Over on Warcraftmovies.com, Martin Falch has just released a true masterpiece of machinima. Tales of the Past III is a 90 minute movie that features some pretty big names from World of Warcraft lore. Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore, Arthas, and many more make an appearance in this epic story of good versus evil.
Since the death of Yimo and the shattering of the Orb of Visions, the Horde and the Alliance have accepted an unstable peace agreement. However, old hatreds stand in the way of cooperation and at the same time, chaos erupts as the Lich King finally takes action.Unfortunately I missed parts I and II (downloading now), so a bit of the backstory is missing for me, but I was completely floored by the quality of this fan film. While voice acting ranges from average to alright, the writing is downright brilliant at times, and the action is just...wow. Think Advent Children. Seriously.
In all honesty I downloaded the movie expecting to flip through it and write a little blurb, but I wound up watching the entire thing. I even teared up a little, though I won't admit it. The whole thing is 2.3GB to download, but completely worth it. If anything, watch it for the most appropriate use of Metal Gear Solid music outside of MGS ever. I'm going to go hook my PC up to the 42in LCD and watch it again, with popcorn.

WoW is getting out of proportion. I would play it but i know it would consume me.
Sweet
Downloading this now. I hope it's as good as you say it is. When someone hypes something up as much as you did, I'm always a little disappointed.
@danteix: Yep, me to. I know its a great game and I have watched quite a few friends play it. But I have made a promise to myself not to play it...ever.
So far so good.
@XerXer00: Nothing more interesting to say? You must be new here.
Glad to see this posted, really deserved it.
I decided after 2 years of playing it that it was just too good for me. I'm not responsible enough to play this and actually get anything else done, so I'll just stick with less addictive games for now. It's like a really awesome book that you can't put down. That goes on FOREVER.
Back on topic, downloading now. A Fahey recommendation is always to be heeded in my books.
Downloading now. Hopefully it's as good as you say it is. :)
So what kind of familiarity do you need with the game to enjoy this?
Downloading now as well...I'll let you know what I think about it in a week when it's done downloading ;oP
Ill watch this later. Got to get to cleaning asap. As with my flurry of posts Im sure you all can assume I have been procrastinating, which I have. D:
YOu don't really need to know much about the game to enjoy it. It is Lore-based but it still doesn't require any previous knowledge of the game to understand it.
Just watched about 5 minutes of it and I just couldn't get into. The voice acting is pretty bad, and the animation is no where near as good as that of Advent Children. For the first 5 minutes, I found the directing rather bad. But of course, this is a Machinima movie, and for that it is pretty good compared to what's out there. But still, not good enough to keep my attention for more than 5 minutes.
Seriously, every single person commenting was blown away by this piece as well.
A bit shocking that a 20 year student with no ambition to get involved in the film industry made something this ambitious for fun.
My hats off to him for showing that creativity doesn't require excessive age or budget.
am I seeing things? this thing is 2.3 gig?
oh man, that'll take me like a month to download considering how rubbish broadband is here in NZ.
Poos.
I wonder how many people have left their significant (or insignificant) other, because they were addicted to WoW?
@frypandan: "I wonder how many people have left their significant (or insignificant) other, because they were addicted to WoW?"
If it's even 1 it's far too many.
WoW machinimas can be awesome, and your short praise has gotten me very interested! Downloading nauw!
@NeoAkira: If it happened in Everquest it will happen in WoW.
Just because WoWs userbase is much larger than EQs, it ups the %age of the chance of it going down.
@NeoAkira: Then again you can think of it in the sense of how many have hooked up or gotten married due to WoW.
Unless I dloaded the wrong one, it's just a lot of talking.. God bless the fans, but voice actors they are not..
@Witzbold: Over here~
Met my girlfriend in FFXI 3.5 years ago.
@Blind_Evil: See there we go! Happy ending as a result of a gaming addiction!
Congrats! :)
God what a terrible engine to make a machinima in. Not to mention the author had to go and use Metal Gear Solid music, which should never even be in the same room as World of Warcraft. I did watch a bit though, and as machinima goes it looked pretty good. Most machinima sucks though so thats not saying much.
@Blind_Evil:
My ex g/f left me for a guy she met on FFXI.
It gets better. There is a bit of a long setup.
@MrSatan: Actually, I've notice quite a bit of sources using MGS music. South Park and "Dude, Where's My Mount?" both used it.
@danteix: YOU ARE NOT PREPARED! ahahah, had to do it.
@NeoAkira:
On one of my old servers a wife left her husband and kids to live with someone she met while playing.
Not sure if she came or what though.
@Ignus:
If she came back that is.
Just finished watching it. Pretty slow for the first half hour or so, but from that point on, it was pretty impressive. I've never played World of Warcraft, so from a machinima point of view, I don't know how difficult it was to make, but the shots in it were certainly more complex than I would have thought possible in the game.
That was pretty freaking impressive.
Flipped through a couple scenes.
Questionable music, impressive animation, and man the close-ups are not pretty.
Wow. 90 minutes of not playing a game. That's gotta be fun.
