Valve's plans for the Steam Community look to be gelling quite nicely as the company has announced that the new service which will allow PC gamers to "connect with friends and other gamers, create and join groups, and organize matches" will go beta this month. The service, which was announced in June, is free and works across all Steam-powered games.
In further Steam news, indie platformer Gish has been added to the service's library. What a great platform. There really is something for everyone. Now that I'm done being pleased as punch, I'm off to cash my Valve paycheck!

And yet, CS freaks out wont show me when I add a favorite server in game. D:<
I really don't want to be the guy in charge of Games for Windows LIVE.
Was hoping this would come around soon.
The steam friends list and all that has always been quite "meh".
Hopefully we still wont have to type in IP adresses to join servers.
Is it just me or do other studios need to take notice at how Valve makes use of our current gaming community?
They tend to give back as much as they take.
You failed to mention what I think is the coolest piece of news on Steam this week:
"A note to owners of Half-Life 2 and Episode 1: If you buy the boxed retail version of The Orange Box, you can simply hand-off the games you already own to a friend. Or, you can give away the games within Steam. When you install the Orange Box, Steam will identify the duplicate games and let you send them as gifts to a friend, which will enable them to download the games from Steam for free."
Now that's unnecessarily friendly of a software company.
They could have been friendlier and not canceled the Black Box. I don't need all the extras in the Orange Box and I won't pay extra for it just so that I can "hand-off the games I already own to a friend" As long as you can buy it normally through Steam though I'll be fine with it. It's a good idea by itself, but it doesn't make up for them canceling the other package.
they only cancelled the black box retail, so if you want to stay retail you will buy orange box. I'll be getting the black box off steam :P no box, but oh well :P It's something to do with what happened with ep 1 with retailers undercutting the steam price on day 1 in my opinion, this is the way around that.
They should SERIOUSLY work on their "friends" list issue first. BUGS FIRST. THEN FEATURES. SIMPLE MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLE!
