Last talk for the day, and it's the one I'm most looking forward to. Goichi Suda. Called "Initial Contact: the impact, emotions and feelings of people when they first experience & interact with Video Games" [breath], it should be a whole lot of good times.
4:50pm - Suda gets things underway. And...it's a bit of a mess. The translator, bless her, is having all kinds of trouble getting his message across. Game titles are butchered, and his arty ponderings come out like a shitty Babelfish translation. Hurts my brain. Still, can't blame her - for an off-the-shelf translator, this must sound like a pile of old rubbish. I get the general impression he's talking about the history of Grasshopper.
4:58pm - A clip of the Silver Case. I've no idea what's going on. Now he's undressing! Another clip, another game I've never played, I've still got no idea what's going on. This is nuts.
5:03pm - Oh, OK. Killer7. I'm getting the distinct impression this is going to go down a lot like Mizuguchi's talk.
5:06pm - He's wearing the best pair of cowboy boots I've ever seen. Giant, pistachio-green ones, He's talking about...something, translator is still making no sense, but I can't stop looking at those boots.
5:08pm - Oh, new translator! The old one has been taken out back and fed to Wu's pigs. The new one is much better, she knows about buttons and Sony PlayStation 2s. Things are looking up. Still longing for those boots.
5:15pm - OK, BACK ON TRACK! He's talking about what makes his games "punk". It involves a lot of fighting. Fighting with the industry, with himself, with his staff. Sounds cool. I should use that. "I'm not fighting...I'm punk".
5:15pm - An important part of games shold be strong story. He's telling a cool story about a friend of his, who he caught crying over an old NES shooter. The main character dies, the kid freaks out, and he'd never seen his friend cry. Ever.
5:21pm - He used to be an undertaker and a real estate agent? Awesome. I did not know that. Anyway, his background and his gratefulness to the industry mean he drives himself to make only highly original games - it can't have come out anywhere else, from anyone else.
5:24pm - "If I didn't have games in my life, I'd be very sad. That shouldn't happen. I ask you all to make games, and to make punk games!". Quote of the conference? Perhaps!
5:25pm - Oh no. He was about to show a clip of No More Heroes, and the PR lady is trying to kick him off the stage! Tragedy!
5:27pm - Common sense prevails. The clip is shown. "Maybe June-July release date in Northern hemisphere". Great. None of us are from the northern hemisphere, though. Oops. Still, rad address. Even his talk was punk. I'm off to see if I can steal those boots.
