Konami "Not Set Up" For Multi-Platform Development

Pro Evo 2008 is brilliant. Can't stop playing it! But then, I have it on 360. Konami's PS3 port wasn't so hot. Indeed, it was awful. So awful that it's forced a rethink of how they do things over there, with series boss Seabass Takatsuka admitting they're a little behind the times:

As a developer, we've worked the same way since the days of the SNES. We're simply not set up for multi-platform development.
Honesty is the best policy, Seabass. He promises that next year's version will be much better, as they're taking the game "back to the drawing board" to make sure gamers of a particular format don't get the shaft ever again.

So EA makes Fifa and Konami makes PES. Both companies suck at multi-plat. In other words, us PS3 owners who like soccer are fucked on both sides. I say separate the market morons. EA, since you have an ex-Microsoft guy at your head, take the 360. ANd you Konami, since you are so deep with Sony, just take the PS3. There. Settled.

  • blame developers, not sony =)

it's not their fault the ps3 has no rumble pack, or is harder than ass to develop for.

fuck you game developers! it's all your fault =)

  • Why don't they just go back to developing for the SNES if they're still working the same way as back then? Some of you guys'd probably pee your pants if they put out a new SNES game :P

  • That's honestly the best excuse I've heard from a dev about bad ports. EA can't use it since they put Madden on everything every year. Especially for the non-westren developers, the playstation has pretty much dominated since it came out. Except for a few Saturn games, just how many games have they ported since the SNES days?

@death_is_the_spice_of_life: No you're all wrong. Let's blame Sony. No developer at all can make a decent game on their console which doesn't bring anything new to the market and breaks all the time. Even their own games suck because in fact, the thing is a toaster and they are selling it for a gaming console. Fuck you Sony!

  • Also, did they get a patch/update out for the PS3 version yet, or no? I would think they should be focused on fixing the major problems they caused, rather than conducting interviews about the major problems they caused.

  • @MCW07:

They did. You just have to do one tiny thing. :)

    [kotaku.com]

  • this is a non issue because PES is an inferior football game to FIFA these days.

My PS3 works, my 360 does not and I'm fine with that.

  • @Slashlen: Ah, right. Thank you. I remember seeing that now :) Well then, the problem would not have affected me, but still it's ridiculous all the same.

If the Playstation platform was the only game in town then things wouldn't be this bad, or at least we wouldn't have a point of reference to realize what we were missing. This folks, the thing we are seeing happen to Sony right now, is natural selection. An inferior platform we is being done in by market forces and if Sony doesn't mature fast enough to offer developers a similar or better platform to Microsoft's XNA or if the games industry does not change fast enough to match the PS3's ideal environment for survival then the PS3 will die a slow and painful death (or a very swift one prevent the hemorrhaging of more Sony money).

This is a phenominon that has been increasing with PS3 software development: First, games just were skipped on the PS3 platform (i.e. NBA 07). Then game's where released but with terrible performance (Madden 08) and finally we are seeing a third round where things have gotten past the visual failures but still leave many things broken under the hood (COD4, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, etc...). I believe the forth round will be the last hurdle but the toughest where developers and publishers will realize what it takes to deliver a quality and comparable PS3 title but also fast the significantly more expensive process of doing so. This combined with the install base and attach rate of the current PS3 system will prove a formidable challenge for the PS3 platform. Should the platform survive this, one thing is for sure, Sony will never enjoy the market dominance that the the PS1 and PS2 garnered only because developers will never put their eggs in one basket for a very long time if ever again.

Again this is my own take on the whole thing and Japan is going to prove to be a strange wild card in how this will all play out but that's its own market and I'm not sure it is showing healthy market patterns at the moment.

@okenny :): Lol I like your logic but I don't agree with your analogy of natural selection. Of all the consoles, the PS3 is more fit to resist the environment, with its larger medium, its free open online structure, its built-in hard drive, etc. It can even resist cold and HEAT! And I think it's the only platform out there that can survive only with its first-party titles (seriously, how long can you play Mario and Zelda?). If we would consider its features as genes, we see that they are already affecting its competitors, as the 360 now has built in HDMI. At the end of the day, it will probably produce more offspring or at least, have more "genes" out for the next generation.

  • "Kick his ass, Seabass!"

  • The better port of a football game is on a console that is exponentially more popular in the US than anywhere else.

    /definition of irony

  • @slomo788: That guarantees that the platform could theoretically remain viable longer than the others, but that only benefits Sony, since they don't have to put out a new one. Third parties aren't Sony, their profits don't hinge on the existence of the platform.

The PS3 was designed on the basic idea that Sony could do whatever they wanted and third parties would fall in line behind them. "Screw the Xbox, these guys made the PS2! Let's support them!" They didn't expect Microsoft to aggressively push in on their market, and they didn't expect Nintendo to run off in the other direction to go frolic in the flowers.

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 09:16 PM on 11/23/07 *

@slomo788: The thing is that Sony made a very nice piece of hardware but publishers don't work on hardware, they work on platforms. Having the best hardware guarantees you little but having the best platform which includes company support, development tools, and acceptable price of entry for consumers is crucial. Sony can sell a Ferrari and Microsoft can sell a Toyota but what do you think the consumers and accessory makers are going to support? It's that simple.

  • Not set up for multiplatform development?

Wii owners register the tiniest measurable amount of surprise.

  • Image of slomo788 slomo788 at 09:18 PM on 11/23/07 *

@Moonshadow101: Well how about this? The PS3 was designed with the same idea of the PS2 with a little bit more. How was it like the PS2? It's boycotted or spit on by devs who say it's too "hard to work on," until a GTAIII-like game comes out and everybody wants one. I know, we're still waiting for that game... How was it with a little bit more? Because this time Playstation is the console with the most value, not XBox.
In fact, nobody knows what they had in mind while designing it but Kutaragi and the other bosses. So let's stop speculating and just wait and see.

  • As I see it everyone thought that we would have to wait until next year to see Sony bringing the big guns and it turns out that right now the ps3 just got a good number of great exclusives, and with a lower price it is already showing great progress in the Japanese charts.

All these exclusives are showing that good quality games can be made for the ps3, ending with the notion that that the structure doesn't allow it and making programmers of faulty ports looking like lazy asses.

Once the American charts start looking like the Japanese ones, which shouldn't take too long, all these companies are going to change their colors about what they think about the system. And if past experience is any indication, money attracts publishers like crazy, and they won't miss the opportunity of making a good game if they think that the console will help their profits.

Something that people don't seem to realize is that the only reason why someone would buy a faulty system with 33% failing rate is because there wasn't any real competition to the kind of games that the 360 offered, and people had to settle from lack of choice. But what will happen once the good games ratio between the two system changes? I must emphasize that I don't dislike the good games that have come out for the 360 or the brand itself, but the RROD should have been fixed by now and it is just a slap in the face for xbox supporters to have to continually fear the dammed thing. My guess is that when the ps3 shows everyone to be a good choice the tide should change very quickly.

Sorry if this note enrages anyone as I don't mean to start a flame war (some other posters have done a fine job at it so far), but it is just my opinion.

  • this may b a really stupid question..but considering were talking about konami, would this have any effect on metal gear solid coming up?

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 10:09 PM on 11/23/07 *

@RRoD: Well it would follow that they are less likely to bring MGS4 to the 360 in light of this fact.

  • im having way too much fun with fifa's 5v5 online play to even care.

  • @slomo788:
youve been going full force all week defending the ps3, relax man, i agree w/ you the ps3 shouldn't get bad potrs, but don't bash other systems over it.

or i'll tear your goddamned head off, G.

  • Image of slomo788 slomo788 at 10:18 PM on 11/23/07 *

@feartheraven: I bashed other systems? That's one thing I always try not to do, because in a few weeks I might find myself defending the same thing I was hating and look like a moron. I'm biased over the PS3, I won't hide it, but I always try to be fair to the others. I think.

  • @slomo788:
well, good pic, you have my support.

  • Konami is a joke with their online play and knowledge of how to develop for the PS3. This isn't the first Konami game to release on the PS3 with gimped online play and frame rate issues. Pro Yakyu Spirits 4 released in November with frame rate issues and HORRIBLE online play. They used the same Konami ID bullshit as Winning Eleven uses. Konami is completely clueless lately.

  • Er...released in April. Finger must've slipped.

  • @Masterpain22:

For the record, the reason people are buying the PS3 here in japan isnt because of the load of amazing exclusive games, those dont exist. The best selling PS3 titles in the last month were on the 360 as well. Ratchet sold like crap, lair is...well....lair, and there are many titles that are not even out here. Basically the last 6 months software sales consist of Dynasty warriors and gundam games which are mixed with dynasty warriors. Not what I call quality work, not to mention both are multiplat.

People are buying the PS3 simply because its gotten cheaper recently, not because its the better choice. That coupled with brand loyalty I would think. I would be really surpised if sony started showing massive sales on par with the wii in the US prior to them getting a massive boost of whats important to gamers, that being games ofcourse.

Anyways, there is no excuse for konami's draconian approach to this. Any modern company should be setup for multiplat support on an equal level.

  • I don't give a shit. The dude's name is fucking SEABASS!!! You can't go wrong with a name like that!
    /sarcasm off

I'm not surprised that Konami is "not set up" for multiplat. There has pretty much been one dominating console in every gen until the last, when the Xbox finally put up a decent fight up. MS and the big N learned a lot from the last round and Sony finally has a good fight on their hands this time, so it's time for devs to step up and realize that multiplat needs to be a higher priority.

  • No MGS4 for 360 than.

  • Is his name suzuki or really the English "seabass"?

"Check this out I'm giving my kid an English name."

    鱸 (すずき) (n) (uk) sea bass; perch;

  • I STILL don't get this! Seabass said it was developed on the PS3 as the lead platform. It ISN'T a port. If so, then how the f@@k can it be worse on the ps3 than 360?! The mind boggles. Is it really that bad? I'm getting it on ps3 cos I can't be arsed waiting 3 months for a us 360 release and also can't deal with the 360 d-pad... it's such a bummer.

btw I remember that in a previous post you said that (control-wise) it's the same on the 360 pad as a ps2 pad luke but it's just not true. 2007 and that d-pad almost killed it for me. the sticks are great but the pad is terrible.

  • I meant it's a bummer that the ps3 version is allegedly so bad btw. I just need this game NOW and obviously the ps3 one is the only multi region one, and so is my only option... I do love that pad for pro evo though

  • makes sense, i mean to make a good ps3 game, you can't just port it over. Everyone is learning from EA's reoccuring mistake of trying to port games over.

ubisoft and activision/inifity games are doing it right and making ps3 development completely separate.

  • @okenny :):
Although I like your analogy, I don't think it's logical at all. I remember one major article that dealt with a similar theme.. the death spiral or something to that effect. But the basic fact remains that regardless of how poorly the PS3 has done so far, the future success and potential of Sony is nearly undeniable, even if it ends up with a smaller market share than the Wii or even the 360 this generation. And as a developer, you cannot choose to ignore a gaming console that will have many a millions of consumers, nor can you continue to give yourself black eyes by shitting out crappy ports lest they program themselves out of relevance in that market. (It seems these days that developers are realizing just that and are setting strategies to avoid focusing only on today's cash cow, the 360.

So far, luckily for Sony, their first party and near-first party developers have come through for them and as long as Wipeout HD, UT3, KZ2, MGS4, Haze, Lil Big Planet, Pain, FFXIII, and the likes are in the works, I cannot see the PS3 being anything but successful in the long run. Not a doubt in my mind.

Alls I know is, competition sure is freakin great for us! The competitive prices, the gluttony of games, the humble pie spread equally to all major compaines involved.. I hope that the big three as well as any other hardware company who wants to jump in continue to do their best to win my hard-earned money. And guys, I'm willing. Definitely willing.

  • Yep. Here it is. Konami unwittingly admitting that they are a dinosaur.

I ranted about this before so I'm not going to again, but Capcom is truly showing out ALL other Japanese 3rd-party devs. When DMC is released and the two versions are virtually identical, they will have officially put themselves at the top of all Japanese development when it comes to this gen. They saw the benefit of this approach (which Western devs have for years already) and will be reaping the benefits of it.

Its time for Konami (and S-E too!) to enter the 21st century. SNES was an entirely different market.

  • Why is it released so late in the US? You would think Konami would want at least the 360 version on the shelves for the holiday season. I still play a couple online games of 07 every night.

  • Ok, so Konami isn't ready for multiplatform development, but why does it always have to be the PS3 (I got PES for it and the slowdown is sad compared to the Xbox Live demo I played)? Kutaragi you are a damn fucking liar. You told me the 360 was a pile of shit compared to your machine which was rumored to be more powerful than god itself. I even felt bad for MS when their PR sent that article to IGN and claimed the 360 was technically superior to the PS3 after the specs were revealed. FUCK man, this is the last time I eat PR bullshit. I really want to sell my PS3 after I realized my supposedly superior version of PES doesn't even match the framerate of the demo I played for weeks in anticipation of the damn game I decided to import.

  • the game came just out, so i can buy the whooooole year a broken game? no working revision? are they working on it?ahhh....ok....its easier to wait a year, than going to the shop and get my money back or a redone verion°-°"

Are the developers even offer reworked version, with better compatibility nowadays °-°" you know...like send your game in get a working one? like "i paid the whole príce give me a whole game"

  • @DARTH_TIGRIS:
    AMEN TO THAT!
(You took the words right out of my mouth.)

  • The difference between the FIFA team and WE/PES team is that EA sports has much larger development team and more resources. The developers of PES 2008 are pretty much the same dozen or so people that started out with the ISS series on the SNES and PS1.They all ready have their hands full making a good game on one platform, three separate(PC,360.PS3)* platforms and creating cross online play have proven to be a task too big for them.

*if I'm not mistaken, the Wii version was made by another team.

  • @Malkavian: "if I'm not mistaken, the Wii version was made by another team."

    the A-Team?

  • His name is rally "Seasbass"!?

  • @as702ecs: No,the same guys that did the PES manager game.
All though the idea of a zombie George Peppard sitting down and coding with Mr.T to make a football game is hilarious.

  • @Malkavian: now that would be a plan. full of win!

  • This is horseshit....

I went to an interview at Konami in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago, and they shoved it down our throats about how "Konami is a company focused intently on multi-platform development." "Konami is spending millions of dollars to be a 'mult-platform' 'multi-genre' 'multi-region' developer.....blah blah blah

Looks like that was all just a bunch of BS

  • HAHAHAHHA!!!

How do you PS3 football gamer feel, after been given the Nintendo Wii-Port fuck-over?

Not so next-gen now huh? HUH?!

i want you to look at your crappy pes port, and then what as everyone slag off the ps3 with "oh, see how shit your console is?" or "you see. its only three ps2 stuck together", "its just a gimmick. it'll won't last", or "how hard can it be? it only has eight processors with state of the art coding!"

Yeah! not so hot now huh? now you know exactly how use wii owners feel like.

I hope you like the pain!

*lick the bitter tears from a weeping ps3 owner*

    oh yeah, sooo sweet....

*has to stop watching south park*

  • @slomo788:

If that were true, the Oldbox would have totally destroyed last-gen.

    It didn't, it's not.

    -

Having the best hardware does not guarantee success.

    -

Aside from the DVD dongle issue, what tech advantage did the PS2 offer over Xbox?

It even had a higher failure rate.

    -

The PS2 taught us that superior hardware is just a a nice bonus if you have the most desirable platform and cold comfort if you don't.
