit dodgy though - The Bards Tale and my personal favourite game to look out for in 2007, "Game X". Not quite the rep, say, Capcom, Nintendo or even Zoo Digital have, is it?

  • Wow, that rules so much. It is so cool that even though it will be on the DS, they still released the new Beta 2 verison. This is hardcore, I love it.

  • The clip looks kind of interesting until you consider that it probably took hours to make in a most tedious and boring kind of way. Not fun AT ALL.

  • Umm... Just a thought I'll leave to brew in you guys' minds:

    -----------------[Opera browser supports flash]---------------------

  • I dunno Collins. If they're going to sell the game then they will probably make the interface better and add some cool features.

Honestly I don't understand the hype about this game. Simple games like this were common when I was learning how to program 10+ years ago. I've played games similar and I've played A LOT better.

  • I may have tipped kotaku on this, if they got my e-mail, or they may have simply found the article. before they got my e-mail. :P anyway, my entire school was obsessed about this game(becuase it wasn't blocked on our internet filters for quite awhile), as well as a bunch of hacked versions of it. I don't know if the original creator or the company who just bought the rights to it appreciates it. but heres the link anyway : www.lineflyer.com

Its not the most high quality site, but the hacked versions are kinda cool. but loose their appeal within about 10 minutes of trying them.

  • Yeah, I'm not saying it's the greatest game ever; it's very simple but it's pretty sweet and a full package could really build on a great idea that, due to the limitations of flash development, is just good atm.

All I was implying by suggesting that people play it on Opera is that if you think it sucks and won't be worth a nickel on the Wii, give it a go on Opera and maybe it'll be better off thanks to the remote. The DS version is obviously going to better than the flash one because you'll have far greater control of your drawing.

Anyway, it's early days yet. Let's wait for some screens and playtests before we judge it. Besides, it might even get cancelled before it get's finished, as so many games like this (sadly(?)) do.

  • hang in a second. Why were both those last posts in bold?

    Did i do that?

  • Think I just solved the BOLD html issue.

  • This went around...oh, hold on.

This went around my workplace like wildfire and was gone the next day. Very cute little app, but I wouldn't say there's a whole game here.

  • if you don't see the interest people have in this game, STOP EFFING POSTING ABOUT IT.

  • Fun game, but the fact that I could erase drove me crazy. It did give me an immense respect in the people that could pull off those crazy vids without an eraser.

  • MobileMilitia: Respect +1

  • Nah Collins I totally understand what you meant. I should have split my post into two. You had a great point and idea. Why buy a game you could play for free? I was just thinking it would probably be enhanced in some way to make it worth the money.. If not.. why bother?

  • Why should I Mobile? I find bitching about it plenty interesting. Hows that for logic?

  • Watching a rollerskate go down a 2x4 is exactly as fun as this game.

  • If you were a techy during the dot com boom then you played about a million of these little games and honestly this one ranks somewhere between the middle and bottom of the pack.

Otherwise..ehh..whatever.. if you're a newb I completely understand why you like it..

  • If you go to the official site you can erase.

^ check out the "Jagged Peak Adventure", I thought it was more impressive than the one posted above.

  • "It's Etch-a-Sketch for the YouTube Generation!"

    Hahahahahahahahahahahah shut up!

  • Can anybody explain to me what part of this game is supposed to be fun?

Within this simple little game you're supposed to create an elaborate setup. The fun from this game is the same kind of fun people get from playing GMod or creating warthog jumps in Halo...

  • XBOX360 = Geometry Wars
    PS3 = Fl0w
    DS/Wii = LineRider

  • matters, if you amuse yourself by trolling a comments section of a blog, that's fine. hell, i'm not even excited about this game since i hadn't heard of till this post. and now that i've heard of it, i would rather play the flash version anyway. so you can go and start your 'oh my god why do people like this game that i don't' blog, but don't expect it to halt sales or interest in the title.

  • Just so I can understand how this works. If you criticize a popular game for being boring and lame, does that make you cool and interesting?

I don't think this game is great but others obviously do. If I claim to not understand its appeal, isn't the problem with my perception?

  • This flash game I want to see on the DS ... FUN AND HARD(not as hard but you have to think) .. Johnny Rocket Fingers... Go Newgrounds!!

  • Mobile you think I'm trolling to stop sales of this game? Come on dude get real. I wasn't trolling at first anyway I was HONESTLY asking WTF was fun about this game. I dicked around with it and it was cute for a while but this game isn't original and it isn't great.. If you've been around you have seen a TON of these games and there are MUCH better ones out there.

If it had a better interface (why not right click to drag the box and left click to draw instead of fucking switching back and forth?!?!?!?!??!?! maybe a limitation of flash but you get my drift. It can be 100x better.) and throw in a few cool things you can actually make the guy do besides jump from one fucking line to another and THEN we will talk about it being fun.

  • rluzin once again you think I critize this game to be popular? jesus christ where do you retards come from?

I'll critize a game if I fucking want you sure as hell do it you eleteist bastard.

And explain to me how this game is popular? I read damn near every major game site, blog and tech site out there and I don't ever remember reading about this game until now. Maybe somebody posted about it on kotaku or joystiq or slashdot or any of the other popular sites but I sure as hell don't remember seeing it.

Oh wait maybe it is popular among the teenagers on myspace. That would explain it.

  • You want a fun simple game that should come to the wii and ds go play that game with all of the dots and the lines connecting them and you have to drag the dots around to untangle the lines so that none of them intersect. Now THAT game is fun, has a point and would be perfect for the DS and Wii.

  • The game's fun for people, like me, who enjoy creating absurdly complex tracks and such. Its sort of the appeal of that old BridgeBuilder game.

The flash one is a bit rough, but I'd love to see a more fleshed-out and less glitchy version on the DS.

  • Well I think it's a good idea. Although, putting it on the Wii isnt too smart as it'll be harder to draw, but on the DS is a great idea! InXile and *fsk, the creator, will be happy as this game is a very famous flashtoy on the net. I think they should come up with a colour edition for Line Rider, then it'd look more realistic.
