After speaking to Konami USA marketing VP Anthony Crouts earlier this year at Comic Con, he gave us hope for a stateside release of the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Metal Gear Solid Collection, a package that stuffed six Metal Gear games and two bonus discs into a budget priced package. After hearing nothing about a release for the past three months, I bugged Kojima Productions producer Ryan Payton about the possibility of it shipping outside of Japan before Metal Gear Solid 4 hits. Our hopes? More measured, but Payton says it's still a possibility.
"We're working on it pretty much every day to make it happen," he said at the E For All Expo "but there are a lot of issues that the average gamer doesn't know about." So, who's to blame for the lack of box set love? Retailers? Maybe. Canada? Only partially. If you're going to blame anyone, blame your fellow tightwad gamers, who make convincing the Powers That Be difficult with their garage sale attitude toward video games.
Still, Payton has hope. "At some point next year, I want to have a box set on store shelves to give people a chance to play MGS1 and MGS2 before they jump into MGS4." But don't count on the box set coming out before the PlayStation 3 sequel and don't expect it to look like its Japanese counterpart. Payton talked briefly of his design document for the Western version of the package, one that's slightly different from the home turf release.
More details on the progress of Metal Gear Solid 4 and additional details on the Metal Gear Solid Collection coming in our full interview with the Kojima Productions producer.

Well I sure do hope this set comes here to the US. Now how long do I have to wait until I can read that interview?
I could wish for a PAL release, but I guess that would just be plain stupid of me.
I can only hope that this gets a US release. Despite already owning most of the games in there, I still want to have them all in a nice set. The bonus stuff, whatever it ends up being, is just a nice bit of added frosting to the delicious MGS cake.
...
Man I'm a consumer whore.
If it doesn't, I'll just buy the JP version as a collector's item from Play-Asia or NCSX.
Damn I just bought most of them separately on eBay this summer. The box set sure looks nice.
"Garage sale attitude" be damned. I have no qualms about spending money for a big huge MGS box set. Say what you will about them, but the MGS games have always given me lots of bang for the buck. I say go for it, Konami.
As long as you give us another Rumble Roses, of course. My longing for questionable, yet impossibly hot fetish wrestling action ranks right up there with my longing for giant MGS bundles. And no, I'm not ashamed to say it.
Question: Since newer PS3's lack the BC, who's going to buy this? PS2 owners?
It would have made more sense to make them PS3 disks, but I don't think they could have forseen the PS3 losing BC...
Throw in a metal gear toy with one of them tilting cow noise makers built in and I'm sold.
I'm going to wait for the Substance version of the box set.
The bundle doesn't need portable ops. The story in that game was almost completely self-contained. IMHO, I'd cut that out of the bundle and just give us MGS, MGS2 Substance, and MGS Subsistance. It's all we need. That's just four discs right there, surely they can do that?
@Digitalguardian:
Seeing as how Sony no longer manufactures PS1 discs? No they can't. In fact, that's pretty much the main reason why they can't do it. There's no manufacturing facilities for PS1 CDs any more.
would somebody ask kojima if he's gonna make Zone of The Enders 3.
@Indy_aka_Rex: Then cut out MGS. That just makes it cheaper.
If they released it for multiple consoles that would be cool.. you know like how Metal Gear started on the NES.. not to mention a certain someone in a certain Nintendo fighter.
And by that I mean Snake in Brawl.
And by that I mean.. this belongs on Wii.
@Scottendo:
Then again, now that I think about it.. they should just release Metal Gear 1+2 on the Virtual Console and we could just play Twin Snakes.. or they could repackage Twin Snakes with Solid 1-3 or something.
@Indy_aka_Rex:
If the disks can't be made then how did the PS1 game Metal Gear Solid get made for the Japanese set?
@Digitalguardian:
What do you think the point behind a METAL GEAR COLLECTION is exactly...?
@Kinburn:
Because... they still make discs in JAPAN for JAPAN?
Rumor time!
When's it come out for Xbox 360?
What would be the difference?
It would be nice if they included Twin snakes, Substance and Subsistence instead of the original games. VR Missions wouldn't go awry either. And I wouldn't actively object to the inclusion of Ghost Babel and the Acid games, though I can't say they strike me as must-haves. Rather have Portable Ops than those.
@Kinburn:
I don't know, how about cost?
@unless:
Twin Snakes was built with the GC in mind, so it's not an option. The cost to retroactively downgrade the game + remove all Nintendo references in the game doesn't make it an option for something that's essentially a collector's item and not intended to sell millions of units. And neither the Acid series or MG:GB are part of the main storyline.
@Indy_aka_Rex: @Indy_aka_Rex:
Dude, are you just being a dick for the sake of being a dick?
@Indy_aka_Rex: They don't manufacture them anymore, however there is a warehouse full of blank PS1 discs, not to mention that a plain CD will work on a PS1, the backs of the discs were only black because they wanted to distinguish them from normal CD's so it's not impossible. Either way, whats the point of putting these on PS1 discs? Anyone that would buy this more than likely owns the game on PS1, why would this not be a PS3 collection, ala the Orange Box? Whats the story here, the article is a little vague.
@unless: I disagree, The original is infinitely better than Twin Snakes. The other to are fine, becasue the new editions didn't screw up the originals the way Twin Snakes: Matrix Edition did.
@Digitalguardian:
The whole point of the box is to be a self-contained MG-Saga package. You're suggesting they REMOVE games to release it, that defeats the whole purpose of having a "20th Anniversary Collection". I may sound dickish, but c'mon... you can't tell me that's not a dumb thing to suggest (no offense).
No gamecube version of MGS1 = no fun.
is the Japanese version in just Japanese or is it in English as well? just a question. i assume that it's just in japanese.
looks cool though. i'd import it. i'm already getting a rumble sixaxis/DS3 anyway.
I've never actually played a metal gear solid game. In fact, I've only played Metal Gear on the NES. I think I'll buy one separate first. A giant box of them would be one hell of a letdown if I ended up hating it.
@Indy_aka_Rex: It's not a complete collection to begin with. I don't really see your problem here. According to you, they CAN'T release MGS.
@Digitalguardian:
How is it not a complete collection? It includes every MG release in the main storyline prior to MGS4.
@Indy_aka_Rex: That collection only goes back a decade. Even barring the NES games, it's also missing acid 1 & 2 and VR Missions. It's not a complete collection.
Im sure it will be released shortly before or after MGS4 and will sell at least one ps3. to me that is.
@Digitalguardian:
Neither Acid nor VR missions are part of the main series.
Correction: Acid isn't - VR missions SHOULD be part of the main series as it was part of Integral, but since it's just a collection of... well, VR Missions without a storyline, then there's no point in adding it.
@Indy_aka_Rex: What are you talking about? They don't need to be, but their absence means that it can't be a complete collection.
@Digitalguardian:
The set is a collection of the MAIN SERIES, not spin-offs.
@Digitalguardian:
@Indy_aka_Rex:
Alright guys, settle down. It's true that this collection is not a complete collection of ALL the MG/MGS games, however, this collection DOES include all the games that are considered part of the MGS canon, at least starting with MGS1. That is, unless they pack in MGS3 Substistence (as opposed to Snake Eater), which would include the original two Metal Gears. Ghost Babel and the MGAcid games, while they carry the MGS name and characters, are considered to be a sort of alternate universe, and, as far as MGS2 and MGS4 are concerned, never happened. Like it or not, they chose to limit this collection to canon-only, which makes it cheaper, but less 'complete' if you are a hardcore fan of the series. So shut up, you're both right.
@Indy_aka_Rex:
you did say it is complete because its the "20th anniversary!"
so if it only goes back 10 years...
When i first saw that picture I thought "Fuck!, MGS4 on the 360"
@brello: Nah, just get the set. The price can't be beaten, and I guarantee that you'll at least LIKE the games. Personally, it's my favorites series, and I rarely meet anyone who actually would rather not play them.
See that last disc there?
The one that says "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake"?
Yeah, it's complete in terms of storyline.
From left to Right:
Metal Gear Solid Disc 1
Metal Gear Solid Disc 2
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (with refinements from Substance)
The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (with refinements from Subsistance)
Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
So by the time this comes out, no available PS3 will be able to play it...
I know PS2s are cheap but damn what a stupid move by Sony!
@kNZA: what are you talking about? the 80,20 and 60 still play ps2 games.
@DELETED:
He said "by the time this comes out". Right now, the 20gb's are basically extinct, the 60gb is only available till they are sold out, and who knows if the 80gb isn't the next on the chopping block, to be replaced with a 120gb w/o BC to "encourage" people to buy more PS3 games.
@Digitalguardian: agreed, id love such a set.
@Scottendo: no. controls = all wrong.
@brello: you wont, please believe.
@kNZA: christ, i hate you for being write about that here, didnt even think about it. ugh.
@TheIrishNinja: "write" = "right", sorry folks.
I never got in to the MG franchise, but with Snake in Brawl, and MGS4 coming out, I might have to, and I refuse to enter it unless this package is sold in the US :D
Naah, Dont release it stateside - then my Japanese version wont look as good.
Im joking of cause - An american release would mean that the new Metal Gear Saga DVD would be in English, and that'd be great
@Scottendo: Seems like wishful thinking, but I'd buy ports of MGS2 + 3 for Wii. I played MGS on the PC, but never bothered with 2 cause I heard the PC version was ass.
Twin Snakes doesn't need a port, they could package the GC disc with a boxset, it'd still play.
I don't know what the set's going to look like and contain when/if it comes out, but I'll probably end up buying it. I'm not generally a fanboy about much, but I'm rabidly devoted to this series.
@DELETED: lol same here actually...
Platform?!
@micster: wait, ive got a copy of the Metal Gear Saga in english as a promo for Subsistence, are we talking about the same DVD? short history, trailer for 4?
@TheIrishNinja: The boxset came with a newer version of saga - Actually, Ive not watched it yet but im sure its on youtube...
This needs to be on Xbox 360 and the Wii in the US to tell Sony that they MIGHT leave. Could be on three disks even...
Disk 1: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, and Metal Gear Solid
Disk 2: Metal Gear Solid 2
Disk 3: Metal Gear Solid 3
