More Dragon Ball Z details! Kung Fu Hustle star Stephen Chow will be producing the live action DBZ, and the 20th Century Fox flick will be helmed by former The X-Files writer and Final Destination director James Wong. Taking the role of Goku will be Justin Chatwin, who was Tom Cruise's son in War of the Worlds. Piccolo will be played by James Marsters. The budget hasn't been announced, but shooting will commence later this year. It's slated for an August 15, 2008 release. Hope it doesn't suck.

Does anyone think this is a good idea?
I can't wait to host a double feature of the DoA movie and the DBZ movie.
BTW James Marsters - Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Yeah I'm certainly not holding my breat for this to be anything better than so bad it is funny.
Aw fuck.
"Goku will be Justin Chatwin, who was Tom Cruise's son in War of the Worlds. Piccolo will be played by James Marsters."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh my god.. I have to see this. its an opportunity to see MST3k quality crap movies in this day and age.
Justin chatwin is going to have to gain 100 pounds of muscle.
Stephen Chow? When I read the title I thought that there was nothing that could make me interested in a DBZ anything.
10 seconds later, I stand corrected. If it is half as good as Shaolin Soccer, I'll be ecstatic to pay $10 to see it.
Is there a rock I can hide under while this thing is being hyped?
James Marsters?
Spike?!
He's cool, but there's no way in hell that this could be any good. Where's the Tim Schafer/great dane shit analogy when you need it?
Oh god no, aren't the animated movies bad enough?
@Ergophobia:
lol my exact thoughts. this ought to be so bad its going to be great
Wait, Stephen Chow?
Justin Chatwin? All I remember from that movie is him running off to his doom, only to reappear unharmed at the end of the movie.
steven chow? awesome!
All I need to see is the first commercial or preview in the movie theaters, and then I can confirm this movie will be epic.
@Ergophobia: That reminds me, they're doing Transformers next over at Rifftrax...
Or maybe another planet? I just don't wanna be here for the duration that it's being advertised and talked about.
how are they gonna do the hair-do?
I think I feel vomit in my mouth.
Steven Chow = Awesome
but what's up with the casting?
@justhesh:
Rifftrax? I need to check that out.
This will be the worst movie adaptation of all time. I HAVE TO GO SEE THIS MOVIE! I so can't wait till it comes out!!!
Stephen Chow is great but James Wong is just mediocre. I don't know what to expect.
Stephen Chow? That's a surprise. I can't imagine this movie being any good, but I'll probably end up seeing it out of curiosity.
...and the world descended into darkness.
Wow. Just watched Season 3 today.
Dude has the face for Goku, I guess, but yeah, he needs to pull a Topher Grace, and then some.
Other guy's probably a good Piccolo.
Just when you thought the days of yellowfacing were over..
@Ergophobia: oh yea. rifftrax is perfect for the MST3K fans. its interesting how they can take really good movies and still make them funny (casino royale) but still cover horrible movies (battlefield earth, eragon). def great for a night with the friends. a few dollars to download the mp3, rent the dvd if you dont have it, and its super easy to sync up.
One thing that I wonder about is if anyone in the movie would actually announce their attacks, imagine this guy actually say kamehameha in the movie.
It just sounds so shitty in my head when I think about it.
@Ergophobia: You know not of the Rifftrax? My god, man! GO! RUN TO RiffTrax.com!
I like this news, weird, yes. But I can't help but want to find out about the movie. I'm a huge fan of the series, and I think the casting is honestly pretty good/interesting. Can't wait to see it.
The movie will have to 10 hours long to accommodate the week-long build-up attacks.
I take it the movie will take place early in the series since the article says Piccolo would be the main villain.
I am kind of disappointed due to it would have been nice to see Freeza, Cell, Buu, or even Baby. But I guess they are putting it in a nice spot so they can show off Vegeta Gohan, etc.
Hm...nvrm, I am happy with their choice. >.<
Stephen Chow rocks! But the rest of the cast? Not so hot.
Bad news: Nothing in James Wong's career shows that he knows how to capture subtext on celluloid.
Good news: DBZ has never heard of subtext.
Anybody know anything about the budget for this movie?
I think it's probably a safe bet that it's going to be... (wait for it)....
OVER NINE THOUUUUSAAANNNNNNNND
I'm actually looking forward to this.
I'm a proud DBZ fan (Japanese only though).
Goku is supposed to be goofy and well.. act kinda gay and dumb. I thik the casting choice is good enough for it. Also, at the point in the series the movie seems to be based off of, Goku wasn't all that muscular.
I really think James Marsters can pull off his role as well. Mind you, his voice isn't as deep as I think it should be... he can still pull it off. I have faith.
Stephen Chow?!?! How can this movie not be at least worth the cost of a movie ticket? If it is half as good as his past films, DBZ will kick enough ass to get my money.
Wait, no, I take that back.
Let's take bets on how many tickets this will sell. Personally, I think they'll be lucky if they sell...
OVER NINE THOUUUUSAAANNNNNNNND
@WGSXFrank:
"I'm a Proud DBZ fan"
Well, have fun with that.
Is there going to be subtitles? No? I'll pass.
Dragon Ball Z was the Anime success in America of yesteryear. Why now? Now it's all about that Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. I wonder when they'll make a live action movie of those two.
I hope Uwe jumps on this flick! Beside Stephen Chow it's already spiraling down a path of crapticipation!
I don't think I can pass judgement on this just yet, but it doesn't seem like they are doing anything with super saiyans, and that gives me just a little bit of hope.
I'm really hoping it won't suck, since it holds a great deal of childhood memories. It will probably suck but still, maybe it just might not be terrible. Maybe.
OH Jesus.
@Yoshi3gg:
You're first joke wasn't funny, and your second was worse. If at first you don't succeed, you fucking fail.
hey, Bash, from the article I just read which you pasted the link it doesn't sound like they were talking about a DBZ movie. They never mentioned the letter "Z" in the article and they even said Piccolo was Goku's main enemy (something that doesnt happen in DBZ but in the original DB where Goku is younger).
I was comparing shots of the anime characters and the actors listed and I actually can see quite the resemblence between them. Here's hoping...
So yeah, Im guessing they are going to make a movie from the original pre-Vegita and pre-super sayayins Dragon Ball and not DBZ.
From what I read of course.
This is going to be the most ridiculous movie ever. I'll have to see it on principal alone.
Also James marsters FTW but as Piccolo?!?!? WTF? Color me intrigued.
So the time has come.. It may suck as a movie (But i do like chow's movie) but i will end up seeing it anyway for sure! ah.. the memorie.. ^_^
kamehamehahahaha gawd why bother this movie is going to blow
What in the hell is Stehen Chow thinking?!
@Alex_Mexico:
You might be onto something here. I think starting out with Dragon ball would be a good direction, and the cast would make more sense too. Then the sequel could be Dragon Ball Z or whatever. I'm up for that.
I think the idea in general is too late though. With Stephen Chow on board, I almost want it to be a comedy. Like a spoof of DBZ
I dotn see how this movie is going to be remotley good. I would love to eat my hat but this movie will suck balls.
@CaptLtrl: No, I'm pretty sure he was green.
I'm going to hold my tongue till I actually see some footage of this one. I will say that I'm getting a rather sickening Double Dragon vibe from this.
@vizion:
If they were to do a DB movie I would prefer DBZ but they are, maybe, shooting for a new franchise with "sequelities".
Sad thing is that they'll never make enough money to justify a DB sequel (and thus making a DBZ movie after the original DB's movie). Yeah, maybe...
