Today is a very, very dark day. Earlier, we dropped by Costco to pick up a real, orange pumpkin (not the green Japanese pumpkins), and Costco was COMPLETELY SOLD OUT. That means, no pumpkin for me. And that means no pumpkin pie, no jack-o'-lantern and no pumpkin seeds. Nothing! Instead, my Halloween will consist of a pumpkin the size of an apple covered with cheesy stickers. Talk about horrible.

You reminded me of the turkey part on The Christmas Story(movie). "IT WAS GONE... ALLL GONE!!!!"
cheer up Brian! [www.google.com]
thats a google for mail order pies by the way
Are you telling me the ONLY place for you to buy a pumpkin in your area is Costco? I doubt that. Heck even some gas stations by me sell pumpkins. Not to mention every grociery and hardware store.
what about those square shaped watermelons ;)
Dude, come on... check the flower shops. That's where to pick one up in Kyoto. If you're desperate swing by "Kitayama Halloween" in Kyoto this weekend.
The hell? Who goes to a grocery store for a pumpkin? Even here in NJ the supposed armpit of America we go to farms with pumpkin patches and pick our pumpkins.
Poor Bashcraft...
@el gooser: lol nice comparison XD
BTW, where is Costco in your area? thought they were only in Tokyo. The green japanese pumpkins are VERY tasty I recommend you make nimono out of it.
i tried googling mail order pumpkins, didnt work
O noez. D:
@el gooser: Hahah yeah I thought the same exact thing.
"The heavenly aroma still hung in the house. But it was gone, all gone! No pumkin! No pumpkin sandwiches! No pumpkin salad! No pumpkin gravy! Pumpkin Hash! Pumpkin a la King! Or gallons of pumpkin soup! Gone, ALL GONE!"
green pumpkins still have seeds, don't they?
Pff, that happened to me and my brother once, all we did was blow up a round balloon, stick on paper mache (a few dozen layers @_@), paint orange and then cut a funny face.
It looked sooo much better than the crappy ones we carved before.
@peet: I go to a grocery store for pumpkins. :) So add two names to your list.
I feel your pain, I went out looking for a pumpkin today as well. Although not to costco as a cute girl in a bar told me that they sell them in flower shops, specifically one in shinjuku.
Needless to say, every flower shop I went to was without orange pumpkins(ie. jack-o-lanterns as they seem to call them here, say pumpkin or even american pumpkin in japanese and they just give you a blank look) So it seems ill be without a pumpkin this year too, sad really. Guess Ill carve a cantalope or something.(granted I was just gonna take it to the bar since they have no clue about halloween.)
Green pumpkins!? This is madness!
do they not sell canned pumpkin? You could reverse engineer the pulp into a lively vegetable.... or at least cook it and make that pie and such.
@cro_: Madness?
THIS.
IS.
SPA- ...oh, wait. Nevermind. I'm pretty sure the Sparatans didn't have Halloween.
I just carved me three today. They're 98p in Tesco folks!
@Bashcraft: You should've learned from your wife and pre-ordered it. Just as she did with your son's pillow. ;-)
Okay sorry for rubbing it in. But hey, maybe the other commenters' suggestion to check flower shops will work out for you. Goodluck! =)
Man, no pumpkin? Curse the recent pumpkin shortage!
You blew it. You should have fetched one earlier. The Japanese are mystified by orange pumpkins; they buy them up.
You should have pre-ordered the square pumpkin anyway. Ah well, I'm sure you can pick up a fake one anyway and a slice of japanese pumpkin pie on the way home.
Yeah in japan trying to buy stuff at last minute usually always results in a big sold out sign. D:
Just because there are thousands of others thinking the same thing.
Happened to me on one too many occasions Id like to remember.
You should camp out there until they get some more.
Make it fun, pretend you're waiting for the release of SSBB.
I guess there are more gaijins in Japan than you thought... Better get them early next year then.
There must be other stores?
I'd go cross country to get one if I were you.
@peet: People don't grow pumpkins everywhere my friend. Back when I was little I lived on the east coast and could go pick my pumpkin from a pumpkin patch. It was fun. But when you live somewhere like a desert or I guess Japan they don't grow them all over the place.
I wonder if I could find a pumpkin here in Australia. For some reason I think it would be difficult. (what with the limited recognition of Halloween) You can't go anywhere in the US at this time without seeing the things and I have yet to see a pumpkin. (que triste)
We have four, come on by I'll give you one.
@Sailorcancer:
Screw that, I'll just dedicate one to you. I'll call it the Ashcraft pumpkin.
@Sailorcancer:
Appreciated. Just don't smash it. :/
If there's a Jupiter around you, just drop in for some Pumpkin puree. That's how I brought pumpkin pie to my little village here on Shikoku.
@ashcraft:
I would never dream of it. The pumpkin will die a natural death. And to make sure it does I'll stand outside on Halloween night with a shot gun. Anyone wanting to harm the pumpkin wil have to go through me >:\
If only Fussa-shi were closer to you. I'm pretty sure the base commissary still has some in stock. They did last time I went grocery shopping. :(
You've still got four days, man. You can find a pumpkin somehow.
I dunno, I think you could carve other fruits. Heck you could carve the green pumpkins, or a melon. And in any case the Japanese green pumpkins are good, you can make all sorts of tasty stuff with it. It's a pretty versatile fruit.
