A new report from research firm Frank N. Magid Associates reveals that Xbox 360 are not only largely unaware of the console's high definition graphics capabilities, but that nearly a third of owners are unfamiliar with the Xbox Live Arcade service. The report, based on responses from 1800 households (however, only 149 of which actually own an Xbox 360), reveals that while a large number of users have purchased or tried an XBLA title, a surprising number of them are clueless about how they can get UNO, Double Dragon or Pac-Man Championship Edition on their chill white Xboxes.
One can only assume that this "awareness gap" is due to the large number of dedicated Viva Pinata machines.

So 1/3 of the Xbox owners have the intelligence of a small cat? Impossible!
@DigitalHero:
That's why Microsoft is banking heavily on the Halo 3 cat helmet.
Well, you have to factor in that not everybody has high-speed internet. If you're not hooked up to live, I don't expect you to know much about the arcade.
I, on the other hand, don't live in the middle of nowhere, and as such do not have that problem.
By the way Micheal nice rounding you're doing there. Might as well say half.
The real question is: How many of the 1800 households have an unaccounted live-in-Ninja that purchased games using XBLA...?
-Niric
Never used I could understand but never even heard of...
So what you're saying is that out of 1800 people, only 149 people owned the 360, and then they asked them about the 360.
So...the results are significant how?
@okenny_unbanned:
Ah ha! No wonder!
Your theory may be right, since I think Viva Pinata sold 30% of 149 copies.
@okenny_unbanned: Headline margin of error +/-3%.
@okenny_unbanned:
HALO 3 CAT HELMET?
Holy crap, my cats are going to kill me in my sleep.
@justhesh:
To reiterate, why does the title suggest that only 1/3 of all 360 owners know about the features of the 360, when in reality it's only 1/3 of 149 people?
that's a fucking shame, i think that's one of the systems strengths. Arcade's got a great lineup that if MS wants to snatch some of the "casual" market at their lower price point, they should really put it out there - its got a more interesting lineup (to me) than PSN or VC both.
Next study:
25% of Wii Owners Unaware That the Wii Plays Games Other than Wii Sports
Viva Pinata was too hard for me. Seriously, I am 24 years old and I could not micromanage all of those damn pinatas.
huwhat?!
More than 30% of them must not even know wtf xbox live is too then.
@Foggynotion:
Yeah, it's no wonder it didn't do very well. It was clearly marketed as kids stuff and was really anything but.
well not as bad as the 80% unaware of the PS3's BD functionality
Not surprised. Being able to download games on a console is pretty new. It usually takes new trends a few years to catch on. And having a broadband wired into the living room (where I'm guessing many 360s end up) probably isn't very common.
I'm really surprised by this, but I really shouldn't be. Whether regarding video games or anything else, most people are f'ing retards.
This article should really read "66% of clueless parents unaware of what that really expensive thing they bought their kids actually does"
1/3 of Xbox 360 owners unaware that they own XBOX 360
that's really hard to believe... gamers are geeks, and as such we love our electronic devices and especially our game consoles. We explore every facet of them and get great joy our of tinkering with all the settings. So how is it that 1/3 doesn't know what XBLA is?
@StartingAces:
That has to be it. They probably talk to the owner of the household, not the owner of the system.
I don't really think they had a quality sampling but I don't doubt it's a sizable percentage. I work with a guy who basically used his 360 as a Madden/Halo box. I think the only live arcade game he had heard of was Geometry Wars. And he works in IT so I know there are thousands that are worse than him.
1/3 of 149 people are unaware means precisely dick. What's 149 out of 11 million? That's what I thought. Research is worthless and folks over at Magid need to get a job.
Shame on Kotaku for posting this shit. A base of 149 people representing millions? That's voodoo research if I've ever seen it. Newsworthy polling amounts to more than chicken entrails Mcwhertor.
@justhesh: After som "McWhertor" style math: (though 1,800 is not a large enough sample out of 100,000,000 households) one can conclude that 10% of American homes own 360s. Even better.. 50% of people who buy HDTV's (HDTV has a 20% penetration...god knows where that value came from... Sony... irony!) own a at least ("at least" spices it up you see) one 360. Wait for it... their are 10,000,000 360's shipped so the math is good O_o
...Numbers are FUN! :D
@Akin:
Bingo. Wii owners and virtual console might be similar.... Although I feel like the "family" nature of the Wii might lead to parents' better understanding of the features.
@McWhertor: LOL...
@lestat730: This is really just hinting at one of the saddest facts of the industry.. a huge amount of people buy their consoles just to play Madden/NBA whatever/NCAA whatever/Shooting game.
The same thing applies for the Wii except replace all that with Wii Sports or Mario Party. The best thing about the "expanded audience" or "blue ocean" is that it gets more consoles in more households. Publishers just have to count on someone in that household becoming interested in playing more interesting/creative games. But hey, that's how I got started, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Pretty sure 1/3 of the consoles is not on any internet connection then 56k and hence no interest to download games that way.
I'm stumped. :|
No shit. Because I'm sure there 360 break before they can see what the damn thing can do.
Yes indeed. Shame on Kotaku for posting this. This kind of uneducated incorrect tripe belongs on Joystiq. All this tells me is that 0.0000005% of Xbox 360 owners are too dumb to see the little "Xbox Live Arcade" button thingy in the Games/Marketplace blades.
Holy shit, crybabies.
@Johnny Pathetic:
When people do these studies, you see, the ball-bearings are built in so that one can apply spin with high efficiency. This is nothing to be upset about. It's like a toy... a game even.
First the lack of HD knowledge, now this. MS needs better info distribution about their products.
I'm not surprised. Truth is, most people know precisely dick about the electronics they buy.
Most of you would cry if you'd seen the technological ignorance I've witnessed...most of which can be remedied by a simple manual read.
Its funny I got my 360 when it launched and it hasn't broken yet, its just funny when Sony fanboys make that excuse about the 360 even tho they never owned or played it.
Maybe it's hard o believe but thats the way the scientific statistic method is. When you bought baseball cards when you were young, did you ever understand what was on the back of it? you take nice sample and an average will be the same as if you asked the whole world. It's been working like that for a few thousands of years, since the first mathematicians started making statistics. when you heard that 5 out of 10 women cheat on their husbands once, you didn't sleep thinking what what your wife answered when they call your house, did you?
@VenoMuS: i guess, but if you dont know about a function to watch more expensive movies at higher rez, that's not as bad to me as missing out on a great feature like arcade.
@REELHigh_Roller: wrong thread, i think. nice.
@SomeRandomGuy: haha, you win.
Bogus. They contacted "households" that have a 360. So, the following conversation is likely:
Hello 'Mam, do you have a 360
My son has one, yeah
Did you know you can download arcade games on it over teh intraweb?
No, I didn't know that!
Thanks for the info *click*
@VakeroRokero: Sorry to burst your logic bubble, but until all 10 million Xbox 360 owners are polled, the "shaming" Kotaku readership won't believe that some people in their console camp are technologically ignorant.
Very, very rarely use Live let alone Arcade. But I'm still aware of them.
theres a whole tab on the menu of the 360 dedicated to this. it has "xbox live arcade" smack in the center i somehow doubt this poll.....
I think this proves my theory that at least 25% of all people who buy the 360 are totally clueless about technology.
Oh god I'm kidding please don't kill me.
@McWhertor: lol, dude you are just makin the xbots angry! quick!! They are throwing Zunes!!! aaaaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!
@VakeroRokero: I can see it now:
Wife and husband watching a movie on the couch.
*Ring*
Wife gets up and walks over to the phone and answers:
Wife: Hello?
Phone: Hello, I'm with Bulls worth and Ofshit inc. and we are conducting a non-profit study and would like to ask you a few questions. These questions may be of a personal nature but your anonymity is guaranteed.
Wife: OK?
Phone: Are you married?
Wife: Yes.
Phone: Is this your first marriage?
Wife: Yes.
Phone: Have you ever cheated on your husband?
... wife answers and returns to couch.
Husband: Honey, who was that?
Wife: Some group doing a survey on extra-marital affairs; they wanted to know if I've ever cheated on you.
Husband: Oh...
... wife and husband continue to watch movie
... 4 minutes pass
... 12 minutes pass
... 23 minutes pass
...45 minutes pass
Husband: So.. what'da say?
@VakeroRokero: At times like this... I thank god that this time around, it wasn't that was playing the part of the idiot who just didn't get it.
@SomeRandomGuy: "25% of Wii Owners Unaware That the Wii Plays Games Other than Wii Sports"
Let me fix that for you: "25% of Wii Owners Aware That the Wii Plays Games Other than Wii Sports".
...and in other news...
"75% of Japanese 360 owners thought they were buying a slim white PS3."
@McWhertor: "Holy shit, crybabies."
I 120% agree. :)
@FreddyGlitter: That's pretty much how it probably went w/several of those 149 people. I'm sure there are quite a few people who are completely ignorant about XBLA, but 149 people is a horribly small number for a statistical sample group. I hope nobody is actually paying this company to do this sort of shoddy research.
