If you couldn't tell, Halo Fever is in full force right now. The game may not be perfect (sorry Eurogamer) but it certainly has its selling points and I think Microsoft's boast that they want to dethrone Spider-Man 3's mammoth opening weekend with a mammoth Halo 3 launch day aren't that outlandish.
We've sent our very own Fahey over to New York City to check in on the Halo-mania going on later on tonight. Remember at the stroke of midnight you can pick up a copy of the last in the Halo trilogy... unless you picked it up at one of the many places that seemed to have sold the game early. Once you play through the entire game I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
In the meantime sit back and check out these pictures from New Zealand, the first place in the world where Halo 3 launched. Nicole Sinclair and Ryan Marsden, both 19, were the first two in the world to pick the game up from a retailer.... who didn't break embargo.
New Zealand Microsoft also celebrated the launch by freezing 50 prize discs in a one ton block of ice. Gamers have until 6 a.m. to melt the ice with water guns and get the prizes.

So Project O screenies are attached to the article. I think you put the wrong pics Crecente.
yeh project O screens fit in well :)
Beating spiderman 3 isn't that outlandish. it will sell at least 1 million in the us alone. that is bare minimum 60 million. Of course the super hardcore midnight day one purchaser is more likely to go for the special edition so that could go as high as 70 million. Then there is the legendary edition whihc there are at least 130 thousand of. that 16 million right there. add to that people buying a new 360, any of the accessories...you get the idea.
Lucky new zealand, what with their earliest halo 3 availability and beautiful countryside.
"In the meantime sit back and check out these pictures from New Zealand"
wow, i never knew new zealand was so animated...
I don't think sales of 360's and accessories will factor in the total first day tally of total money brought it by Halo 3. When people have been talking of Halo 3 pulling in 155 to 200 millions dollars in the first 24-hours it means just the game and the game alone. Though all three versions of the game will be pooled as one.
I wish I lived in New Zealand, the girls must be really cute, almost like anime chars...
I want to move to New Zealand.
There'll be some only sheep for the next few days while there lovers play halo :(
lonley i mean
Wow, those 2 will be famous for... oop, times up.
New Zeland looks rather scary place...
Wow, people really look different in New Zealand.
email from game UK my order has been dispached :)
@SuperMaxZero:
Really? I can't tell if that is sarcasm or not. Everyone in the picture looks like a normal human being to me.
Where are all the black people?
You know, the Aboriginals?
hardy har har to everyone. Fixed
I absolutly cannot wait until this week is over. I want to be able to go to any gaming news site and NOT see 50000 posts about how awesome Halo and Microsoft are.
This is beyond beating a dead horse, guys. Now you're just slamming things into a red stain on the ground where the horse was, 5 months ago.
@blacksamurai87: Who do you think is in the Master Chief costume.
They live in Australia...you know, corcadile dun di, corcadile hunter....
NZ is famouse for its sheep
@jasu: Im taking a holiday when its MGS4's time....
Master Chief looks like he's about to grab their heads and knock them against each other, then take the games and run away.
Anyone else think that master chief costume is a bit tacky? (Compared to the others i have seen)
they finally turned on the servers last night , it rocks .....
All together now....."Darling so there you are with that look on your face"
so no death threats brian? my friends keep badgering me about picking up a 360 ... ive been through 1 rrod .. if you add this and bioshock together is it worth it?
@jasu: couldnt agree more :D
Nice to see other people are getting their hands on it. I was one of the people who ordered through EBGames.com...like...in May, so I'm just waiting for my copy to make it up here to New England, next day shipping, y'all.
I waited in line for the Wii (on Black Friday, no less), after all. No point in doing it again for a game.
I've got a fever! And the only prescription is: more Halo!
From posting this, Its still 34 hours and 10 minutes until I can get my hands on a copy..
i love new zealand because of flight of the concords. if i'm not mistaken, they're the 3rd largest export from the NZ.
I'll be so glad when Halo 3 has finished launching and is all but forgotten by everyone...
WTF, is that a girl buying halo?! :>
*ducks*
Seriously, was she really first or did they pull her to the front of the queue so they could have a better picture? Check the entire rest of the queue...
Why are all the Sony fanboys like *mumble mumble cant wait till this is over* Chill just because a game is great it dont mean you have to hate everything about it just cos its out on the 360. Chill like those discs
@Dits:
"As if you're never hurt,
As if you're never down."
...
Damn you Crysis demo (It was pushed back you know), now I have to sit here and envy the happy people instead of laughing quietly to myself... knowing... my game would look better. :(
Curse you happy people!
that guy with the first halo3 looks like the actor from Something About Mary.. forgot his name.. argh..
Halo3 > Crescent!
The only girl in the picture is the one in the front.
the first people to get halo purchase the regualr version? c'mon, just pony up and atlest gt the LE
wuts halo??/
@flukielukie: no doubt this game will be amazing, just for the past 2 months every single gaming related site is talking about halo 3.
Im sure u will understand this once ps3 gets some big games too :P
"Once you play through the entire game I'd love to hear your thoughts on it."
You're talking about the single player campaign right?
Solo or co-op?
What about multiplayer? Forge?
Are these all part of the *entire* game?
geez them legendary helmets are pretty big...how is my cat suppose too take a picture with it on now?
"The game may not be perfect (sorry Eurogamer) but it certainly has its selling points..."
Wow, you just can't help but take shots at this game and those who enjoy it, can you? You're really making a name for yourself...as a jaded, holier-than-thou moron.
NO NO NO! Halo 3 will need to sell almost 23 million copies to beat SP3's opening weekend! Halo 3 costs more than 5 times as much as a ticket for SP3! I already did this a while ago, it aint gonna happen. Games just can't compete with movies when it comes to "attendance"
@hatramroany:
Spiderman 3 did $1.4 billion opening weekend? Holy Shit that is a lofty target!
Wow people in NZ look different...
Wait till you see the Halo live action clip just posted in Joystiq....
mumble mumble..i can't wait till this blows over. No joke though, the game is *nice*. There hasn't been this much hype around a fps since...since doom. My hats off to bungie, they made a great franchise...a franchise that i have yet to play. hahaha.
@StrangeLove: Oh I totally agree, those evil people at Kotaku bashing the best game evar!!1
@FelixLighter: I realise you're being sarcastic, but just in case hatramroany is genuinely confused, Spiderman 3 US opening weekend was apparently about $150m. At $60, this means Halo needs to sell something over 2.5 million copies in the US, not 23 million. So it has a chance.
Some much fuss over such a boring game.
@frankstallone:
Frank, stop trolling you're giving your brother a bad name!
Yeah, Us New Zealander's are luck :D
Except the papers this Morning didn't even say anything about the Halo 3 launch! :(
can you wear the helmet you get in the legendary edish?
Halo 3 is so last week man :) All the cool kids are waiting on Orange Box now!
I nabbed a copy last week and finished the campaign pretty quickly (all great except one level, and a bit short overall), but I can't wait until all my mates have got the game too so we can tackle co-op.
See you all on XBL - please be nice to each other for a change.
What you can't see was that it was absolutely pouring with rain/thunder storms that evening (with no cover leading to that building) so kudos for their dedication.
I'm picking mine up this afternoon.
