Rockstar Shows Off GTA IV Special Edition

Rockstar Games just sent over pics of the Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition, the $90 premium package the developer announced in May. Shots of the duffel bag, key chain, art book and security lock box are all in our gallery, only making me want this pricey package that much more. Hey, I've never been "good with money."

  • I want!

  • Interesting that they showed the PS3 version only.

  • Do want indeed. Usually when I get the collector's edition I'm done with the extra stuff within moments. But I'd use the duffel bag, you know if it doesn't say GTA4 all over it in huge letters.

  • That safe deposit box will come in handy while trying to hide your copy of GTAIV from thost bastards at the ESRB.

90 bucks.. something to put 90 bucks in. 90 bucks... something to put 90 bucks in,

    Gah crap!

  • ROFL Grimspoon.
The special edition looks sexy. I may get it but $90... arghh

  • Damn that's a cool looking duffel bag. Rockstar did a good job with adding in something cool for the collector's edition.

  • damn, I wasnt going to buy the special edition, but its calling me.

  • Duffel bag? Anyways I really don't see anything special about this package, the only item of interest would be the art book and of course, the game itself - but 90$? Fuck that, I say.

  • @Huginn:

Fair warning, that safe deposit box looks like a novelty, and not built to the standards of a real safe deposit box that a bank would use. However, This is just a guess on my part. I work in a tool shop, and judging by the thickness of that metal, I'm pretty confident I could "compromise the security" of that box bare handed, and steal your 90 bucks.

I personally wouldn't keep my money in it.

  • Count me in. Not only for the cool extras but because Rockstar needs the "support".

  • That's one damn nifty looking Special Edition. Hell of a lot better than... well really any Limited or Special Edition I've owned. I dare say, I think it looks better than the Legendary Edition of Halo 3.

  • A duffel bag and security box that's certainly a new one O.o;
Im not sure how special I consider a black security box and black duffel bag though. Maybe there is some special feature to them though.

  • I wonder how many games you could fit in the box. Might be a good organiser.

  • @whitehawk: Scroll through the gallery for the Xbox360 one [kotaku.com]

  • That <Al Gore> lock box </Al Gore> would actually be a pretty sweet case to cart around a DS or PSP to gaming parties. Sure it'd be big and unweildy, but you could make a big show of unlocking it, removing a few passports before pulling out your handheld. Plus you could crack it over the head of any naysayers.

Wait, did I say "sweet"? I meant "totally and unforgiveably nerdy." Ah crap, I think my girlfriend just left me.

  • no thanks, game only for me.

  • you know when i first heard about this i thought i would never wnat something so stupid, but i actually was gonna buy a safety box, because i need one, but i still am not sold. i dont feel like a GTA4 safety box is gonna give the "safety" i really need when putting my money in it at work. i deliver for a chinese restaurant and its annoying when i have over $100 in my wallet goin through bad parts of town. but i dont just wanna leave it laying around the restaurant. probably better off buying a real safelty deposit box haha.

and is that the final cover art? if so ... sad.

  • @iChopSticks: No offense to the 360 version, which has the DLC, but the PS3 box looks so much better then the 360 box sitting with that set. I think it's that lime green that throws off the visual pleasure.

  • @whitehawk: 360 version is right here: [files.gtanet.com]

I imagine the PS3 version was chosen here because the box the set much better than the 360's green box. I hope that's not final box art, though. It's kind of bland.

  • i used to think that japanese gamers were lucky for getting all sorts of goodies and collector's editions. now that we get them, i have to say they are just plain unnecessary crap.

the art of (insert game here)
this is no longer of interest. back in the nes days when big-headed fighters and mages barely approximated amano's masterfully crafted works, this was interesting. now, the game itself surpasses the conceptual art half the time.

    safety deposit box
um, sure, thanks. -shrug with open hands-

    duffel bag
i already have one, no wait, four.

    soundtrack
the soundtrack is probably a decent collection of songs. this is the best of the bunch, but it hardly has any competition. seeing as how gta uses the sort of music that people actually listen to, it'll probably get more airtime than my grandia 2 soundtrack (packaged with the standard edition back when we didn't have special editions). this is the sort of thing that you wouldn't want to pay for at the outset though. you don't know if you like the music until you've played the game, so paying extra for it before playing makes no sense to me.

i'd trade all those "goodies" in for some free dlc.

oh, btw, this is still way better than the spartan helemt.

    standard editions 4 life!

  • God is it tempting, but too many games are coming out this fall/winter for me to spend the extra cash.

Oh, and you people need to learn the difference between a safe and a safe deposit box. A safe deposit box is kept in a vault to hold valuables. The security is there because of the vault, not necessarily because of the box itself.

  • @keyrat: Let's toss on a nifty Resevoir Dogs style pop art Black and White graphic with Nico and the wind swept tie. A little napkin with a IV on it in his coat pocket and a silenced 9mm. Behind him, possibly a stylized image of a typical New York street with Grand Theft Auto tagged on a wall.

Sure, not original, but it'd be fun to look at for a little while. XD

  • i love how the "collectors" edition has finally become something of value. it used to be just an extra dvd or artwork, but now you have all these goodies coming with the game

  • @whitehawk:
Here's the XBox 360 one, barely any differences...

  • That looks like the first special-spiffy edition I would ever want, too bad I don't want GTAIV.

  • @Grimspoon: That error is so common that both are accepted spellings/pronunciations.

  • Anyone know why Amazon has every version of this game available for preorder EXCEPT the 360's "Special Edition"? Is it already 'sold out' (for the moment)? I've seen it at Gamestop's site, but I'd really like to preorder it with Amazon, as I've got Prime and there's no tax.

This is one of the SEs/CEs that I'm willing to pay extra for, even without any sort of "cat helmet".

  • 90 bucks...for this?! NO THANK YOU.

  • Here in Australia we have to pay $120 for new 360 and PS3 games, which is about $100 US for standard edition games.

Stop bitching. It's a sweet deal.

Fair warning, that safe deposit box looks like a novelty, and not built to the standards of a real safe deposit box that a bank would use.

It's possible, but based on experience I would give Rockstar the benefit of the doubt. Their promotional items are always the real deal, from their Vice City Rubik's Cubes (who knew that company even still existed?) to their Manhunt hospital bracelets and blackjacks.

True, those are made in potentially smaller quantities than the items in this special edition, and they're not sold but given away, so they may be trying to save some money with this package. But their quality standards for things like this are usually pretty high.

  • I think the appeal of this is lost on me. A duffle bag? It's a common item you can pickup anywhere. And a lock box that I suspect is more novelty than useful.

Would much rather have a t-shirt that says GTIV or maybe a coffee mug

  • Sweet looking set. I wish it was just $10 more than the standard, though. And yeah, the 360 green box is hideous.

  • Art book? Just what I've always wanted, to look at some 'art' of a dingy, run-down urban setting.

  • Was dissapointed to see the collectors was going to be $90, but I'm quiet impressed with this. It's worth $90 IMO. While there is still the big question as whether you want to spend $90 on this, atleast they tossed in enough goodies to make it worth while if your a fan.

  • i'm going to skip this and give the $90 to charity

i do it all for the kiudz

  • Game: $59.99
    Art book: $19.99
    Soundtrack: $14.99
    Duffel Bag: $14.99
    Cheap security box: $19.99

    Total: $129.95

    GTA IV Special Edition: $89.99

I fail to see how this is overpriced. Seems like a deal to me.

  • I'll keep the key chain.

  • I really have no clue why anyone would want the art book. There's plenty of photos and artwork based on NYC.

  • The safe deposit box looks by no means indestructable, but it still looks like it is on par with the usual box that you would get for keeping small amounts of money in like the money you get from a yard sale that you want to be able to easily transport while having at least some deterent to keep people from stealing it.

  • FUCK!!!

    That's probably $99 Canadian.

    FUCK!!!!

    I'm still buying it

  • @ceilingFANBOY: I'm thinking they will just take the whole box. That box screams "Steal me and my contents please!"

  • It is very slick and I like the idea but I think I will spend my money elsewhere. I will get the standard edition and maybe get a rockstar t shirt or hoodie.

  • Now thats a collector's edition done right. Finally something more than just a sticker that says: "Collectors Edition" on the top and an extra DVD you never actually watch.

  • Well it's certainly an unusual CE but personally, I think the Bioshock Collector's Edition is better.

  • cant wait to add that to my collection.

  • This duffel bag, how many heads are inside?

  • 90 bucks for a bunch of garbage that has GTA written on it? Come on, this is completely ridiculous! The only truly 'special' thing here is the art book, and who's really going to look at it much after the first time?

I'm so sick of all these games that are going to have super deluxe limited special edition bundles for incredibly high prices. Paying $60 is enough already! Halo 3 is pulling this crap to, totally taking advantage of gamers. All that matters in the end is the disc with the game on it. Who the hell buys this stuff? They must have giant chests filled to the brim with 'limited edition' garbage

  • The sad thing is, this will probably retail at over £60 in the UK. With a starting price point of £40 anyway, to compare to US prices it would have to add at least £20 to the price.

That's $120 equivalent US. Now complain about overpriced rubbish :P

  • Got to agree - stop bitching about the price - $30 for all that extra stuff seems cheap. If you want to bitch about anything bitch about Halo 3 Legendary - for once you could end up paying more in the Us than we do in the UK. RRP is £69.99 over here but you're a mug if you pay RRP. Fat profit margins for the shops as well as tax are built into the price over here so there are always discounts available - should be able to pick it up for about $100-120.

  • The actual game box is meh. I don't want to get box art wich simply consists of the gta IV logo i've been seeing ever since they announced the game. I've always liked GTA box arts, so normal edition for me.

  • @elevenoverzero: @Lu-Tze:

The ps3 is region free remember, there is an online import store here in australia that sells new games at US release dates for US prices.

Something to consider, especially if it gets banned/modified.
