If you are like me, when you start up an isometric 'health potions are red, mana are blue' action RPG, you go for a crafty rogue or a bulky fighter, leaving the delicate mage characters to those of a more masochistic nature. Clockstone's Avencast: Rise of the Mage isn't giving you that choice. You're playing the mage, like it or not. Luckily for you and me the mage looks to be one of the badder-ass examples of the species. With over 50 different combat moves and magic spells, Avencast could rise above the silly, generic name to become a force to be reckoned with in the PC action RPG genre. That, or it'll make a nice addition to the $9.99 bin at GameStop. The power is in our hands!
isometric 'health potions are red, mana are blue' action RPG
Perfect description!
The game looks... generic. Maybe so many spells can make it interesting, but it definitely falls in the "I'll watch my brother's friends playing it on his powerful PC while I do something else" category.
sounds like an interesting idea... but, i will say...
the trailer kinda reminded me why i don't play as a mage: because my attacks make it so i can't tell what the hell is going on... and everything that touches me kicks my ass.
@CheekMystique: If you look closer, the skeletons (or whatever they are) were blocking with shields. If the player was smart, (s)he would've froze then spammed an attack spell.
The graphics look dated compared to what will be coming out later this year/next.
I don't think it's the graphics so much as the style. Your POV is one that doesn't lend itself to the cinematics you might get with a GoW(interestingly, either interpretation of that acronym is appropriate).
Just like when Warcraft3 came out it seemed a bit subpar graphically, but if you moved your camera down it looked more along the lines of what you would expect. But then the game was damn near impossible to play.
ok before you all get banned Bashcraft or Crecente (cant remember which theyre both Brian) did say before that there was to be no external linkin in the comments section. Sure I dont work here but linking YouTube about a post that after the very brief discussion about why the post got deleted isnt smart. Lets let it all go and if people wanna read it they can use a search engine or sumthin.
regardless a Mage-centric RPG would be spiffingly fresh, but only if it were a Red-Mage as such a bit of a balance of mystic and physical arts.
i for one am grateful i got to see that after kotaku self-censored for whatever reason. so instead of showing what a sycophant you are by reeling off rules that are plainly bollocks (no external links in comments? thats kinda contravenes the entire point of a blog), how about you just... dont?
I didn't mean to jack this post by any means but if a ban hammer has to come down on me, then so be it. Sorry for doing so...and just for the record, Avencast looks cool but my GF will probably like it more than me
Hate to hi-jack these comments on kotaku commentary policy but i randomly felt like posting about some mage rpg game for a moment
- is it just me that thinks that spells that look that cool should be alot more powerful? He was hitting some of the mobs there with big firey explosions, purple things from the sky, rapid fire icy shard stuff that froze them and they still didn't flinch.
@Spindaden:
thanks for the reminder about the actual topic lol
you know what would be a good stat raising method. you can only get stronger by learning new spells but to do that you need to read lots of books, actually read the lore etc.
Heh, traditionally I've always picked a mage as my character of choice. Especially if mage can teleport. It's just plain awesome to have a bunch of spell casters teleporting around while flinging spells at each other. Maybe this game will allow something like that? The graphics don't look all that great though.
Also I thought that the player in this game rather sucked. Kept rolling right into the traps and getting hit despite having activated the trap before. I dunno how you aim the spells, but his accuracy rate was rather abysmal. I saw numerous opportunities for the use of that raining purple aoe spell that weren't taken, or completely fumbled...
I don't quite follow your logic, Mike. Letting a bunch of goblins whale on you with clubs at close range seems just a tad more masochistic than standing back and chucking fireballs at them.
The fast pace and SHMUP style bullet dodging got me curious, so I did some quick research on the game. From what I've read, the devs are trying to make the combat more dynamic and reliant on player skill, rather than phat lewt and statistics.
Apparently the combat is inspired by games like Final Fight and Street Fighter. In fact, some of the spells are cast by performing motions similar to those you would need to execute a hadouken in Street Fighter.
Personally I am sick of the stale combat mechanics of most RPGs, so this game has certainly piqued my interest.
Every single time I see one of these videos, I always think the same thing: "You suck at this, give me the controller/get up and let me show you how its done."
I mean come on! The guy stopped in the middle of being attacked to loot a corpse, He can't aim for crap, and he kept setting of the same traps over and over! That could mean three things. 1: The controls are not precise, 2: they didn't bother trying to find someone who is actually any GOOD at the game they made, or 3: They didn't practice before they started. My guess is 3, because he seems to get better as he goes on.
Game looks interesting... however, graphics are a bit dated, and there doesn't seem much variation with the spells, besides them being not very effective. Hope they improve a bit before release.
Besides that, who cares about Olivia Munn when there are so much better looking girls like this one.

WOO! Reference!
I'm attacking the darkness.
Seems cool! Let's see what happens next...
Yeah, Diablo was a fun game....
Not bad.
The graphics look dated compared to what will be coming out later this year/next.
That looks pretty nice. Seems to have faster gameplay then most of its counterparts
Love the overview look. Kinda sick of the mmo behind the back view of things nowadays.
interesting enough but...
what happened to the Olivia Munn entry?!?!?
@mikeloxlong: You are right, what did happen to that post?

@mikeloxlong and @yashichi8bit: They deleted it. Happens from time to time around here.
How generic.
@Alalu: it was for the greater good, also good to bring out the flamebots that post here and ban them :)
Sounds like my kind of game
Sorry Fahey, warriors are good and all, but when it really comes down to it there's just no substitute for a good caster
Shiny. Looks great.
@shaunomacx: Yup, it was kind of distasteful and I think I read quite enough sexist comments for today on the Ubisoft's Imagine games post.

That's not an isometric view. \nitpick
Me = of 2 minds. A gussied up Diablo clone is seldom a really bad thing. Titan Quest was pretty coo, etc.
But for all his spells, our hero didn't do much damage, did he? 30 attacks on any random crawlie must be sadness after a while.
And the dark (Dark I say!) dungeons, obtuse UI, somewhat problematic camera and sort of dated looks... Let's say "Room for improvement!"
Cautiously optimistic?
@CheekMystique: Agreed on all your points.

@Captain_Tsunami: Shields, Cheeky buggers! (Or as you say: none-too-skilled player - and I almost mark the shields on 2nd viewing in the dark.)
Makes sense though, a mage can't cast that weak a spell... And think of all that mana wasted. The mind reels!
@CheekMystique: Ahh, but the mana also slowly regenerates

Eh... I'll wait for the Fighter expansion.

This game came out 7 years ago, except back then it was called Nox, and it wasn't full 3d.
It wasn't very good then, so I doubt it'll be good now.
@aestheticity:
in the past i did my fair amount of trolling mate so ill be blunt about this
The content of the deleted post was deleted for a reason, why mention it again. Respect the editors is what im saying.
external linking YouTube about a story which was REMOVED from Kotaku is just plain balls!
it sucks that the post has now been replaced by a tribute to an animated pair of boobs rather than a hot dog eating Olivia...
...and the no external links in comments? What is this, communist Kotaku?
I'll link just for the sake of linking to their own rules...

@Bashcraft
while its not the exact same context please refer to the link above for clarification on the linking rulings
"I don't want to make posting links to other sites an instant ban, but I will. :("
Its a case of if you want to bring attention to a news item send it to Tips and a member of staff who works for Kotaku will then report it.
In the way they have respect for us as readers, we need to show some respect for them and not spam up the place.

For some reason, a mage with the ability to roll bugs me. Maybe it's because he's weraing a robe. He's not dressed for some hardcore asswhipping!

Hey, I like Nox, so this looks pretty great to me!
That looked awesome! I've got to get my hands on a copy, if anything just to make my convalescing week go faster.
[Now if only I can convince that stupid witch to sell me another book of Chain Lightning.]
Looks hard.
Take it from someone who always picks the Mage first: This reminds me a little too much of "Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom."
not a good sign...

@mikeloxlong: Er, hmm, Thanx. I meant to focus on the fact it was gone. Funny though, I felt it didnt belong here too.
