Ecko's Theories on Getting Up's Sales

scarfv.jpg

Is blaming your game's slowish sales on some gamers "having a bug up their ass for anything urban" playing the race card? Ecko does in an interview for the Metro. Though, Ecko also intelligently points out that it is also the end of a console cycle and gamers aren't spending the money on current-gen games that they once did. Ecko raises an interesting point, however. Are gamers averse to "urban" games? Like the reader who sent in the tip pointed out - Ecko must've missed the sales figures for 50 Cent's Bulletproof.

Thanks, Jeremy

  • Uhhh... Would he not consider GTA: San Andreas "urban"? That was only, like... One of the best selling games ever. Maybe someone should tell him his game sucks.

  • This naturally explains why gta:sa sold so poorly. /sarcasm Making an urban game is all about getting a certin feel and atracting a certin audience. If people like myself don't like said feel then it would take some great gameplay to trancend that. According to the reviews I've seen this game simply dosn't provide that. They would have been better to port jet grind radio to all systems and dress beat and company in ecko clothes, because I would have bought that.

  • or could it be that gamers don't care about "tagging" crap. that could be a possiblity. Blame it on everything else except the game.

  • Idiot. Most gamers arn't living neck deep in Time Warners, Viacoms, and Vivendi Universals 'urban' life image that he's milking. I don't like football, so I don't play Madden. Most gamers don't listen to Polka music. If there were a Polka DDR game, and gamers didn't buy it, does that mean they hate Czech's?

  • Actually, Ecko's theory is: More Accessories on your body = More Cool

  • Whats with the metrosexual look?

  • 8.4 Gamespot rating aside, a game about spray painting your name on walls just doesn't sound like very much fun to me.

  • Well, I will give him credit where it's due. His game reminded me so much of Jet Set Radio Future that I went out and bought that great game instead of his crappy one.

  • Who needs Ecko's game when we can do the same thing (tagging) in games as far back as Counter-Strike. HAH!

  • I thought it was weird that the evil Mayor in the game - at least in the ad 'cause I didn't play it - had the Korean last name of "Sung". It initially looked like he was trying to play on African American vs Korean friction, but I dismissed it and gave the dude the benefit of doubt. Well, if Ecko wants to paint every video game player that doesn't want to with a broad brush, then I'm going back to thinking he is weird prejudiced metro dude trying unsuccessfully play the race card.

  • I beat this game in one sitting! this game is way to easy. no way to make it harder. the fight system sucks... also the section of tags sucks. would of been cool to make you're own.... but nooo I admit the story was interesting but the ending sucked ASS. but I still want to buy a "still free" sweater :-p

  • GTA? Something most gamers can get behind. Skate Boarding? Fairly mainstream-cool: I'd at least heard of Tony Hawk before his games came out. Mark Ecko? Spray Painting? ::crickets:: Who the f*ck wants to play that game? At full price?

  • he looks like a harry potter wanabe in that picture. oh yea.. this game was soo fing buggy.. about 15 times I got a glitch that stoped me from progressing in the game. most common was getting stuck wile spray painting mode.

  • BAd reviews aside, I was genuinely interested in this game until i saw what the fighting system turned into. Though, the tagging element and finding the places to tag still looks interesting to me. I wouldn't play the race card Marc, just dont let Infogrames/Atari publish your work next time. On a personal note I thought GTA:SA was rubbish. As a person of color I found it very insulting that the whole "south central L.A." theme and something that showcases negativity could be the basis of a videogame programmed, designed, written by, and marketed by white people. Sure.. thats a big dose of prejudice right there, and I know you cant make the industry not 80% white males overnight, bit pre-ruined the game for me. I think racial stereotyping is bad, and it really shouldn't be the basis for someone's amusement, in any form. Comedy, music, games, literature, art...racism and prejudice isn't funny.

  • It's funny how there is so many biased opinions here. Have any of you actually played the game? Don't knock it just because its by Marc Echo or just because its a game about tagging. If I were to go by that logic, I would've not bought Guitar Hero then since I listen to hip-hop most of the time. Also, you can say that GTA is urban but that is not why it sold so many copies. It sold because it had the Grand Theft Auto name slapped on it. If the game would've just been called San Andreas and made by another company it probably would've been "just another urban type" game.

  • I own the game. I'm only holding on to it becuse my brother want's to paly it. once he finshes the game it's going back to the game store so I can get in store credit and buy another game. I would rate this game 4 out of 10

  • What's this about sales? He was talking about the reviews the game got in the interview, not sales. As for the game, I liked the concept right up until I heard that Shepard Fairey would be in the game. That pretty much null and voided it for me.

  • So who's this Mark Ecko dude (is he related to Mr. Eko from "Lost"?), and what cheesy game does he think should have sold better?

  • what i didn't like was the promo email they sent me which was a mock letter from an agency like the RAA or w.e saying i had illegal files.

  • got screen shot of this promo e-mail?

"The code is as polished as you can make it on a no-hard-drive console like the PS2. So, there are technical limitations that people just can't understand." If you're reading this, Mr. Ecko, I'd like to point out that just because YOU can't understand the technical limitations involved does not mean that gamers can't either. Actually, I, for one, do understand the technical limitations of the PS2. Also, blaming your game's slow sales and mixed reviews on anything besides the game's lack of quality just makes you look like a jerk trying to muscle your way into an industry you don't truly understand.

  • Hate to tease you even more, but there is even better content for the second part of this interview. I'll be posting it on Monday.

  • The only thing I'm "averse" to is bad video games made by suburban white dudes who use the word "urban" in an entertainment context. Ecko: you stink.
