Hollywood Director Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Miami Vice) is co-chairman of Digital Doman, a special effects studio that is interested in getting into the business of video games. Digital Domain has already started looking into acquiring one or two development companies for their new venture and even started talking to other directors who may be interested.
Most film-based games are developed through third parties, and filmmakers often have little or no creative control. By contrast, Digital would let filmmakers direct their own games.
If everything goes swimmingly, Digital Domain plan to develop four to five games by 2009. How they are going to keep up with the industry giants that are already churning out games isn't clear, but after creating the 60-second spot for Gears of War, they at least have one idea on how they could be successful. Like in the commercial, Digital Domain plans to create animations using video game software in real time, rather by the frame-by-frame technique. The commercial only took about half the time it normally takes to make. Best of luck to them, but how good can a game from the people who made the commerical for Gears of War be?
