Leisure Suit Larry Creator Talks Wedgies

Game site Gamasutra sat down with Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe and discussed his upcoming "action comedy" Sam Suede. The Larry games were always noted for not only their sex (and often lack thereof), but also their humor. Says Lowe:

I think the easiest comparison would be that where action games today have violence as their currency, we have humor. So picture every place that you would shoot somebody or slice somebody open or something else. Instead, put in a laugh there. That's what we're going to do. So there's going to be guards, but instead of slitting their throats, you'll give them a wedgie.
A stealth title with wedgies?! I knew there was something missing in my gaming experience.

  • Why does it have a realistic art style? Are they so unartistic that they can't come up with anything with a more interesting visual style? Realism helps some games but not all. I wish american game developers could realise that.

  • What about Planet Moon, a studio that is consistent with humor, though its games tend to stumble after a while? Or the escapades of Jak & Daxter/Ratchett & Klank? The insane left-of-field humor of Katamari? The grin-inducing musings in Bone? The inane conversations on the streets of San Andreas? Granted, when I try and think about it I can't pull up too many game names, but there are quite a lot of funny titles out there. A wedgey isn't exactly funny unless you're in a frat house or hang around with people who like Tom Green. That's just one kind of humor. And while the LSL games were funny, they didn't match the SCUMM titles of the same era, plus humor was a large component of other Sierra Online games as well. Maybe Al is referring to make a comedy-centric game, but since humor is a pretty subjective thing (Look at Eddie Izzard's San Francisco and Bill Hick's London performances), we need a bit more clarity about. But there definitely is a lot of humor in today's games. Al's just looking for an angle to pimp his own idea. Btw, I don't think 'creator of LSL' carries much clout with the new-school generation of gamers. And I'm getting sick of all these old-school designers showing up and telling us what's wrong with the industry. Meanwhile gaming has never had it better.
