In Korea, pro gamers don't just play StarCraft. Pretty soon, they could be playing the stock market. Brokerage firm Goodmorning Shinhan Securities is pondering whether to bring on professional StarCraft players for lucrative day trading.
"Earlier this month, we interviewed a pair of professional gamers to check whether they can be trained as day traders," a Goodmorning Shinhan spokesman said. "The mastery of professional gamer's hands and their familiarity with the Internet environment can be good qualities to become day traders," he added, reports The Korea Times. The player's identities were not disclosed.
Blizzard's real-time RPG StarCraft is the cat's pajamas in Korea, where there are cable TV channels showing the game round-the-clock. Pros are known for their quick reflexes and finger dexterity — must haves for day traders, known to process multiple online transactions a minute.
"The hitch is that the professional gamers have no knowledge in finance or investment. We will see whether they can develop qualities necessary for day traders through training," the Goodmorning Shinhan Securities spokesman said. If the gamers are a bust, it'll be Goodnight Shinhan Securities.
