The Commodore 64's fondly remembered SID audio chip seems like a perfect match for a retro rhythm game, doesn't it? It seems that Toni Westbrook thinks so, as he's fashioned the PSX64 controller adapter to work with a Guitar Hero guitar controller—the PlayStation 2 type—and is hard at work on the C64 port of the game. Lo-fi hacking at its best.

New top down view!
Retro look to help you feel in the moment!
Password system to save your progress.
Really, this is what rockin in the 80's should have looked like.
MMM NES port anybody?
DO WANT!
i bet even this has stereo sound
@blehh: WwwWw
Thats some powerful shit there.
That's awesome!
Jordan awaits its retro debut!!!!
Even more proof that C64 is all kinds of awesome. I loved that damn computer.
Wow to think most people say computer geeks don't have lives. Boy are they wrong!
Pretty damn cool!
He even still have an old original C= 1702 monitor, but the C=64 is the C revision not the original brown box ;-).
Yah SID rulez, even a friend of mine whih is musician bought one of those SID station ;-).
yes but can he play john the fisherman on expert level?
Making new technology work with old technology is always fun to see. It's like a "what-if" machine.
While this is cool and all...it's kinda sad also. Dude seriously needs to do something more meaningful with his spare time.
that's fly, dope, awesome and rad.
@mrpoopiepants:
Maybe you should do something more meaningful than commenting on a gaming blog?
This is that guy's hobby, and it looks like a damn fun one too. Live and let live.
someone explain the 'wwwww' phenomenon to me.
Impressive...yet so very pointless.
@geekgrrl: i think bashcraft said it's what the cool kids in japan do phonetically for 'lawl' or elle-oh-elle.
downgrades?!?!?!
the next-gen begins here.
BELIEVE!
@geekgrrl: [kotaku.com]
It's a the newest way to show everyone that you're a hopeless Japanophile loser.
DUDE I still have that monitor. that's a commodore 1710 monitor from days of yore. I had my Ps3 hooked up to it for a little while before I got the 32 HDTV. Awesome monitor...better than SDTV for sure.
uh...what was the topic again?
@Intruder: wait...1702? there was a 1702 monitor? mine is a 1710...wtf?
this beats the lame beatgame for iphone anyday
Dude, on his page for the PSX64 interface he has a Lazarian cartridge plugged into his 64! That was one of my favorite games when I was like 5 years old. I drove my family crazy with the "Ode to Joy" theme music it played incessantly in the background. Good times. Although, nothing could fully usurp Conan as my favorite 64 game.
Words cannot describe how awesome Commodore Hero would be. And yeah, stereo sound, which makes it superior to at least one version =)
Can describe the "non-stereo" thing to me? I must have missed this...
@SuperMaxZero: The Wii version of Guitar Hero 3 has the mono blues
@SuperMaxZero: The Wii version of Guitar Hero 3 only outputs in mono in single player mode. In multi-player, each side outputs that player's audio. The intro videos are in stereo.
@SuperMaxZero:
Wii version has Monosound
PS3 version suffers from lag
360 has achievement bugs
PS2 looks funny, no online support
At this rate I probably would be better off with the C-64 version.
@Pezdispenser: Yeah, but you'd probably have to deal with insane loading times.
Unless, of course, you got Epyx's "Fast Load" cartridge.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
sweet!
but...why?
I'm holding out for a 2600 version of Portal.
Oh Commodore 64...you have brought us so much...and you still want to give us more. Anything using the SID chip is awesome...but I just can't fathom someone playing Guitar Hero on a C64.
Best port evar
SWEET... I'm gonna bust my dad's old commodore out from that basement@mossberg:
@BLiNk:
Better than the Wii's!
:-p
Anyways, I miss my C64. Good times growing up. Had over 200 games and loves the program books where you can make your own.
Actually, most people hear (or heard) the C64 in mono as well. I believe the only way to get stereo from it is to use a DIN cable, otherwise you are left with the RF output and are only getting mono through the aerial cable.
all you really need for guitar hero are five colors on the screen. I'm surprised this wasn't done sooner.
Yes. Tell me next time about a Guitar Hero or Rock Band hack that does Haruhi's "God Knows...", oy. Playing that song WHILE in a Bunnygirl outfit is a perfect guarantee that you are bad-ASS. Regardless of gender.
"Sweet child o' mine" intro in midi... yes please.
This proves that we dont really need new systems with better technology. We still dont have all the games we could have had in the 80s. We could still have new nes games that are fun and innovative if it was supported.
Its nice having new and improved graphics and everything, but we really need more innovation. New and better gameplay.
I know there are still many Commodore 64 fans out there, and one of them is Toni Westbrook; a guy that work on a project called Shredz64, that aim to create connectivity and interaction between Guitar Hero controller with C64.
Many games that don't rely on graphics could work on older systems, the problems is that people want the better graphics. I am actually surprised someone has not done this sooner actually.
Lo-fi hacking? Dude, this isn't hacking... its just plain programming.
That is ghetto. If it can output in Stereo it has one up on the Wii version.
So when can we expect this for the Genesis or Super Nintendo?
OH MY GOODNESS!! I have that exact monitor in my house and I play games on it!!
OH MY GOODNESS, I have the exact same monitor in the picture. I still play games on it.
