Clip: Japanese Metroid II Commerical

Wow, Japanese commercials are so freaking awesome! This is a spot from 1992 advertising Metroid: The Return of Samus in Japan. Interestingly, the only time you see any actual gameplay footage is towards the end in a reflection in Samus' helmet. The comic book styling and use of what looks like an animated Samus action figure makes this commercial a real standout.

  • Actually, that was kinda interesting. Although as much as I love Metroid games, I don't think Metroid II was "exciting", if that's what the guy said.

  • Awesome through-and-through. gives me ED-209 flashbacks from Robocop as well.

  • i thought Samus was a female...

that sounded too much like Japanese version of Ahhhnold...

  • lol at icepicks commment

  • Man, that commercial makes me yearn for a massive 2.5D Metroid for the Wii or sumthin..

  • I'd buy it.

  • So where can we buy that Samus Action Figure?

I like that Metroid CM where there is actually a live action hot woman playing Samus :)

  • The comic book backgrounds really remind me of Zero Mission. I honestly couldn't stand that art direction.

  • METROID ... AR-MOR-IOD

Oh man, everyone once in a while when I see a new Metroid figure on the net I feel like buying one... but they're like $100 or something! Where's my moderately well detailed yet $7 action figure that I can pick up at Wally World?

  • I guess this is why the Metroid franchise flopped in Japan? That ad was cheesy as hell.

  • Nice avatar!

I liked that commercial, one of the few early video game ads that kinda sorta stands the test of time.

  • @Demaar: Have you seen some of the cheesy rpg/anime commercials in Japan, even the ones that go on to sell over a million there?

  • For those wondering, I've translated the CM:

    Hey there, Game Boy!

Let me introduce to you a popular action game in America, Metroid 2.

Metroid has been powered up, now armed with new items and face exciting new enemies!

    Game Boy software, Metroid 2!

METROID OMOROID (which translates to "Metroid, It's Fun".)

Omoshiroi = fun. A Kansai dialect changes "omoshiroi" to "omoroi" and just added "DO" at the end to make it sound like Metroido (how the Japanese say it).

  • Oh, by the way. Nintendo used to do a lot of stop-motion back in the day, my favorites being Super Mario Land 2, Wario Land and Zelda: Link's Awakening. I grew up with those :)

  • I actually have the Japanese version of Metroid 2 inside my Gameboy Color right now. ;) I brought it to work to show off but I played Elite Beat Agents all day instead.

  • i LOVED metriod 2,
my first Metroid, and just at that most impresionable stage of childhood ...

    ahh ... memories ...

i'm glad Metriod 2 was my first Metroid game, and that nobody had tried to show me Metriod on the NES first ... i've tried to like that game ... i really have ... i own the equivalent of 4 copies of it ...

but its just terrible ... :-\

    (explanation of the 4 copies:
    Metriod NES Cart.
Metroid Classic NES Series GBA Cart. (gift from mom)
Unlockable Metriod Prime + Fusion bonus
Unlockable Metriod Zero Mission bonus )

i've given it another go on each of the 4 occasions, and i just hate the first metroid game ... thank god every one since then has been great ...

  • Brent_w, if it's too hard you can just say so. You don't have to go on dissing a game that is obviously got great play control, loads (more than any other Metroid perhaps) of secrets, and challenging bosses. There's no shame in admitting that game is hard----for years I'd beat it with Game Genie, until finally about 4 years ago I was able to do it alone.

Or is there some other reason for you to hate Metroid?

Anyway, it's always great to see another Metroid 2 fan. It's probably my favorite Game Boy game. It's at least tied with Metroid Fusion, in my opinion, but all the 2D Metroid games are great.

  • @gene_the_mofo: Me neither, but a Japanese rendition of Samus Aran beats a Retro Studios one any day. They can't get her damn shoulder pieces right, they're not supposed to be three times the size of her head...
