Is it still hard to get hold of nintendo consoles in Japan? I just don't understand how the sales are so consistent unless they're out of stock the whole time.

Nice, ps3 beating out ps2 a couple weeks now. I'm surprised people don't have so many DS's that they are forced to use them as paper weights and weapons in case of attack... some sort of rock and/or throwing projectile.

Well, the Wii increased by about 8000 units, but there wasn't any crazy release this week. Is it in preparation of Metroid? Or do people just loooooove MP8?

Anyway, Nintendo is going to have a monopoly on Japanese support if they keep this up, similar to the PS2 last-gen.

Do they sell the wii with out wii sports in Japan? Or do they sell just wii sports? Because the wii hardware sells are at 73,938, and the wii sports sold only 35,430. Anybody know what is with the descrepancy?

@jjpember: Wii Sports is not a pack-in in Japan.Did anyone here buy a Gameboy Micro? Why would you want a smaller screen? I do like the form, it is easier on the hands but the screen is too small.

@jjpember: Some people buy two copies of wii sports. Because they stuck their finger in the hole while they were inserting the disc, and got blood on it.

Let's see... roughly 50 million DS's worlwide, 20 million of which in Japan... Japan has a population of roughly 120 million... the ratio comes out to 1:6.

So there's roughly 1 DS for every 6 people in Japan. Shocked? I know I am!

It's all bad news for Nintendo, Look at that! Appalling! only a paltry 73,938 consoles sold, even their competitor could manage 153,819. They should just give up and go back to making playing cards. And I can only see it going downhill from here because there is no way on earth anything like Wii fit, Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers or Metroid can compete with the DS.

They just need to give up and let their competitor fight for second place with the DS.

This is no surprise at all, business as usual. LOL Wouldn't it be funny if PS3 finally started to outsell PS2 in the West soon?

21,000 sold in a week is pretty much the same as last week for ps3, it shows that PS3 can hold steady, a slight improvement. I wonder when they'll finally wake up to the fact it's not only the games but also the price that's holding them back.

It's been much easier recently to get a DS Lite and a Wii over here. Amazon Japan consistently has Wii systems in stock and DSes are usually available in most shops, just not all colors in stock at once. It's quite different from how it was just a couple of months ago: I hadn't even SEEN a Wii in a store before until early July. o_O

@scotty999: a "slight improvement" for PS3? They're consistently doubling the sales they had in the past few months. That's a pretty significant improvement if you ask me. You can't just expect it to balloon up to the 50,000s out of nowhere, especially in the middle of the summer.

Sorry @bangbangblah:, I should have explained myself better, by slight improvement I mean according to the last Media Create sales figures [kotaku.com] they sold 21,321. Whereas with these charts they sold 21,720 which is a slight improvement to the tune of 399 more units sold. Over a period of time Sony's sales are showing consistent signs of improvement, yes. This is a positive trend indeed. No, nobody expects 50,000 per week out of Sony, though you may have a point, maybe I expect too much out of Sony this early in the game.

Truthfully, it's a very interesting figure, especially since it's more or less consistent. While I know vgchartz isn't considered the most reputable source, all indications from that site are that the Wii has finally managed to surpass the Xbox 360's worldwide sales.

Which, when you compare the Wii's nine month sale time to the Xbox 360's twenty-one month sale time, is pretty fucking impressive. Pretty really fucking impressive.

@Gamemaster: Metroid is an FPS, Zelda is an action game. (But the hardcore fans do exist, just dont make up a majority of the masses with buying power)

Both of these categories never exactly did too well in Japan, it just doesnt fit the tastes of the people here.

@scotty999: Its cheap in Japan as it is, it really is only the games which are holding them back. Look what 1 game has done ps3 sales have doubled and stayed at 20K+ since its release. Just watch the sales when the biggies come out i.e. DMC4, Monster Hunter 3, FF13, MGS4 etc

If they did though, I can imagine Oblivion will sell more copies, since I personally know a lot of people who want to play the game but are a little unwilling to take the dive with the current pricing for just one game atm. But if there is a price drop, I think it might help push those off the fence and all.

Once MH3 comes out its gonna be a shitstorm of purchases for the PS3. I mean just look at how MHP2 saved the PSPs ass with insane sales in both the game and hardware.
