Marvel's Mark Miller, the guy who wrote the Civil War comic, had a recent sit down with comic site Newsarama to talk about his future plans and the impetus for Civil War.
Things were going swimingly until they got to the last question and the interviewer asked Mark if he would ever be interested in working outside the realm of comic books and Mark deftly inserted his foot into his mouth.
Like all my pals, the TV and movie people have come calling and even the computer game people (which is weird because games are for pedos and I have no interest).
Wait, a guy who writes comic books for a living is saying that games are for pedophiles? I think tipster Neal put it best: What a jackass, especially coming from someone who works in an industry that is often geared toward a young market. What is this, Comic Industry Stupidity Day?
I did note that the phrase was in parentheses, but judging by their use throughout the interview it appears they are meant to denote asides Miller said.

That is too funny. Some douche boy comic writer dogging games. I bet that Civil War comic gets him tons of pussy!
Ok comics have waaaaaay more twisted stuff in them than I've ever seen in a video game.
Yeah right like sane minds are at work there ...
That's pretty good lulz coming from a guy who writes about muscle men in short shorts as though it actually means something. The Marvel universe has been a hot, overlarge turd for a long long while now and all Civil War did was break the turd open and mush it up a bit, and if you think dogshit smells bad when it's just sitting there on the road, then try *stepping* in it. So while games might be for pedos, at least we're not, y'know, scat-fanciers.
Wait, which industry gave us Batman and his boy wonder Robin again?
JR
That has got to be the dumbest quote I've ever seen cited on Kotaku.
At one time the comics industry was more aimed at children, just as at one time the video game industry was. It really isn't fair for members of either to slander the other, since they both have to deal with the same ridiculous stigma.
That said, Mr. Millar (and it is Millar, not Miller) has a certain way about him. I can almost guarantee he was joking about the pedo thing. After all, the whole pedo/child abduction "aspect" of games has been in the media a lot lately, as we have seen here on Kotaku. I honestly don't think we should take every single thing that is said as being 100% serious when 100% of it is not meant to be...
@Ka-pow:
No wonder with retcons every few issues, metaverses, plot holes, reboots... and guys in spandex.
Wtf Millar!? U should be thankful for games coz thats what keeping me from strangling your sorry ass for your "timely" comics (-_-)
Yeah I don't think the guy was serious. If I had a nickel for every time I used the old "______ is for pedos" joke.....
Speaking as someone with a half-assed knowledge of comics but enough of a passing interest in them, I've got to say that Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was about 10 times better at telling a story, fleshing out the characters and playing off their personalities than Civil War was.
He was joking. Good lord. You can be sensitive about it if you want, bot don't pretend it's actually a real opinion held by him. It's something to say, not something to believe.
I'm not sure why this guy is feeling so arrogant as make such a stupid comment as he did, but comics are hardly a medium for literary conquest. I mean, it's not something I would be specifically proud of were I him. It's a job. You're writing cheesy, crap material for what is essentially a dying industry (ok so that's a stretch). Still, it's not like this fucker boned...who's hot these days, Grace Park...Jessica Alba. That works. It's not like he boned Jessica Alba, it's not as if he can really brag to his friends "Yeah, I, uh, I write for comic books."
Can he?
@Atheist Jew: Tell that to Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Art Spiegalman. Their "cheesy crap" is serious curicullum at some colleges. Not all comics are kids stuff. Just most of the mainstream stuff...
What a silly thing... Comic and Videogames people are almost the same, we are all pedos XD
Tony Stark tried to touch me where my bathing suit covers.
It was absolutely, clearly a joke. One of the failures of the written interview is that tone is lost, but please - that statement makes no sense if it were said in a serious sense, especially within the context given - he goes on to say that he's currently working on a number of non-comic projects, and no man is fool enough to say 'Here is my ethical system, I find these things apalling and tertiary in importance at best, and here's me betraying that for money." His first love is comics, and _that_ was the point Millar was trying to get across. Keep in mind, also, that "______ is for Pedophiles" is an old comic-book creator/reader accusation, once 25+ year old men are reading about boy wonders and space girls such diatribes come from every which way, and as such this comment ends up being even more than just a joke, it's a friendly 'haha! You're the new whipping boy!' jab.
@Astrobastard: Ain't that the truth. Civil War was a steaming pile of shit.
ah, another swipe from one of the worst writers in comics today.
Don't you have another iconic character to assassinate, Mister Millar?
I'd like to personally kick MM in the balls for wasting 10 months of my life and hundreds of dollars on that Civil War bullshit.
Hey Mark, I don't want to write comics because they take it up the pooper.
Asshole. I don't care if he was joking. Civil Wars has fucked up the Marvel Universe for years to come.
*Spoiler*
Cap in Jail? Who the fuck in their right mind would conclude a series like that?
Jeez, it's great to see how fans use arrogance and insults as a countermeasure.
Now suddenly comics are "cheesy", "crappy", a meaningless "turd" and so on.
Millar is a jackass, but in a good way. I, as Xeronius, can almost guarantee it's a joke, a part of his sarcastic nature.
So cut the crap off, not only it's childish, but also disgusting.
With that said, I still feel the end of Civil War just sucked.
@Karlott, You are absolutely right, Cival War was a steaming pile.
It's just too bad, that Marvel's Quality has taking a nose dive after Joe Quesada lost his way. "Oh I know lets do a crossover every year and it'll interupt the flow and force writers and artists to do what I want and live out my fanboy dreams. Oh oh! Let's completely ruin Spider-man's life by outing him, putting yet another bounty on him, and having his wife leave him, because you know having one glimpse of happiness in spider-man's life doesn't make him believable." Now hopefully marvel will get a new EOC soon so that I can respect marvel again.
It's Mark Millar, he'll say *anything* to get himself some publicity.
@Atheist Jew:
Sin City by Frank Miller is studied here at USC (South Carolina, not California) inn English classes...Man I wish I had been in that class.
They also studied the Fight Club original book.
I don't really follow comics in the least, but how old is this guy? This quote is so out-of-touch it borders on comedic.
So im guessing everyone who says he is rubbish hasnt read The Ultimates?
Oh come on. There is a zero percent chance that he was not joking.
I've read The Ultimates. It isn't the Second Coming either. "You think this A on my head stands for FRANCE??" was one of the dumbest lines ever.
He probably was joking, however. As to the pedo remark, I must reveal his 'The Unfunnies' for consideration.
WOW, now i have a SECOND reason to kick his ass when I see him at Wizard World Los Angeles. The first of course being the retarded ending of the Civil War series. Doesn't he know that most comic book readers PLAY VIDEO GAMES!?!?!?!
Civil War was a decent series with kind of a letdown ending, but that's almost to be expected after the expectations were so high. You guys saying "it sucked" are either kneejerk reacting to this article, or you didn't read it to begin with.
And if I was a pedophile, I'd be heavily insulted. Gamers are all fat, lazy leeches who never go outside and will never kiss a girl. They also frequently murder their classmates.
WTF alot of kids play Games so what exactly is that suppoused to mean?
Now that I think of it, I do find some girls sexually attractive...
It's a shitty comment to make, especially given that if it did have a humorous tone, print really wouldn't carry it.
-Murderer: check
-Fat: check
-Lazy: check
-Leech: check
-Social Outcast: check
-Pedophile: check
What will be the next label? Rapist? Escaped Convict? Terrorist? Canadian?
Wait, I'm Canadian. check.
At least gamers aren't racist, passive-aggressive rape fantasists. I'd love to see Mark Millar write something that didn't rely on overt shock value for its dramatic kicks just once. If the film adaptation of his 'Wanted' actually turns a buck, I'll officially give up on the human race.
When you're in an industry which is considered nerdy, you can't call another industry's product something "for nerds." You gotta up the ante a bit, lest you be seen as a hypocrite!
I think he was kidding. Or at least sarcastic.
Well, he was joking.
Maybe he saw the japanese sister rape simulator games, which that country loves so much?
Mark Millar's exactly the sort of ass that would say something like that just to piss you off. He's also completely unimportant in the grand scheme of things, being a half-assed knockoff of better writers like Ellis. This is a guy who ripped off a story idea just so he could portray Superman as a communist. A guy who managed to butcher one of the best series out there (The Authority)when he took over for Ellis.
Ignore him.
@Xeronius: Neil Gaiman I can understand. Art Speigelman I can understand.
But MILLER?! Come on! ;)
Games are for pedophiles.
Comic books are for men who like women old enough to have gone through puberty. Really, really gone through puberty.
I believe this link is very relevant:

@KaneRobot: "You guys saying "it sucked" are either kneejerk reacting to this article, or you didn't read it to begin with..."
It did suck and I read it.
1. It was hastily thrown together because Marvel wanted a big event to offset DC's Crisis
2.The big delay. It completely destroyed the flow of the entire Marvel line. Not just creatively, but financially because they didn't want tie-in books (ie: EVERY Marvel comic) to ship before the Civil War books. Leading to:
3: It was a mess to read. It was next to impossible to tell what happened before what and those lazy bastards at Marvel didn't even attenpt to help you out with a simple editors note (This comic takes place before..) like they used to do.
4. The scale of the battles made everything seemed crammed into the book and it was extremely hard to tell what the hell was going on most of the time. The art was the best thing about the books though.
5. The end. WHAT THE FUCK. Added to the fact that the series made me hate Iron Man who used to be one of my favorites...I thought the idea of Iron Man and Cap going head to head would be cool, and it was, but the ending made the whole thing seem like a big waste.
dont care if he was joking. his comics have sucked, from what ive seen. absolutely no surprise at all to find out that such a lame and socially disconnected "joke insult" is commonly flung in the comics industry, because the people inhabiting it are exactly the sort who'd enjoy calling each other paedophiles.
What a completely inappropriate comment, I can't believe anyone would say something like that in an interview. Does the guy even realise how many of his own fans he just offended?
Yeah, I agree with Claudius and the rest that think Civil War sucked. That ending was so full of crap and I can't believe Cap would be thrown in Jail and that ass of a woman whose son died (an obvious allegory of Cindy Sheehan) would get her way...that is not good comic book writing.
But on this topic, after reading Civil War, I am not surprised to see how stupid this guy really is with a stupid comment on games like that.
He's joking. Having met him on a few occasions and seen him speak at panels, it's obvious that this is his typical sense of humor. It just doesn't come across too well when an interviewer doesn't not the tone of the comment or conversation.
Millar (not Miller, btw) comes off as an ass most of the time. I mean, I think he's funny, but he still comes off as an ass.
Another wannabe loser writer. Of course not as bad as Hardaway's comments but there seems to be someone shooting themselves in the foot every day now.
...ya'll realize Iron Man's dead 2 months... right?
How's anyone actually taking that quote seriously? Come on, people!
I'd just like to take this moment to congratulate Mark Miller on successfully trolling and setting off some of the more sensitive gamers on this blog.
Come on people, have a sense of humour please!
This was obviously a JOKE! And a funny one in my opinion. Maybe it was slightly in poor taste but we're not the taste police (if anything we are usually victims of the taste police).
He doesn't believe that or think it in any remote way at all! I'm pretty sure it was much funnier when audible rather than in print.
We may not be pedos but obviously a lot of us lack a sense of humour!
Doesnt he know Marvel has a shit ton of videogames based on their books?
