WHO WANTS NUMBERS? Gaf poster JoshuaJSlone has done us all a favour and jumped headfirst into the Wii's lifetime Japanese sales data, coming up with all kinds of neat figures, charts and comparisons. Neatest: the Wii has already overtaken the Gamecube's lifetime sales. Poor Gamecube. Slightly less neat: he's charted the Wii's sales against the other major consoles, showing that only the GBA and DS, with its mysterious money-printing ways, can hope to stand against the might of affordability, waggle and Wii Sports.

o.O
Holy sh...
I'm not really suprised by this. The Wii is a monster so far. Will it ever top PS2 numbers though? That's what I'm wondering. I don't think it will.
Oh no, Luke mentioned "waggle" ... cue the fanatics that defended him for putting his troll bait in the Sony and 360 posts!
@ssjmichael:
I seriously doubt that the PS2 could be surpassed, but you never know... I think that the killer combo with Wii Fit will make it nearly unstoppable in the casual gaming market.
@ssjmichael: So long as the Wii's sales don't suddenly drop off the face of the earth, it should take less time than the PS2 did to get to its numbers.
@Reilaos, Man of Destiny:
HOw can it fall off the face of the earth. I thought the world was round. WELl this is a step closer to Nintedomination NATION! omg.... you can have it nintendo as long as i have some *couhg cash cough*
@ssjmichael: It all depends on the continuing sales and the suspected lifetime of the Wii compared to the PS2's.
I have lost count of all the records the Wii has broken in less than two years.
This is fascinating to me. I'll never understand why this thing is so popular. Motion controlled games are only interesting to me for like 15minutes. Mind you I will be buying a Wii someday for Galaxy when it drops in price. I'm not paying $250 for what is essentially a Gamecube with a new control interface. But I digress. Though, that's probably what people want these days is something quick that doesn't take much effort to get in to. Hence those EA Madden commercials for Wii with the old woman.
Thats sad..considering the Wii is a gamecube >.>
ah hell.
@Mukatsuku: Except the Wii has games that can't be played on the GameCube.
does anyone think that this person should learn how to work an x-axis on a graph? besides that pretty spectacular.
@ssjmichael: It will. It has the consumers attention with an iron grip and wont let go for anything and so long as it does, it will pass the PS2.
@Mukatsuku:
Ah, but you see, since it is two Gamecube's stuck together... then it's already doubled the lifetime sales of the Gamecube! And since I have two Wiis and a Gamcube that means I have.. -counts- 5 Gamecubes! Huzzah!
@Sollus:
15 minutes of interest for motion controlled games is about right, but first person control with the infrared pointer is incredibly fun and intuitive - the reason I bought the Wii to begin with. Too bad only two games have gotten it right so far...
so does anyone think that this guy should learn to work an x-axis on a graph or is that just me? besides that the wii seems to be selling better than any hotcake ever made.
@ssjmichael:
It's possible. But, hey, anything's possible.
While we know PS2 shipped 120 million worldwide, anyonw know what it's Japanese-only sales were?
@Sollus: Wow, you must be very easily satisfied is some like motion control alone can entertain you for an entire 15 minutes. That's not the only thing the console does you troll.
Man, I knew the GameCube did poorly, but *that* poorly? Too bad 'cause it had some great games
In any case, it's the rise, or really the return, of the casual gamer to console gaming! I know so many people who are buying a Wii that haven't bought much less played a console since the NES. Granted, it's mostly for Wii Sports, but usually they'll pick up one or two more games. Then I bet a significant minority of those casual gamers will then go on to become a "hardcore" gamer and buy a 360 or PS3.
Not saying much since one machine is a complete piece of arse.
It's a tough guess if the Wii will surpass PS2 numbers, or if the Wii will die off in the next 2 or 3 years. This would still leave the Wii with a number two market share. The only thing that will push the We past PS2 numbers is if the price is slashed repeatedly. In two or three years we will see Wii's selling for $99.
Mark my words.
Also notice how the wii doesnt even start at 0 LOL, they probably sold half a mil before it even came out.
@Green-clad gamer dude A.K.A. the dark horse for the Kotaku ...:
Umm, he was just stating his opinion, ... he wasn't trolling.
/shrug
@Nathan24:
you're right it did have some great games. Gamecube did finish 3rd last gen, but not by much.
ps2 120 millionish
xbox 25 millionish
gamcube 21 millionish
@shindokie: "HOw can it fall off the face of the earth. I thought the world was round."
You obviously haven't played SMG yet...
Not hard to see it coming if you follow sales figures, but still mind blowing. Just a year ago at launch a lot of people were predicting Wii would actually have lower lifetime sales than the Gamecube... Even the most hardcore fans didn't seriously expect anything like this. No matter what happens from now on, it'll be near impossible to call Wii a failure. Of course it still has a ways to go to surpass worldwide GC sales, but it's pretty much inevitable at this point. Congratulations, Nintendo.
@EnigmaNemesis: Oh, of course he wasn't. I mean compared to you, pfff, dude's an amateur. I would assume someone of your caliber and experience would overlook such a troll attempt as a mere "opinion."
Trying to group all Wii owners under one tag is foolish. "Slightly less neat," what's that about? Ultimately it should be at least a little bit good for all games if more people get into any kind of them in general.
We all buy what we want and can. Wasting time on "causal" v. I don't even know what is pointless, with how many different genres are out there for people to enjoy. There's no need to lump Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports, Metroid Prime or any other game into more categories, or at least don't expect profound results if you have to do it anyway.
There are a lot of people that only play specific kinds of games, like maybe sports games. If you're trying to overanalyze people's entertainment and put everyone all into two groups, you're probably not going to have anything interesting to add.
I have a Wii and a 360, haven't played the Wii as much lately but as long as everyone makes good games and you buy what you enjoy, it's pointless to have some kind of prejudice.
Do some of you post on other boards how much better Coke is than Pepsi, or take the time to say, "Pepsi is RC in a different can." Do you go to clothing boards and say "How could those casual imbeciles waste their time with different pants from what I have?" Fun is fun, and arguing about games takes time spent not playing fun games. I understand arguing about games or picking on different games is fun for some of you... whatever floats your boat!
I don't know if this is a sign of how well the Wii's going, or how poorly the Gamecube did. Maybe it's a bit of both. Whatever it is, Nintendo have really turned it around this generation.
@hewenttojareds:
Even though you say that to ask people not to rip on video games I'm sure there are fashion forums designed just to make the wearers of abercrombie feel better about themselves.
Numbers are annoying. :<
It's like, all I hear about anymore.
Hmm, well I guess this is good. As others have said, the GCN was seriously lagging behind the other systems of the generation in terms of sales. Now the Wii seems to be making up for it. Of course, it also helps that the Wii is fully backwards compatible with all GCN games.
If you take into account how many ps2 were rebuys of broken ps2 and upgrade to slims. The wii will proberly sell to more people.
I love how some disgruntled gamers continue to remain awed at why the system is selling so well, blaming its popularity on only soccer moms, lack of supply, or other random "flukes" they can try and figure out.
To me, it's simple. The thing doesn't cost a ton of money, it has fun games (despite what people will try and say), and the controller works in an easy, simple, and reliable way. Soccer moms love it, sure, but so do college kids, gaming enthusiasts, little kids, and old people alike. I'm 25 and count Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil/Silent Hill games to be among my biggest influences, and I greatly enjoy the Wii. Heck, my family is still playing Wii bowling a year since we got it.
Of course, for those who see it as a threat to their system of choice or "hardcore gaming", they'll say what they think they need to. I'm not really that worried. There will always be a market for the hardcore gamers of each console. I'm actually hopeful that with such a big userbase the Wii will start to get a few more hardcore games released. Heck, it's only been a year, and already there are plenty of games worth playing. And the best one (Smash) hasn't even come out yet.
@Green-clad gamer dude A.K.A. the dark horse for the Kotaku ...:
No need to get personal... it is only plastic and silicon!
@DELETED: First day is probably less than a pixel at that scale.
Clearly the winner in Japan will be whichever one the h-game makers figure out how to make homebrew for first. If you see the aisles at Comiket lined with homebrew Wii pron games, you know it will be an unstoppable juggernaut. And it has the advantage that it's easier to use with one hand!
I recall someone from Nintendo saying that if the Wii sells better than the Gamecube, it's a success. So here we have it, hard numbers that say that in Nintendo's eyes thier new console has already won.
@Sollus: You really believe that Wii owners desire only "quick" games "that doesn't take much effort to get in to"? I guess you missed the news about Wii owners buying over 600,000 copies of Super Mario Galaxy during its first week of release. Metroid Prime 3 has sold over half a million copies and Zelda: Twilight Princess is over one million sold. Wii owners want only short games? Sure buddy...
I think this means the Wii is finally a success. It was touch-and-go for a while there.
Wii fit is the beginning of the tidal wave that will wash the PS2 records away
I'm starting to turn against Nintendo. I own a Wii, and I love my Nintendo gold, but as a PAL gamer (the not-really-casual-type) I've been bitten in the ass too many times now to be really enthusiastic about their succes. (Fire Emblem, where, ack, aaaaaah!)
So screw you Nintendo, I hope you fail!
You can buy back my support by giving FE a release date. I truly am that cheap.
I think the reason that Nintendo is doing so well is the innovation and the fun factor they brought back to gaming, they got the balance right as I have matured as a gamer I am finding I want the old style adrenaline games like the DS has, I think thats why they do so well with the DS and with the Wii they are balancing party style games with more in depth ones
plus the price is a major factor, who can afford to spend £399 on a console £179 is better for the price add to the fact that Nintendo has a Rabid fan base and some of the best franchises going they are doing well, they are trying to shake of the kiddy console tag and going for an all encompassing system to bring in all types of gamers.
they are in fact beating sony at their own game with what they are doing.
The number of people actually still using their Wiis would be closer to the level of the blue line methinks. Hyuk hyuk.
@jufonuk: I agree with everything you said, except the last line. This was and is Nintendo's game. Sony was beating them for a while, but they're going to have to work twice as hard to do it again.
A sign of a good father, is having it's son do better in life then the father could ever do.
Nintendo Wii, you're making your making your forefather's proud.
@Anthropomancer: Up to now I've had more fun on my 360, but if Nintendo are going to make games as good as Mario Galaxy then they can take as long as they want making them.
Until the Wii gets Ikaruga also the GC will always remain superior in my heart.
@Witzbold: um you know you can play the GC version on your Wii right?
@friscom99: Its the original or nothing baby, you just dont understand a gamers heart.
@floppylobster:
what I meant to say was for the x amount of years the big N was top of the heap until the PSone and PS2 came along, then they waned but they are back to king of the hill as far as I am concerned the only company that could have matched them bit the dust as far as console making was concerned R.I.P. the Dreamcast
who would have thought all those years ago sonic would ever appear on a Nintendo system!!
