Bandai Namco recently announced that it's plugging the plug on Gundam MMO Gundam Online. The game, which launched in September 2005, will go offline on December 15th at 10am Japan Time. Good news! Gameplay will be free, free, free from October 1st to the bitter end, but no new accounts will be created in that period. I haven't played Gundam Online so I don't know if it was good or not. But, you'd think a MMO based on Gundam would be a big money-maker in Japan — just like you'd think a MMO based on the Star Wars universe would be in the West.

dam warcraft kills another one
They should make a Star Wars MMO! How could it not be awesome?
Oh, wait....
I'm part of Xbone-Vanguard, one of the two known english-speaking guilds in Gundam Online (we're Zeon, the others are the Blue Banshees, Federation scum!).
Anyway, yeah, we're all a bit deflated by the news. The game was cheap too: no purchase fee, just 13 USD per month. Just so you guys know, the game was originally announced in 2002 and promised a LOT of stuff: complete reproduction of all of Earth, Space Colonies, asteroid bases, lunar cities... it was going to be huge. Of course, it was bogged down by having a single, laggy server, little graphical optimisation (despite looking nice enough), mostly uninteresting locales and oh yes, the fact they didn't even try to commercialise it in the west.
A wasted opportunity IMO. If done right, a giant robot MMO could be unique enough to attract many players. If only they'd made the gameplay more action based and unique, etc etc etc... But the reality is that few franchised games are good, particularly in Gundam.
Oh, and as a last bit of info, the announcement did NOT include anything about subscriptions going down. They simply didn't give a reason and thanked us all for our patronage :(
what the hell...I've never heard of this!
Was it a Japan only thing? I would so have played a Gundam MMO
There was a Gundam MMO!? I can see that being incredible. Guess they screwed it up, for shame.
@RagingTowers: Same here. I would have loved to have played this it sounds like probably the only sci-fi MMO that would interest me. Too bad its too late to ever play it now though :(
Ba-zing!

Had to read that a few times before I understood the posting. I think Brian means "pulling the plug" not "plugging the plug"
Proof that yet again, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink the poorly marketed, under-developed, bug-filled water of a horribly implemented MMO.
Star Wars Galaxies promised big, as I'm sure this Gundam MMO did. Unfortunately, if you promise big, and then forget you even made those promises and deliver crap, you get crap in return.
@RagingTowers:
from what I've heard it wouldn't have appealed to western tastes anyhow. I know a few guys that gave it a shot and said it was quite dull.
I played it for a while. I'm a big Gundam fan, but the game was total crap. People keep thinking Star Wars Galaxies, but this does not compare to how bad Gundam online was. Star Wars Galaxies had the semblance of a brilliant game hidden under ton of broken stuff, but Gundam Online... it shipped without most features implemented and just so much of the game was so badly done..... One example, NPC's... he NPC' in the game were completely unanimated. They just stood at attention in a spot and majority had no purpose, you couldn't really speak with them and they didn't animate at all. The whole thing was a mess.
Nice dig at SWG there. I loved that game...until I became one of the alpha testers they tapped for the combat upgrade-- where we did no testing and every opinion of ours was completely ignored.
*crosses fingers* Here to hoping Front Mission Online will make it across the pond before it gets its plug pulled. I <3 Giant Robots!
@eigokyoukan:
Wow, i didnt even know there was a Front Mission online in the first place?
I need to get back to playing 3, i havent touched it in like 3 years...
