In-game tutorials are out. Comic books are the wave of the future. Forget a phonebook-sized manual, the team behind sci-fi MMO Saga of Ryzom offer players a 28-page comic book tutorial for the PC game The Ruins of Silan. The book was created with Planetwide's Comic Book Creator, which is apparently in development for Sony Online Entertainment subscribers. According to the MMO's site,
This comic fully explains one's first steps in Ryzom via screenshots from the beginners' island : from the characters creation to explanation of the windows, skills and quests... Another great reason to join the thousands of new players enjoying Ryzom's new free trial in Ruins of Silan.
I downloaded the Ruins of Silan tutorial and actually thought it seemed really helpful. It was concise, and there were photos. Not sure how useful it will be clicking back and forth from the game to comic, but I do see this kind of tutorial reaching a wider audience for things like how to use electronics and software programs.
