GDC07: Super Mario Galaxy Confirmed for 07

Earlier today during a keynote Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Super Mario Galaxy would be coming out this year.

Miyamoto said that Super Mario Galaxy explores some of the things first seen in Mario 128. The brief video he played, showed Mario flying through the air, running around small planets and other rotating surfaces and climbing vines from one planet to another, with the gravity flipping as he changed locations.

He ended that part of his speech by saying: "You'll be able to play Super Mario Galaxy this year."

  • Oh yes.....

  • I just saw this on gamevideos:

It looks absolutely amazing. I don't care how long they push this back, it looks like it's going to be great.

  • As if it hasn't been confirmed for 07 several times already?

"This year" does not mean "this summer".

    Drought continues.

  • As long as it's not December 2007.

@KeyonSumner: I worry that that's probably what it's gonna end up being at this rate. A Mario game out JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS!? Come on, you know that's Nintendo's plan.

  • I have Super Paper Mario, I'll be fine if it doesn't come out for a while.

  • Video please? Anyone?

  • @Archaotic

I fear you may be right. Though i've never wished for anyone to be more wrong!

And i think they'll either save metroid or mario for the xmas shopping bonanza... God i hope not.

  • How about... WHEN?

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 03:29 PM on 03/08/07 *

@KeyonSumner: I can pretty much guarantee it'll be Mario for the Christmas rush.

That way all the soccer moms can run out and buy Little Billy the NEW MARIO GAME! Look at how frantically NSMB is STILL selling, while Metroid Prime Hunters has stalled out in retail pretty solidly after a few months.

All I can think of now is the "NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUR!" video...because I can almost guarantee that's what Nintendo wants to have happen with Mario. They did it once with the console, they want to do it again with the new Mario game.

  • Gaaaaaaameeeees....we hunger for gaaaaaameeeeessssss......

  • This year? Sweet! Just like how fall of 2005 meant fall of 2006 for Twilight Princess, and how Smash Bros Brawl's release went from spring 07 to "maybe sometime this year".

  • Right then. This means that we can all anxiously look forward to November or December of 2007. Wahoo?

  • Did anyone else realize he said this in the same speech he said game developers shouldn't be afraid of delaying games?

  • And this would be the first time ever Nintendo failed to release a game when they promised. I mean, Twilight Princess wasn't a year late.

  • @KeyonSumner: It definitely will be Dec 2007. They may even add a few months to the year so that way they can hold it from us longer.
    Man my throat is dry.

  • "Did anyone else realize he said this in the same speech he said game developers shouldn't be afraid of delaying games?"

...because we all LOVE crappy games.

  • @Archaotic:

Here's the list of upcoming first or second-party games. Most of these are expected in '07 or early '08 (stolen from the PA forums):

    Animal Crossing
    Battalion Wars II
    Disaster: Day of Crisis
    DK: Bongo Blast
    Fire Emblem: Akatsuki no Megami
    Forever Blue
    Kirby Wii
    Mario Strikers Charged
    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
    Pokémon Battle Revolution
    Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    Wii Music
    Wii Health Pack

With all those games in the pipeline, the drought can't last forever. I expect that it will be followed by a flood as soon as the Wii's supply problems are sorted out.

There's no point releasing "AAA" games when half the people who want to buy them can't get their hands on a console.

  • "You'll be able to play it this year!"

"...if you get invited to E3 and make it to our booth. Otherwise, you'll be waiting for the Wii2 in 2012!"

  • @Marlor:
"There's no point releasing "AAA" games when half the people who want to buy them can't get their hands on a console."

I think there is a point. As one of the people that already purchased a Wii, I would like to be able to play another good game for the system. Why should existing owners have to wait for more people to get on board? Good games will bring more people on board.

I'm not certain this would play out as an intelligent decision, and feeds into some of the frustration people have with Nintendo. Quality over quantity is great when people have some quality games to play, but hurts when they finish out all their quality titles months before the next one comes out.

  • *sigh* I getting tired of hearing people talk about a drought. Go play SSX and Sonic. Next month is Super Paper Mario and Bust-A-Move.

Mortal Kombat if fighting games rub you the right way the month after that and Mario Party 8 if your hunger for party games isn't already fed for the better part of this year with smooth moves and wii sports.

The spider man game might not suck...not gonna hold my breath but I might not. Pokemon Battle Rev in June and this is just from the incomplete Q2 list.
