The untitled next generation Need for Speed game is no longer untitled! Now we have a name, and that gives us power over it. Shipping this fall to every gaming device you can possibly imagine, it's now Need for Speed ProStreet, a subtitle that would be extremely generic if not for the lack of spacing and awesome middle capital S. This isn't just any, Amateur Street, no sir.
Okay, the name kinda bites.
But the game is looking spectacular, judging by screen above and the teaser we posted last week. This new iteration is all about realistic graphics and damage modeling, meaning I might finally get my wish to have my crushed Nissan Sentra in a video game. As for the gameplay focus this time around...
"Need for Speed ProStreet accelerates street racing culture by providing the ultimate stage for the pursuit of street racing supremacy," said Executive Producer, Larry LaPierre. "This is a game about building the ultimate performance-tuned battle machine, taking it to multi-disciplinary showdowns all over the world and pitting your skills and reputation against the very best street racers."
So pretty much what we've been doing, but damn it looks pretty. Hit the jump for more details!

Nice!
real damage in a racing game. hope there'll still be cops! though i think that's wishful thinking.
But will it have teh jaggies!!!11
Just kidding, I heart FORZA until this comes out.
It looks lovely, but as it's yet another NFS, and EA, there's a limit to how excited I can get.
More street racing? Best leave that to Midnight Club and move on.
If they could bring this series back to the great times of the original Hot Pursuit on PSone, then maybe I'd consider giving it a chance. At least it's appealing to the eyes.
Forget your Sentra, 91 accords are all the rage now
Ugh, what is with these themed racing games? They need to go back to NFS 2 and see what made it so good, and improve upon that formula with car damage, better physics, graphics etc. But keep the variety of courses/scenery etc.
Street racing culture games suck. If I wanted to race around a city, I'd get in my minivan and do just that.
I personally think that the NFS franchise has done better with the street racing genre than Midnight Club... I haven't been a fan since the second one, honestly...
But, then again, I haven't been a fan of the street racing genre since Underground 2. Most Wanted was disappointing (except for the pursuits), and I skipped Carbon altogether.
"street racing"... pass. I'll give the series a chance again if they ever get back to the style of the pre-Underground games.
Yuck...all these racing games are the same.
I remember playing the orginal Need for Speed back on my 3DO...that was a good game. The game was all about driving exotic, expensive cars in some nice settings. It was simple and it was fun.
The game was a great racer and they have since ruined the franchise. There is little hope for the series in my eyes.
NFS... bleh, I want the new Midnight Club!!!
The Hot Pursuit games are my favorite out of the NFS series. I do not like the street racing part of it at all. Choosing exotic cars and zipping along beach side roads and jumping ramps on the secret dirt roads and piers you found was way better. Maybe they'll make a HP3 one day :(
does that mean we'll be seeing licensed streetracers? Kinda like how EA did for their street game?
mmm promoting an illegally, and sometimes fatal 'sport' Me smells a lawsuit :P
@Fuzz:
Minivan!
LOL
So as opposed to all of the other NFS games involving the street racing culture, this one will take place in different parts of the world as opposed to just one fictional city. Hmm...
The concept has me slightly interested, but I'll reserve judgment until I see some gameplay footage.
I would still rather have another Hot Pursuit, anyway.
EA just got announced Need For Speed ProStreet is coming to Tandy TRS 80.
Enough with the "street" already. I want real tracks, real race cars.
... or maybe I just want Forza, DiRT and Grand Tourismo?
Geeez! Another NFS, wow that is so unexpected. 3 in a year and a half.
Too bad that trailer was pre-rendered CG. The lighting, smoke and particle effects were far beyond what any of the consoles are capable of. Nice try EA....
grrrr....I wouldn't expect EA to deviate from the formula that's been so successful in the past, but dammit, can they at least change it the slightest bit? Like what is different here? Damage? Cities in other countries? Please....nfs 3 and 4 offered so much more in terms of actual gameplay. Most Wanted was 'alright', but I'd take decent track variety over an open city anyday...You'd think at least 1 game in 5 could be more than just a cash-in on urban/street culture.
Hot pursuit again plz.
i am not even the slightest bit interesting.
A racing game with better graphics! holy crap, how do they come up with ground breaking idea like this....
no, really who cares?
Crash, fly into a thousand pieces that's neat but not enough to make me look twice.
Meanwhile, across the Kotaku schoolyard:
Lil' NFS:PS (crying his eyes out): NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY WIF ME!
Clearly EA has their spies following me around... I was just joking about a Need for Speed: Street the other day. But come on, I didn't expect to be taken seriously. This is the last stop before Medal of Honor: Street on the road to oblivious self-parody.
FINALLY! I been wanting real time damage since NFS:High Stakes! -.-
"Pro Street" seems to be the ricer tag-phrase. Check out teh googles.
Ok so will this game have a widescreen mode for the PC?
I mean whats up with that? The 360 versions of mostwanted and Carbon were widescreen but not the PC.
Any one else feel the experience gets ruined while playing a 4:3 game on a widescreen monitor?
As long as it's at least as good as Most Wanted, and better than Carbon, I'm sold.
I didn't read many other comments, but if anyone even mentions Burnout in this topic, you can schedule yourself for a punch in the face.
@Fuzz:
Heheh, Need For Speed: ProMinivans!
The worst part is, I'd actually pay for that.
I hope you dont shift through 16 gears and race a "1/4 mile" for 20 minutes like that movie "Crap and the Furious"!
I think EA ran out of ideas and the franchise needs to be put to rest. What is this? Its basiccly Carbon with better graphics but they shoe horned in Burnout's crash coding/physics and call it a whole new game.
Fuck you EA, fuck you.
@poematik14:
*scratches head*
You can do that with almost any game franchise! Comparatively speaking.
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage
real physics this time? Ever 'since NFSU:2 it's been downhill and shitty....
@SliceWarriorX:
That's not true. Most Wanted was great.
But Carbon sucked.
