NiGHTS Sequel Confirmed

No more rumors. No more speculation. Swedish videogame mag GameReactor has released a teaser image of their upcoming April issue—they're quite serious, mind you—featuring their "exklusivt!" reveal of Sega's sequel to the Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams. Funny that they don't actually mention the hardware platform, isn't it? Still, the fact that the Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK is running their NiGHTS issue soon leads us to conclude it's coming to the Wii. For now.

Thanks for the heads up, Alexander!

  • Modern day Sega + original Nights creator not involved = Failure

  • Fuck yeah! \m/

  • Damn it. So it's not Woody Woodpecker then?

  • My main concern is not if this game is going to be good or not, but rather, where can I play the original? I'm one of the few it seems that never had an opportunity to play the original game and I'd like to play it through before worrying about a sequel.

  • the original came out on dreamcast?
can somebody link to some footage or information because i've got no idea what the game is about..

  • Just youtube "nights into dreams" to see what this game is.

I'm very excited. But I wouldn't exactly call this a confirmation...even if they are "very serious," why pass up an oppurtunity to join a huge prank and sell tons of issues?

  • Maybe this is the mystery that the Sega developer was kidnapped and tortured over.

  • Oh how I wish that was Ryo Hazuki on the cover.

  • The original was not on the Dreamcast, but on the Sega Saturn. One of the main reasons to own a Saturn. It came packed with a special controller.

  • April fools maybe?? It could be a very elaborate prank...

  • Boner get!

The fact that there's a giant render of the NiGHTS character on the front really squashes the April Fool's rumor. And I really don't see why they wouldn't. And since when do Swedes and Nintendo magazines form alliances? NEVER. They're moral enemies.

  • Sega had BETTER not screw this game up. I still love the original Saturn game and play it quite a lot (and I bought it on release). Despite being really really worried about the game, I can't help but be really excited at the same time...PLEASE be good!!!

  • Count me among those who are completely confused about why this is a classic. Even for it's day, it seemed like the controls were kind of random.

An updated version will probably be better on the Wii, though, since now we can render 3D environments much better, and it would probably cut out a lot of frustration.

They'd be smart to cut the ground-pounding kid sections, though. I don't know anyone who actually played this game for anything but the flying parts.

    @Kyle81:
"Modern day Sega + original Nights creator not involved = Failure" Truer words doth been spoken.

  • I'm excited. The original title has eluded me for quite sometime. Back when the first one came out on the Saturn I just couldn't justify buying a Saturn to play one game... since then well, other things have kept me from getting it. I hope I haven't built this up to much in mymind... its possible that I already have, and will now be let down.

  • Please Sega for Ol'Sonic sake dont screw this one.The actual Sega team sucks,is not the same without Segata Sanshiro.

    @Xsyven: I think this one is real,remember the weird Sega announcement?.http://kotaku.com/gaming/clip/clip-sega-developer-kidnapped-bunny-ear-cut-off-247317.php .

I would say Nights has Landed.

  • @KeyonSumner: i was thinking the same thing. woody r.i.p.

  • If the teams responsible for any Sonic game since the original Sonic Adventure get near this, I will find something important to Sega and burn it to the ground. So help me. I'm one of the few that actually played the original NiGHTS, with analog controller, on the Saturn. Sega, you've shit all over my pre-adolescence; please don't move into my adolescence as well.

  • I should probably get around to playing the original to appreciate this game

  • I have mixed feeling. On the one hand, it's a new NiGHTS game, on the other it's being made by modern-day SEGA.

Hopefully this is the signal of a turnaround for the company in terms of quality and actual franchises.

  • Come on 360 version...sorry Wii a game like this deserves a system that can make the visuals really shine. :)

  • When do we get to see the main character firing a gun and driving a car? Those changes made the new Sonic games so much better.

    /Sarcasm 'Off'
    //couldn't resist, sorry

  • A NiGHTS sequel, eh? I really like the original, and I still pop it (and Christmas NiGHTS!) in my Saturn froim time to time. It warms my heart to see a sequel after so long, but saddens me that it could be a Wii exclusive. I'm not sold on the console just yet.

It's never been clear what part Naka Yuji truly played in the creation of NiGHTS due to Naka's constant boasting about EVERYTHING, but it is clear that the creative director and NiGHTS designer was Oshima Naota. I could care less if Naka is involved, but it'd be nice if Oshima participates in the project.

  • This was news last week.

  • Due to the placement of the 'r' in that image, I thought he/she/it was flipping me off.

  • Gametrailers.com/ScrewAttack.com have a piece on NiGHTS for those of you who want to see some.

  • @Omikaru: "Hopefully this is the signal of a turnaround for the company in terms of quality and actual franchises".

Probably not,Sega released a bounch of games during March and February and all of them sucked. They screwed Full auto (Even more),After Burner and Virtua Fighter wasnt quite as good as VF4 Evo.

Modern sega sucks, the best you can expect from them is something decent that you will enjoy with really low expectations.

  • Cool can't wait! Now all I need is Shenmue 3, a new Jet Set Radio and a new Panzer Dragoon Saga and I'm in fanboy heaven!

  • *cries*

  • Dear Sega:

    ABOUT @$%#ING TIME!!!

    Love, Jason xxooxox

  • @Dynamic_Entry: "Oh how I wish that was Ryo Hazuki on the cover."

    You and me both, man.

  • @Shinamano: That would be cool yet Nights is perfect (In theory )for the wii thanks to the wiimote. But im conserned,if the devs get the wiimote is going to kick ass if not is going to be dirt on nights name.

  • Seeing that Super Mario Galaxy is going to be a flying game and so is Nights. Is this what we have to look forward to on the Wii? Mario sets the standard for a Nintendo system.Super mario was 2D sidescroller and most NES games folloed the same pattern.N64's Mario was 3d platformer and most games on N64 were the same. Now Galaxy in a flying/platformer game and now we have Nights. So will Wii games be all about flying from now on?

  • I'm more interested in the "SMASKIG ACTION". Sounds hot.

  • @Kesubei:

Wii is the top selling console in Japan, so it makes sense that they would put it on that system

  • Ooooooh man... I wish it was a new Kid Icarus instead :(

  • Sega game that isn't sonic+ sega game that is NiGHTS+ flying+motion controls= win.

  • I'm not getting my hopes up. Sega is going to ruin it.

  • I am trying so very hard to remain optimistic about this title. It's so exciting to think that Wii owners may get one of the titles I was clamoring for since the console was announced.

  • @Torgo: Dude thats not funny, what sega did there was evil.WTF they were thinking is like taking pacman and turn it into a GTA character with granades and hookers just to make it cool but it ends just being sad.

Is like AVGN or Little Kuriboh imposters, please have mercy and kill them.

  • I don't know... I don't trust anyone during April >_>

  • I never played Nights, so forgive me if I sound shallow, but look at that main character? How could someone who looks like that possibly be in a good game? Purple tights? A fluffy shirt? I'll pass. Give me a Manny Calavera 3-piece suit any day.

  • A new Panzer Dragoon game on the Wii with your remote doubling for the dragon would pretty much be the reason that videogames were made.

    Just sayin'.

  • Just keep in mind that a 3D rendering doesn't tell us all to much, or else Mushroom Kingdom Hearts is equally a possibility.

  • @Dynamic_Entry: Fuckin' ay. If I die before Shenmue is finished, I will consider my life incomplete.

  • Heads up, the image just got pulled and replaced by something so obvious.

  • @PhotoBoy:

    You and me both

  • Why do I get the feeling most people who are wetting their pants in joy have only heard about the original title via second-hand info? The original was kind of neat for the time and was a nice way to show off the Saturn's new "analog stick included" pad, but the game was more about presentation than gameplay. For that reason, I'd much rather see it on a console that can push outstanding visuals. I've already experienced what will likely be the "motion control" for this game - it's called the paper airplane minigame in WarioWare.

  • I don't want to create polemic or anything but I have 2 questions:

    - How many of you actualy PLAYED nights? I see too many people hyping it without ever having played any saturn game (Nights included.)

    - What exactly in the game make of it a great candidate for a "next-gen" game?

Nights had awesome graphics and production values back then, that deformable soft scene was awesome. But this values don't translate in a new version of the game .. done YEARS later with a totaly (or mostly) new team. Even the old team today could be outdated or something.

So we get the gameplay style.. (Which ironicaly mario galaxy took some of .. considering Nights was the Mario 64 Killer! LOL) and the character/background design ..

We love it that much? dunno ..

Let's see how they will bring this thing to life.

  • @Hater3000

While I think the Wiimote has it's place (And I do own one) I do not think it would help Nights...it would rather hurt it...making the loops too easy.

This is just my opinion...plus I would rather see a HD wonderland bursting at the seams with detail...

  • @Shinamano: "Come on 360 version...sorry Wii a game like this deserves a system that can make the visuals really shine. :)"

    har har!
But I'd rather have a new NiGHTS on the PS3 than 360. At least the PS3 has shoddy motion controls.

Seriously, though, I don't know why, if anyone REALLY wants this games to come back, they'd want it ANYWHERE but on a Nintendo system. The PS3 and 360 core audiences aren't going to by a game like NiGHTS.
    It's too 'gay' for "H4RDC0R3 G4M3RZ! :p

  • YES! Another Sega game I'm never going to play!

  • What goes in the hands? A Wiimote perhaps? Maybe that's why there's no mention of a specific system.

  • And now.... BAM! Xbox 360 only! Me hopes :)

  • Instant arousal.

My initial reaction having come to pass, I fear for the ultimate fate of this game with Sega's recent shortcomings and the absence of the original NiGHTS creator.

  • @KaneRobot:
    @Ludwig:

These guys have it right. NiGHTS was neat in the day mostly becuase of its trippy visuals and charm. The gameplay was pretty so-so, and really doesn't stand up too well today IMO.

So I'd rather see a high end graphical version as well, since that was really its strong suit the way I see it.

And if everyone is salivating so much for motion controlled NiGHTS, why didn't anybody pick up SegaSuperStars for PS2's EyeToy?

I swear I think more people want to talk about games than play them.

  • Wow, Sega actually hypes garbage no one remembers...

  • I guess I am looking forward to this.

  • I have about as much confidence as this being good, as in the next 3D Sonic game being good.

That is to say ... not a whole lot.

  • No matter how good or bad this game might be, fans of the original are going to stand by the first game always. That being said, let Sega try. Driving a franchise into the ground? Yeah, like NiGHTS did anything for Sega....

I haven't played the original, so I'll be looking forward to it.

  • hey, can I join the " I wish this was Shem Mue 3" fanclub. A possible Nights for Wii makes me think "meh".

I actually still have a working Saturn and the original Nights. It was good for its time but it didn't age well. As many of you have already mentioned, Sega of today is trash. How else do you explain Sega releasing a more than capable console in Dreamcast with no Shinobi, no Panzer Dragoon, No Hang-On, no Nights, no Streets of Rage, no space harrier, no thunderblade. It's like Nintendo releasing the Wii and never making a Smash Brothers for it or no Zelda or Mario. it's ridiculous. The strongest weapons Sega had in the fight against Sony and what do they do...shelve them. Absolutely brillant.

With that being said I have no faith that Sega can make this game good. None. I don't even think Yuji Naka is even viable anymore. When was the last time he or Sonic Team made a good Sonic game that's not on DS...or a good game in general? It's supposed to be on the Wii too? Bad Idea. Even if Sega managed to make the gameplay good, graphically this game really needs to shine, so unless Sega knows how to really push the Wii, Nights would be better suited to 360 or PS3.

I can't be excited about this. Give me a Shen Mue 3 with AM2 developing and Yu Suzuki at the helm and I'd eat it up.

  • twi'lek chicks are hot

  • I'm really confused as to why everyone seemed to think the original NiGHTS was about looks...from what I remember everyone was going on about the addictive score-attack gameplay, the A-life system and the fluidity of the controls before they even started about the graphics. Those are the traits I hold dear about the game, and are the parts that will make the sequel good if they're enhanced properly.

Having said that, I'm not being overly optimistic about the game - I find it hard to trust Sega nowadays.

  • Prepare April Fool's Force Field Shielding!

    Ready, Captain!

    ... ... ... *point* Engage.

This (and most other news stories) will not be true for me until April 2nd :)

  • No-one has mentioned what, to me, was the greatest thing about Nights - the music. Even though I gave away my Saturn and my copy of Nights (hand me down to a younger cousin), I've scoured the 'tubes looking for MP3s of the music - all to no avail. I'd be super curious to find out who is doing the music and whether it will feature as prominently in this new version.

As for the graphics - if this *is* for the Wii, the vids of Super Mario Galaxy seem to suggest that the Wii can do some pretty cool stuff, even if it isn't HD. I'm tentatively excited - this could be awesome, or it could be ass...
