Rumor: Beautiful Katamari Rolls On To Consoles This Fall

princey.JPG

Website Orange Lounge Radio has a pretty good track record with reporting rumors that usually turn out to be right on target. Their newest addition to the rumor mill is that Namco has announced to retailers that a new Katamari game, entitled Beautiful Katamari, will be arriving on all three next gen consoles this fall. They even go so far as to list release dates and prices. According to their source, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will hit on October 17th at $39.99 followed swiftly by the Wii version on November 14th for a slightly cheaper $29.99. Their source is listed as a "someone who works in video game distribution" and if you doubt their word, they have put together a little FAQ explaining exactly why you should believe them, including this post on Xboxic which seems to corroborate the story.

Once again, rumor is rumor, but this is one I'm crossing my fingers turns out to be true.

  • I thought the creator of Katamari Damacy wasn't enthusiastic about making any more games in the series, nor was he excited about the Wii in general...?

Nevertheless, I'd like this rumor to be true as well, so hopefully he either had a change in heart or Namco used their checkbook to persuade him into it.

  • Even if the creator doesn't want more Katamari, it won't stop Namco from pumping out more.

But the prices of the games makes me kinda think this might be some kind of compilation of Katamari games instead of all new ones.

  • its nice that there may be katamari on other platforms but we don't need more sequels in the gaming world, i'd rather have 1 more original and unique title than 2 more katamari sequels (and i love katamari)

Katamari on the Wii would be comedy gold. Imagine if they put in a 4 player multiplayer mode too.

  • Yet another exclusive lost by the ps3.

I'm actually excited about the wii version. Since the main problem with katamari was its horrible ass backwards controls.

  • A Wii Version and a cheaper price tag (rumor, I know..I know). Count this Goomba in ^_^

@Marasai: Dude Katamaris controls were perfectly fine. I couldnt imagine a better way to do it.

Now if you were talking about the PSP version, I can understand your gripe, since using both the directional and buttons together instead of both analog sticks did feel a bit wrong.

The controls reminded me of an old overhead view tank shooter game, that used 2 sticks with the similar control scheme katamari used.

  • A Wii version of Katamari!? Cheaper price tag!? Count me in!

  • Yeah, the katamari worked like driving a tank and it made sense. I think it could work well for Wii but I'm trying to wrap my head around how they'd do it.

  • Please be true...

Even without the creator on-board, they can take the old formula and run with it. All that needs doing is new levels and rules, and updating the graphics and physics to go with current gen technology.

Anyone get the feeling this might actually be a remaking of the first 2 katamari's? First its cheaper... and "Beautiful"? Dunno, just has a remake vibe to it. As for 360 love... Even Namco sees the light!

@AcerBandit: With the Wii Im guessing they might do it with tilting both the remote and nunchuk maybe?

    Good question though.

I cant wait to run over more cousins in the game. It was awesome how they would try to run from you once you found them.

  • As much as I love the hell out of the Katamari games, I really hope they don't completely ruin the series by running it into the ground like certain other game franchises that should have died in the 90s.

I would rather a game series die after a few games and maintain some respect rather than whoring it out until everyone hates it. COUGHsonicCOUGH

  • even if this turns out to be true, considering the cheaper price tag for the wii I'm pretty sure there won't be any wii enhanced controls.

  • @Witzbold: Yeah, I thought about that but I wasn't sure if the nunchuk had tilting in it or just accelerometers. I think they are using the nunchuk's tilting and x/y/z axis in Metroid Prime 3 for opening up doors so I guess it does have them. Basically it's the Wii controller functionally but without the pointer, memory, and obvious face buttons. I think you could do katamari using the Wii controller and nunchuk then. It would probably be tricky to figure out how to find a center point though with each device, but if they can do it then it would be pretty neat. =)

  • Just make the controls on the Wii like in Kororinpa or in Super Monkey Ball, and change the levels a bit to accomodate it. That would rule. Marble Madness with a growing ball full of crap :-D

  • I'm thinking that the wii controls are going to work really well with katamari. It'd obviously use the nunchuck and remote, in a very similar setup to that of the originals.

I see it working quite nicely, the price tag is up there for all three versions, if the content is on par with the PS2 games that is.

  • "But the prices of the games makes me kinda think this might be some kind of compilation of Katamari games instead of all new ones."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't these games always cheaper? I coulda sworn I picked up the first Katamari on ps2 for $20-30 new, when games were retailing for $50.

  • For all the people talking about the price indicating it might not be an actual new Katamari game, you guys do remember that both console Katamari games sold for cheaper than normal prices, right? The PS3 and 360 versions will be the most expensive a Katamari game will sell for, providing that this isn't a rumor.

  • I've always said I'd buy a PS3 once either a new Katamari game or a new, REAL GT game came out on it. Great. Now I needa buy a fucken PS3.

Mind, I COULD just get a Wii and save 500$... but then there'd be no GT... DAMN!

  • @PlayerX:

One of us, one of us...

It's not as bad of system as everyone makes it out to be, guy. You'll find enjoyment in it.

Just be prepared to have a lot of downloads first. It's like getting a new computer: Lots of Windows updates need to be done out of the box.

  • ugh, please, I love Katamari Damacy, but leave the series alone. It's not going to unique and fun like the original, probably just a few new songs and levels like the ps2 sequel.

  • I can image tilt controls on the PS3 and Wii version being pretty cool, tilting the controller about exite-truck style

    hope this is true

  • Although a lot of people refer to Katamari Damacy's controls as "tank controls," I think they are more accurately described as pushing a shopping cart. You drive the Katamari just as you would navigate the aisles of a supermarket with a cart. Push with both hands to move forward. Push with one hand and pull with the other to turn, and so on. As such, I think holding the Wiimote sideways, as in ExciteTruck, could very well replicate everything you need to do in a Katamari game. :)

I didn't like We Love Katamari as much as the first one. There was something more clear and simple about the first game. The second was muddled with trying to appease people and meet odd little objectives.

  • I dunno about you, but I thought the second Katamari game was great. Honestly, the game is so simple and fun I can't see how more of it could be a bad thing. More Katamari Damacy please!

  • If this is true, I will die from utter joy. Seriously, Katamari is awesome. You can't go wrong from rolling things up and picking everything an anything.

  • I am a huge Katamari fan and I welcome all the sequels I can get. I think it is so funny that so many people claim to be fans but never want a sequel. Personally, I have been thinking of tons of great ideas for new Katamari games, and even though I will only be able to pick up the Wii version at first, the PS360 version should feature some great material. I hope that the Wii version is wholly different rather than being a watered down port.

And yes, the first Katamari was released at $20 and the second was released at either $30 or $40, so they have always been budget price. And as always, just as I am not forced to buy the latest SimCity (Spore) you are also not forced to buy the latest Katamari game.

  • Awww, I hope the Wii version comes out on my birthday like the rest of them. :(

  • @AcerBandit:
The tilting control is done with the accelerometers (by measuring the acceleration of gravity), there's no separate mechanism.

  • Image of DaveKap DaveKap at 04:35 PM on 03/17/07 *

I love Katamari Damacy but the only thing that will make me consider these sequels any better than the originals is if they include a "Create your world" mode where you can pick and choose out of all the items and drop them into the world. I seriously question any game developer that doesn't see this as a killer-app.

  • @DaveKap: Dude that would be awesome, and people could post the worlds online. That would be great. I'd also be all about expansions since the actual concept to Katamari remains the same.

I don't know about you guys, but I still have room for a few more Katamari Sequels. Maybe if they were a little more in depth and the games come out more than a year apart.

For me Katamari has been played out since that horrible PSP iteration. Katamari 1 and 2 were a breath a fresh air and very fun, of course, but I just don't see people spending an extra $10 on each "new" game just for some new dialog from that wacky King of All Cosmos on top of the same game they already played.

  • @itcomesinwaves: Thanks! So I'm guessing that the nunchuk and the Wii controller pretty much have the same accelerometer setup for tilt control? =)

  • Wii and XB360

I'll definitely be ordering up both for a Wii60 combo...

I do hope the Wii version controls in such a way that it uses the wiimote both hands, rather than one handed. I'm a little wary about spending fiddy dolla on Monkey Ball for that reason.

  • WAAAAAAAIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!

    Katamari + SIXAXIS = moe~

here's my $ namco. you've done it again old chap.

  • I so hope this is true! I never bought a PS2/PSP so I have never been able to play the game in full. I am definetly buying the Wii version because Katamari Damacy is made for the Wii

  • I hope it's a compilation rather than a new game.

Katamari suffers from the same problem as a lot of PS2 era games: it looks like crap on a new TV. PS1, N64 and older games look great under emulation, but at the moment there's no way to get PS2 games to look decent. I want a Wii Okami for the same reason.

  • Wonder why the Wii version would be cheaper?

I played the demo of We Love Katamari on some OPM disc. Wanted to like it, but it kind of bored me. I'd like to give it another chance, though.

  • I'm with 17-A. I thought that Katamari's creator hated the Wii, just like that monkey from Maxis?

  • That will be sooooooooooo awsome for the Wii :)

  • Please, please, please.... and some more please... let this be true. Then I can finally get rid of my PSP and play this on Wii!
