Microsoft Japan just rang the rusty ol' Kotaku mailbox, bringing word that Edy e-money can be used to purchase Xbox LIVE memberships starting Friday, May 25th. Edy is electronic money based on FeliCa chip technology Sony developed and can be stored on cell phones and credit cards. Many Japanese stores have Edy readers at counter for customers to pay using e-money. Not only stores, but karaoke booths and movie theaters, too. It's even possible to transfer real money from Japan Post ATM's to Edy e-money accounts or put cash in your Edy account at convenience store registers. While it does look like a PS3-like Edy reader is coming yet, Japanese Xbox 360 users can sign up for LIVE via the cell phone based Mobile Edy. Microsoft Points will also be available via the e-money. A good move to entice Japanese consumers who are irrationally afraid of paying with credit cards. But now that Microsoft's using Sony developed e-money, does that mean Blu-ray's next?
