Jeux-France, in what I can only hope is an arousingly gravelly Gallic accent, are reporting that Japan are going to see GT5 Prologue on their shelves by the end of the year. Not in Japan? They also report it'll be available for download in the West "this autumn".

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, as the download version is called, will be apparently offer several cars and circuits as well as online play via the Gran Turismo network. It's not specified at this point whether it will be free or paid-for content.
