I was talking to the Epic folks about Unreal Tournament III earlier today and the way the game will allow PS3 users to upload original content to the console when Mark Rein, veep of Epic Games, walked up.
It was a bit hot and he was fanning himself with what looked to be a sizeable pad of paper with a Gears of War cover. Turns out it was the movie script, well a form of the script for the movie. Rein said in a recent meeting with the script writer he apologized that he had only had time to read through the first 22 pages of the script. Not to worry, says the writer, and laid on him this special little Gears book. a graphic novelization of the script created specific for executives who don't have time to read the entire thing.
"I got him to sign it," Rein said showing me. What he wouldn't show me, well take a picture of, was the inside of the book. He did leaf through it until he got to one page, the top filled with dark images bathed in red and earth tons, the bottom filled with several lines of clean, white text.
"I love this line," Rein said, and began to read out of it, out loud to both of us. The last line "today we all get fucked gentlemen" seemed to resonate in the empty hallway when he was done.

I would rather have the Halo movie.
I'd rather have a copy of Gears of War on my PC that didn't need a super computer to run.
*agreed*
At least Halo has a competent narrative and dialogue,
not "Eat sh*t and die".
I don't have high hops considering what the game produced.
I'd rather not get fucked. Atleast not in Gears, to be specific.
@NotSoCool: It won't... the Unreal Engine 3.0 is optimized for very low-spec hardware. You'll be fine with a relatively recent PC!
'Batshit crazy' and 'back in your hole' are much better.
*hopes
Bah, it better not end up like the Doom movie...
But it will anyway.
mmm nah, I rather have a Gears of War movie then a Halo one. Sorry but Halo story etc turned shit after Halo 2 in my opinion, GOW is still great (even without a story lol,) who knows, perhaps it can be a classic, like the Doom movie...
Yeah, but what about details on the PS3/UT3 thing?
No AC, what a way to be cheap E3.
@Zeouterlimits:
Halo had a more competent set of dialogue?
Maybe from the Covenant lol.
But seriously, Gears lends itself to a more visceral experience, I don't think they'll be trying to go for shakespeare...
@Zeouterlimits:
Really? I was just reading a Halo 3 single-player preview and they were talking about how the marines were saying things like, "I'm gonna send you back to planet Jackass, jackass!"
@Weresmurf
I found it better than "Eat Sh*t and die". Cortana often speaks in the backround, compares much more favorably to the non-existent Anya.
I really thought Gears had so much potential plot & character wise, that it all went to waste in a non-existent narrative and bland dialogue.
@Samos42
As I said above, I was refering more to Cortana speaking in the backround. The marines aren't like Dom, they're useless Cannon-fodder I like to beat up (In Halo 1 it was so funny slapping them around with the Assault Rifle).
But Dom is a main character, and by your side for almost the entire game, like Cortana {in 1 & 2}, and I feel Cortana's dialogue was much better than Doms. And any character in GoW for that matter.
I don't mean to come off hating GoW, I really enjoyed that game for it's actual gameplay, I just HATED the narrative. I felt it was a missed opportunity for an otherwise stunned game.
Gears has a plot? Oh, no wait this is a new action movie - they don't need plots!
(I also would prefer a Halo movie :( )
Why was this taken down from Kotaku?
And it's now back up....
Strange, perhaps Epic were not happy you mentioned it?
It's not earth shattering.
But oh well, good for it to be back.
It doesn't bode well for the movie that the VP of the studio that developed the IP is gonna approve the script based on a 'Gears of War for Dummies' comic...
I hope it's as awesome as Doom was!
It's a brainless game and we expect a brainy movie?
@Irenicus: Halo 2 is the same as The Empire Strikes Back, it's supposed to be the cliffhanger that segues into the final iteration of the trilogy. Halo had humans pitted against the Covenant and the Flood. Then Halo 2 had the Covenant and humans joining forces against a common enemy. The Halo series storyline has so much going for it. From religious fanatics to politics. Gears of War is just the same tired bullshit of Aliens wanting to kill humans because they think they're weak.
Like I said, I would rather have a Halo movie. Especially since it was WETA and Peter Jackson who were signed onto the project.
I heard parallels between Gears and real life drawn, which actually sound feasible.
Imulsion = Oil
Locusts = generic-middle-eastern
COGs = US military
E-Day = Sept. 11
Interesting if they carried those parallels into a movie to make something a bit thoughtful and topical, but I doubt they'll go to that depth unfortunately.
@Custom Reality:
Please, Halo is just a derivative as Gears of War. Aliens attacking earth and different people coming together to defend themselves is nothing new. Wheter its the computer hacker and the air force pilot in ID4 or the humans and covenant in Halo, it's been done many times before. I still think Halo and Gears of War are good games, I just don't care much for their tired storylines.
@Wubbytoes: When was the last time you read a book or saw a movie, or even played a game where humans were being exterminated due to humans being against some alien's religion? When was the last time you saw a movie or read a book where said aliens were politically overthrown from their own planet only to join the humans in a universal war?
Halo, story-wise, is to consoles as Half-Life was to the PC world.
@elevenoverzero: So you're saying gears parallels reality because there are protagonists, enemies, resources and a war-starting event. Fascinating. Got any 9/11 conspiracy theories to go with that?
I bet it's really just a flick-book animation :P.
Why would someone be impressed enough with Gears' plot to make a movie out of it? The plot consists of a bunch of over bearing exaggerated male stereotypes running around in a futuristic sci-fi conflict that has about as much depth as a barren plain. And what wonderful narrative dialog they have such as the introspective line "eat shit and die". If Epic would have spent more time on the story, which actually has a very decent premise, Gears would have been immensely better for it. Instead we're left on a *spoilers* mysterious train which somehow has a bomb on it and houses the nameless arch villain who we've only seen twice and presumably has no name or designation. Oh wait! The achievement told me his name is General RAAM. What a totally acceptable way to develop a character. Let the name on the achievement tell us!
comparing the stories of halo and gears is a little dumb..i mean, both sucks
@Custom Reality:
Did you see that piece of garbage they showed at the MS Press Conference? It looked like it was made by a college Communications major, when in reality it was made ny Neill Blomkamp (the guy who was set to direct the real movie) and WETA. It's on XBL right now, go download it and you will totally rethink wanting that movie. If it got made, it would really suck. There's a reason no studios wanted it.
But if you have followed Epic for awhile with games like Unreal and you know anything about Cliffy B, he is like mini midas(the king) he can turn stuff to gold by touching it and he is keeping tabs on the movie...so no fear have faith in Epic.They are not famous for nothing!!
I think the main thing, is that Halo moreso lends itself to a Saving Private Ryan style of war movie, where you have big armies fighting each other, massive battles etc etc, but Gears, well to me, Gears should be a squad based horror movie. Have a scene or two of a big battle, but the heart of the movie should be a horror/action.
The only way Gears of War could be a good movie is as a comedy. Either a Terry Tate type gag with Cole Train at a military base, or a buddy cop type comedy with Marcus and Dom.
@Doomstink: Agreed. Digital Domains did a much better job with that Monday night football commercial called "starry night". Besides, Peter Jackson isn't that good of a producer. He'd have made a Halo movie project go 30 million over budget.
The movie would probably suck like Doom unless they get the right director. I'd be laughing my ass off if Uwe Boll directs. Also, @doomstink, I agree with you. That live action looked like garbage. It also helped to show just how ridiculous a live action Halo movie would have looked in the mans hands.
Both Gears and Halo have decent enough plots, neither told amazingly well but well enough. They are games and thats the most important bit for me. Plot should be take a back seat to playing.
Gears has the edge for me - it s so lean and it doesn't hand you everything on a plate - why would Marcus know RAAMs name?
And BMAN784, they don't make movies for the plots - its marketing muscle.
If the movie is successful that thing is going to be worth a shitload as a collectable.
@cell9song
true these movies would make shit loads of cash because the inital base of people that have these games would go and see it. Pity that the movie execs view us as drones following pop culture.
Read this [www.latinoreview.com] Then tell me gears of war doesn't have a plot, a deep story or isn't capable of being the source of a good movie.
Gears of War the game is like a snapshot of the gears universe. It's like watching ' The Empire strikes Back' without watching 'A New Hope' first.
The sets for the interiors of the final building sequence in TRANSFORMERS would have been perfect for a GEARS movie. I almost felt like I recognized them from the game.
I love gears of war. I didn't have a problem with the way they revealed General Raam. I think it is the case of using your imagination to fill in the gaps. I know people love to have every detail spelled out to them, but sometimes that's not how it works.
I hope it has a better story than the game.....
I dunno what everyone obsession with a halo movie is, it would just be the same story as teh first one, which you already know, so whats the point in watching it. now a Gears movie wuld be good because it would allow them to make a hwole new story since the didn't really have a big storyline.
