Commodore 64 Joins The Wii Virtual Console?

In the most recent issue of Nintendo Power, it has been reported that the Commodore 64 will join the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, MSX and Turbografx 16 as one of the available platforms for the Wii Virtual Console.

Gamasutra's re-reporting of the Virtual Console update says that no game titles are specified but that "indications" are that classic Epyx titles, games like California Games, Summer Games, Impossible Mission, and Jumpman, may make an appearance. We'll wait for an official announcement and keep our fingers crossed for a downloadable version of M.U.L.E.

Report: Commodore 64 Titles Join Virtual Console [Gamasutra]

UPDATE: User Ferry wrote in to say that the Nintendo Power editors were speculating that C64 games will hit VC Land and that a handful of Epix games were being "reworked" for the Wii. From his e-mail: "A Nintendo Power editor merely speculated the announced C64 games would come to the Virtual Console, when in fact two are being remade for the PSP, DS, and Wii. To quote: 'System 3 will release Impossible Mission on PSP & DS in January 2007, 3 weeks later it will come to Wii, with California Games for PSP & DS in May 2007, and again 3 weeks later it will come to Wii.' Hope this helps." Thanks for the info, Ferry!

  • How many Wii points will the games cost, and how much is that in $$$?

  • I'm not that familar with the C64 but I had a 10 year love affair with the Amiga. I went through the A-500 up to the A-3000, even the A-1200s were cool and stable to boot.

Anyway, how about some Amiga love on the VC? Can I get Lamatron and Turrican? How about Gods and Agony or the uber hard Shadow of the Beast? Out of this World and Flashback would be great too...

  • If anything, the C64 games better cost 50 cents each. You know f'dat, FREE!! I like how Nintendo is gathering up all the old school systems but lets be realistic here. There are games that are 20+ years old and lost there 'fun' playability over the years. Geez, the last time I played a C64 was back in elementary school during the early 90's and the games were a POS.

  • I'm not exceedingly well-versed with the C64, but I hope you have your snark repellent suit on at the moment, Understar. I'm sure you'll be snidely reprimanded for suggesting that elderly games aren't all necessarily as brilliant as we recall them.

Apparently, the American exchange rate on Wii Points is 10 cents = 1 point. (Hence how "2000" Wii points = $20.00) I can't see myself being too interested in the C64 titles for more than $2 or so dollars considering I have no nostalgia feelings conerning them and I already have a bit of a problem with the NES games being $5 themselves. Unrealistic of me? Yes. I supppose I shouldn't bitch much though, since Nintendo has charged largely unjustified prices for previously re-released NES titles...

I'm wondering how obscure the Wii's Virtual Console will eventually become. I'm also wondering if Nintendo will eventually authorize the backcatalog of Game Boy games onto the system as time marches on. Presuming that Nintendo actually does continue with this "third pillar" bollocks concerning the DS and releases an authentic successor in the Game Boy family, what are the chances of it being cartridge based? Following Nintendo's natural technological progression, this hardware would presumably be on par with the present PSP (if not a bit weaker), so it would appear that the reign of the cartridge is drawing to a close. Could the VC possibly be a venue for easily distributing these titles to be played on this supposed handheld? (And hopefully the Wii itself as well)

Hell, I'd just like to see Game Boy games in the VC. Is that such a crime ha?

  • Yeah, I played a C64 back in elementary. Mostly Wheel of Fortune.

  • http://hol.abime.net/ the largest database for amiga games I've ever seen. I found a near arcade quality TMNT, Afterburner, R-Type, Gods, Agony and so many other games there it's ridiculous.

Anyway, I agree that c64/Gameboy/amiga games should be dirt cheap. Some of these games have not aged well at all. But others are still a blast to play. I also believe the cartridges are coming to an end. If Nintendo could distribute GameboyNext games through the Wii to the unit, it would be similar to an Ipod setup. Not a bad idea provided I can back up that data.

VC can be a great asset in the long run provided Nintendo gives gamers a diverse back catalog. They are already off to a good start but I still want to see SonyImageSoft (for the original Batman and the Batman Returns...wishful thinking I know) Capcom, Konami, Rare, Square, Enix, Taito and Data East in the mix just to name a few.

  • I could either get a $5 fast food meal that'll last me for about 10 minutes tops or pay $5 for an NES that will last me for at he very least least 10 hours over the period of 5 years.

Quit bitching about the prices, theyre well worth it for what youre paying for. If you have any qualms about paying that much for a downloadable game from past systems, then it's obviously not that important to you.

  • *Still waiting to hear "Sega Saturn games now available!"

    NiGHTS = <3

  • Hmm, now this is actually interesting.

My big question is, how realistic is the SID playback? I'm a huge SID fanatic (to the extent that I want to get an Elektron Monomachine) so being able to relive some of that Old School Rob Hubbard goodness would be very interesting to me.

  • I am looking forward to Impossible Mission, I used to love the ominous way that game used to start. With the mysterious voice "Stay awhile...Stay Forever!!!"

And Intellectualdiot, I don't think the next GB will be optical media like the PSP. Personally, I think cart based technology is here to stay. Solid state memory uses less battery power since there's no drive that has to read a disc. Plus, nowadays you can get gigs of memory on a tiny chip, and whenever a sucessor to the GB is released, the price for for 1gb+ chip would be low enough to be used for games.

But yah, that three pillar thing is bollocks.

  • Hmmm... I thought the article was only talking about remakes for the DS (it shows a screen from the Impossible Mission one)

  • This gives me great hope. What could be next?

    Dreamcast?

    Saturn?

    Dare I say... Neo Geo?

    Arcade roms?

I'm salivating just dreaming of the possibilities. Yes, I am seriously totally willing to fork over cash for these things, even if "They can be gotten for free wink wink nudge nudge say no more" Only Nintendo, ladies and gentlemen.

If they play this virtual console thing right, it'd be a one-shop-stop gamesplosion of Nerdish Delights. An instant party for game afficionados in one sleek sexy, PORTABLE little case.

  • I would love to try some Sega Saturn on the VC. We never had the pleasure of meeting. Also, Dreamcast. Yes, that would be beautiful.

  • oh sorry, but 1 point is = 1 cent.

  • Yeah, pony up some Guardian Heroes and Nights on the Wii VC!

Also throw votes into the ring for c64 titles The Last Ninja (1 and 2) and Defender of the Crown, though you probably ought to cough up an Amiga version of that one Big N.

  • Epyx games were great. Jumpman was a favorite....but I played them on my Atari 800xl instead.

  • I have to agree with Karlott and PTTSeven. I'd really like some Neo-Geo and Saturn games on my Wii. That goes double if they're made multiplayer online. Guardian Heroes and Metal Slug online? Sign me up!

Oh, and about the C64 games on there.. Well, I just have to say I'm not exactly excited.

  • I'm hoping Electronic Arts will put their back library of C64 games on the Wii. An on-line capable Mail Order Monsters would be amazing. Some of you whipper snappers don't even KNOW.

  • I was into the Vic-20 and the Amiga, but I skipped right past the C64. I remember Spy vs Spy, but it was later released for the NES, so we would probably see that version. I would be much more interested in seeing Game Boy games released, but it is probably just a matter of time. I worry about the price point because the NES and SNES prices seem too high. (Remember also, they said that games would START at $5, $8, and $10... That does not mean that is the upper limit.) I am a gamer that plays about a 50/50 mix of retro games and new games, and I would say that it is definitely a concern to me that they are charging too much for these retro games. I have no doubt that the "hardcore" gamer might regularly spend $5 on an NES game, but I find it hard to believe that this is going to happen that often with the non-core gamers that Nintendo is trying to get to try the system. These prices are higher than a price would be for an impulse buy.

  • Loved my C64. Great sound chip. I'd like some Amiga emulation action on the Wii, but considering what a pain in the ass it is to get WINUAE working on xp alone, I don't think it will happen on a console any time soon.

  • Actually I think Nintendo said that they were in talks about bringing Amiga games to the VC.

The five dollars is to pay for the royalty fees. We also don't know what will come with the vc purchase. Does game upgrades, multiple versions, manuals we can instantly access from the console maybe print them, box art, lots of bonus materials would make that five dollars a huge bargin wouldn't it?

Also it is rumored that game achievements in Wii games will also give us points for vc games so you could conceivebaly get a N64 game for free or several NES games by doing every achievement in a Wii game. Add in points for brand new Wii games and it's a bargin.

  • I would kill if they brought Neo Geo (arcade or home system) titles to VC.

If people are impulse buying $5 iPod games, I think $5 NES titles (no idea what the cost for other systems like MSX will be) will be fine.

  • M.U.L.E. might be really, really hard to do until the title falls into the public domain. Eagle Games was looking briefly at one point into doing a boardgame version, and it was probably not possible.

Dani Bunten died in 1998 of lung cancer, and early on in the computer games industry, contracts tended to revert to their owners.

A small, friendly approachable publisher that played well with others might be able to sort everything out. As it turns out, of course, E.A. would much rather churn out 24 sports titles and spend tens of millions developing another crappy James Bond title than actually doing something interesting.

    Feh.

  • GHETTOBLASTER NEEDS TO BE ALL UP IN DAT WII.

    Also, Little Computer People.

  • Raid on Bungling Bay
    Raid Over Moscow
    Beachhead
    Archon

Anyone who says old games blow are on crack. Nowadays it's all flash no sbustance. In the days of yore gameplay had to rule becuase the graphics sucked.

  • I'd love to see Saturn games, but the emulation would probably be a nightmare. I don't think there's a decent (or even working) emu out there now. That's why I'm hanging on to my chipped Saturn so I can continue playing PDS, SF3, DF, etc.

Oh, and MULE is the best multiplayer game ever made. Owns WoW.

    seriously.

  • The Only people who will complain about the price of a download are people who are interested in purchasing it.
I don't really care how expensive a Ferrari is because I dont think it's worth it.
But I do care how much that next Castlevania download is gonna cost on the 360.
Standard prices for downloads are a double edged weapon, they are good for popular games but discourage people from trying under-rated games.

To Intellectualdiot and striderhayasa, if you are interested in what the Next Gameboy system might be, you can check it out at:

    http://madiart.blogspot.com/

Hopefully Kotaku might post about it later on.

  • C64 is before my time (NES was my first console), but nice to hear anyway. I'd lke to see Sega extend their deal so it at least also includes Master System and/or Game Gear games.

As for the Saturn, that would be fantastic but as others says, it's not a easy system to emulate. Mega CD and 32X are also said to be tricky, although they manage to get them to run in Gens (even the actual mega CD discs can be booted into it with the right bios)

  • *Crosses fingers and hopes for a sign of Commodore Amiga on the virtual console as well*

    Please! :D

  • If they charge for the C64 games, that is pretty hilarious, since I have over 500 of them for free, legal ROMS on the PC.

  • @AIMadi

Awesome link. I like the idea of the modules, but with the success of the DS, I see Nintendo trying to continue the touch/dual screen setup. But the screens with the module concept is very interesting. Slick Design too. Great Work

Saturn on VC would be hot. I need Radiant Silvergun, Astal, Dragon Force and (if some license work around can be found) Xmen vs Street Fighter.
There are a wealth of Master System games I would love to get into.

    Kenseiden
    The Ninja
    Zillion
    Zillion 2
    Alex Kidd

If Nintendo has Hudson/TG-16 support can we also get CoreGrafx and SuperGrafx support too?
SuperGrafx had THE best version of Ghouls and Ghost in its time even though the console only had 6 games released for it. I'd love to have the Valis series from TG-CD, or Lords/Gates of Thunder, Spriggan and a few others.

  • Without the SID you really can't accurately emulate a C64. At least not audio-wise. Either way, it will be crazy if we see Gianna Sisters, a mario knock-off, officially playabale on a Nintendo platform. Also, hope we get Ghostbusters.

  • Here's to hoping we're one step closet to unlocking classic Atari games as well like Star Raiders I and II, Ballblazer, Rescue on Fractalus to name a few...Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned the awesome Apshai RPG series (there are several). Each day makes me want one more! Old games really do rock!

  • Ah - but will they have Choplifter?

Someone mentioned Neo Geo - they would be better off getting the Samurai Shodown set and some of the other gems, like Metal Slug. People might actually pay for those.

  • Ohh man, I sure hope they put Stoker on the Wii! C64 gaming at it's worse! And also most scarring when you're 8 and put a random disk you and your buddy found at his neighbours into the commodore.

  • C64 had some classics. I'm looking more forward to these games than I am classic NES, SNES, or Genesis games since I still have those consoles and they still work.

I sold my C64 long ago, and with it went a lot of great games: Impossible Mission, Karateka, Miner 2049'er, Temple of Apshai, Spy vs. Spy, etc. The Epix Summer/Winter games would be great if they remade them to make use of the Wii controller.

Best of all this means no more typing LOAD "*", 8,1 and waiting 5 minutes for the oft prone to failure 5 1/4" drive to load up the game.

  • Gagaman:

The C64 computer had nearly the same timeframe as the NES (came out two years later, and actually lasted MUCH longer - into the mid- to late-nineties). It wasn't a console, either, it was a computer.

Also, the very much maligned C64 console system came out AFTER the NES, so by no means was the C64 in any iteration "before your time".

  • My dad wants Space Taxi. He's too lazy to dig the C64 out of the basement to play it.

  • Jumpman, awesome!

There is so much variety and greatness in that thing. Still one of the best Commodore games!

Hey, will we be able to play the C64 emulator without a game? It'll have to include the BASIC and Kernal ROMs to offer perfect emulation, right? That would be really quite wonderful if we could actually write C64 games on the system....
