Newcomers to Japan always remark that homeless people here never panhandle. They just don't do it. Rather, they do do things like collect cardboard boxes, build blue tarp houses and keep to themselves. Today, when I was visiting my accountant's office in Umeda, there was an old man begging for money near Osaka Station. I was taken aback. That was the first time I've ever seen someone in Japan doing that. I actually wanted to say something to him, but held my tongue. Hope this isn't the beginning of a trend...
