According to Bloomberg's estimate, based on information from financial analysts, Sony's games division may post up to a record-breaking 245 billion yen loss for its financial year. That's just over $2 billion (USD) and largely a result of a billion dollar loss from this most recent quarter, much of it tied to the PLAYSTATION 3.
In other words, ouch.
That massive deficit will supposedly cause Sony as a whole to post a $630 million loss for the quarter, despite raking in gobs of cash for movies like Spider-Man 3 and consumer electronics such as Bravia TVs and digital cameras.
While posting a loss during the fiscal year of a new PlayStation product launch is nothing new for Sony, this is the bank bustin' stuff of legend. If Sony drops the price of the PS3 this coming year, expect more pain in the games division.
