Epic Games' Gears of War was arguably one of the most highly anticipated games of 2006. The hype leading up to it was incredible and it managed to slide in to a sweet spot just before the PS3 and Wii launches. The reviews have been overwhelmingly solid although like any game, it's also had it detractors.
What can't be denied is that GOW has chainsawed it's way to not only being the fastest selling game of 2006, but the fastest selling original Xbox title of all time. 1 million copies were sold in it's first two weeks and Xbox Live Gold memberships have risen by 50%, driving it to the Number #1 Game on Xbox Live.
That's quite a collection of accolades! Unless something really damn amazing comes along between now and the end of the year, I predict GOW will sweep Game Of The Year in every major game magazine, probably taking home a pile of Best FPS as well.
