Sony Turns PS3 Into DVR

ps3tvthing.jpgEarly next year the PlayStation 3 takes a big step towards becoming the ultimate entertainment box in Europe. At Sony's Games Convention press conference they announced Play TV, a device that hooks between your PS3 and television that will allow the console to record one channel while you watch another. Play TV not only supports high definition video but will also allow you to stream live or recorded video from the PS3 directly to your PSP via Remote play, effectively allowing you to watch your television shows on the handheld from anywhere in the world. Freaking amazing stuff. I'm impressed. Hell, even Crecente was impressed. No word on when the feature could be coming to regions outside of Europe, but I've no doubt in my mind that it will, and it will be awesome.

PlayTV Unlocks Free Digital TV On PlayStation 3

Watch, record and replay TV shows on demand

Turn PS3 into a digital personal video recorder and record programmes to watch anytime, anywhere

Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the introduction of PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). PlayTV will be available in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early in 2008, with other PAL territories to follow in due course.

Designed to reinforce PS3's rightful place in the Living Room at the heart of the home entertainment needs, the twin channel TV tuner peripheral and PVR software turns PS3 into a state of the art TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. PlayTV will also record individual programmes or whole series1 to the PS3 hard drive for viewing later on the family TV, or for transferring to the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) for remote viewing outside of the home.

Operating on the widely available Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial (DVB-T) format, PlayTV uses an incredibly quick and easy to use 7-day Electronic Programme Guide EPG2. that provides the navigation for programming the PVR features of PlayTV.

In line with PlayStation's focus on advanced technology made easy, PlayTV provides a host of added value features seldom seen on anything but the highest cost standalone PVRs:

· PlayTV's two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3's already impressive High Definition credentials.

· Unlike the electronic programme guides found on conventional satellite and cable services, PlayTV's EPG is lightning fast, and simple to use with either PS3's SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control to really enhance viewing pleasure.

· Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a positive joy to use compared with the complexity of some standalone PVR models

· Seamless connectivity with PSP allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on PSP via a Wi-Fi connection (using Remote Play feature). Alternatively, quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.

· Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV. PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays, maximising the viewing experience.

· PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PLAYSTATION®Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.

"The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family," said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PLAYSTATION Network support. With the introduction of PlayTV's state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.

  • That's actually cool, now if only I had a PS3.

  • That's cool and all, but does it play games?

  • Nice, but I'll stick w/ my TiVo.

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 12:31 PM on 08/22/07 *

@GosoVision: It DOES! Thank you for asking. But wait, there's more!

Great feature, I'll likely invest. For those of us who don't have a DVR yet, it's a cheaper investment that I should think I'd enjoy.

  • I heard a rumor it will have videogames that are fun to play in the future, any mention of that?

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 12:31 PM on 08/22/07 *

Hopefully cheaper, anyway. I'm a bit optimistic about such things.

  • Cool stuff, but i'd rather hear some exciting news about games :x

  • So basically, the PS3 is no a glorified Sky + box.

    Any danger of some games?

  • This secures the PS3 as more of a media center than a gaming console. I like it!

  • @Dolgo:

Zing zing, what a funny guy. Cause that's not an overused and dated joke or anything. I forgot all the other consoles have tons and tons of AAA titles out right now!... like xbox and gears... and.... and... well wii has .... zelda .... anddd.... anddd..... and.....

  • Really, does everyone still believe that there are no games coming out for the PS3? Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo3. Name me all the other super amazing, only Xbox games. This is just a really nice additional feature that shows what Sony is apparently trying to do, secure the PS3 as the media center of the house. Good idea or bad, it's still something different.

  • See, the Europeans are getting something awesome the US won't be getting... or at least won't be getting for a while.

Plus the Folklore demo out on the EU PS Store now.

  • I'm just wondering how it will work in the USA. We have cable companies and satellite companies with differing standards and protocols and cablecard is looked at like red-headed bastard step-child by those same companies. It would seem like a waste if this could only do OTA.

I have to giggle at them hyping 1080p again though. There is currently nobody doing 1080p TV signals and likely won't be for a long while. That does raise the DVR problem though. 60-80GBs isn't going to be enough for a HD DVR and not everyone realizes they can upgrade the PS3's HDD.

  • @Dolgo: That's the same question I asked before the liveblogging and it would appear that other than the two obvious ones, the jury is still out.

  • This definitely makes me a lot more eager to pick up a PS3. I like the future games better (than 360), it's now a DVR, and it's also a media extender (like the 360). I think it just won my dollars.

  • Add Bioshock to your list of XBox360 titles and you have a point. I've got a PS3 and I'm sorry, Sony can't seem to focus on one thing without moving into uncharted territory.

  • This is a cool feature. even though a lot of haters will say *what does that have to do with gaming?* it doesnt matter because its another cool feature for the ps3

  • The most important things, when this is coming out, and how much will it cost?...

  • Well I say get the main thing done right first, then add cool features. You don't say "my car only goes 40mph but man! taste the burrito I just cooked in the indash microwave!"

  • call me crazy but isnt the 360 supposed to have dvr when the iptv stuff comes out and that was announced for north america at least

  • @Dolgo:

It's what students in my days called the shotgun method when answering a test question. Instead of focusing on two or three things and making that work to the best of the console's ability Sony is just throwing everything but the kitchen sink (though that may not be far behind if the toilet thrones at GC is any indication) at the consumers. It's almost like their way of telling consumers this is why it costs so much and for all this stuff we're throwing at you you should be glad we're selling it to you for cheap.

  • @Pegleg Joe:

You may be able to stream media from a PC to a PS3, but it is no Windows Media Center Extender.

  • DVR? I have a $30 TV tuner card that does that!

  • @Dolgo:

Well... i mean, bioshock like a lot of 360 games, are also PC games. I played both the 360 demo and pc demo and i think the pc one is better, even if only slightly, so i got it for PC. It looked better than on my 360, and i can't give up the mouse / keyboard for controller :x

  • Yes. I would be happy to lay down the cash for a PS3 but I want to be buying a great gaming console, not a bunch of crap that I won't use. Now, more than ever they need to be announcing some big exclusives, not a fucking DVR function. Oh yeah, I forgot... FIFA 08!!!!

  • I agree TULL, I guess I just have bad memories of hearing all this "center of entertainment" way back with the PS2.

  • @Dolgo: Great analogy...

  • @GosoVision: @Dolgo: @Mpalm: @inphanta:

dear clowns: please go back and look at E3, this joke is tired and not even relevant anymore.
With the exception of exclusives (360 gets Mistwalker stuff, Mass Effect, Halo; on the other side, FF, MGS, Uncharted etc), pretty much every big title is coming to both. Let's try to read the article a bit before taking shots.

Honestly, its a pretty exciting function. I wasnt as hyped about the digital tuner thing but this sounds pretty cool...leave it to some of us to find a reason to bitch about an interesting application that, like all others, is optional.

  • This is great news. Looking forward to seeing the UI.

  • Should I start having my brain implants now to connect to a PS3 ?

  • Hate the PS3 all you want (I do most of the time), but there is no reason that anyone should think poorly of this.

Well, I suppose that depends on how much this addition costs, and how much of your harddrive it eats up, but the PSP streaming can partially make up for either of those faults.

I love things that encourage me to be lazy.

  • Next thing you will hear is a wheels attachment so it can be used as a skateboard at the next X-games. Okay that was too much I go away now, that was just stupid.

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 12:55 PM on 08/22/07 *

@TheIrishNinja: Mpalm is on our side, you goofball. He'd just rather hear about games than the DVR. Can't say as I blame him too much, I'd love to hear more game things out of the games convention myself.

  • Am I allowed to comment about this feature or should I just go back to playing the COD4 BETA???

  • Yes ladies and gentlemen, not only is it a $600 eyesore but it can also record your favorite tv shows, play the highest of the high definitions and calculate complex protein strains(?!). It can cook, clean, and purchase fine automobiles.

    Games? Who needs them?

  • Sounds interesting, but now they would have to compete with a $299 HD TiVO in the States (assuming it's coming to the States).

Videogame fanboys are mere amateurs compared to the TiVO zealots.

  • good way to get rid of old series 2 dvr ... at least it's HD DVR

  • guess i"m sold... on a PSP slim then... ha ha

now only if they'd say how much that adapter would cost and will it be something built into the system or a usb attachment.

  • Okay, it's a nice feature, but what about the games? Add the bonus features later, if this thing has no software, then I don't care if it can cook my dinner, babysit my children, and do my laundry, all while singing the Star Spangled Banner. It's supposed to be a game console.

  • But does it do Cable Card? QAM?

It will be pretty useless if not.

  • It think it is a nice feature. I wish the 360 would let me record HDTV. I only want about 3 to 4 hours of space to record on in case I miss a game or a movie or something. I could care less about DVR recording 200 TB type crap.

My big question is how much it costs. If it costs too much then the whole thing is pointless.

For the games thing, so what. The PS3 isn't getting nearly as good of games this year. We know that. So let's just shut up about it. Next year, bitches. Or the year after that. Eventally it might get as good of games as its cheaper competition. So there. Hell, it might even get a few of the 360's great games down the road. PS3 = patience.

  • Hey, kotaku, could I get banned from commenting simply so I don't have to respond to the stupidity here anymore?

    I tried self-restraint. It isn't working.

  • @Maldron: i have no sides! but yeah, my bad, just got caught up in the moment, i never get why people bitch about options.
"Home is gonna force me to walk around!"
"What if i want my controller to be connected by a wire? WHAT THEN, SONY?!"

ugh. yeah, options are awful. I mean, even if you dont use every section of XBL, its still cool to have them there.

@CollapseControl: *sigh* permission granted, flame on!

@Warren DeMontague: Ive heard zealots is the appropriate term, i know nothing of that market...pretty hardcore, then? i doubt this'll make a real dent, i kinda file it under "something i can use it to do" and sony likely files it under "if blu-ray takes off one day...hooo doggie". that's what id name that file.

  • Im buying a toilet that makes bread... \

    cant wait!

  • finally my folding at home, dust collecting, waffle maker has a purpose.

    no bring on heavenly sword.

  • All you PS3 haters need to seriously shut your trap and turn your way-back-machine to this year's E3 and ALL the deals MS made with movie studios to get MORE movies on XBL.

The 360 has been in the business of being a "media center" so all this "it's not related to games" nonsense needs to stop.

I have a DVR with DirecTV and I love it (ditched Tivo) but being able to watch Prison Break or Attack of the Show episodes from my PSP gives me all the more reason to hang onto it (trust me, I was getting worried). That invest in a bigger HDD for my PS3.

  • @Queasy: This is an important point. With all the music, downloads, recorded shows, and then games themselves, doesn't this necessitate a much larger hard-disk for the PS3 than Sony is offering ? Especially if recorded in HD? Guess people are still going to spring for the 200 GB disks to swap into the console. It seems a really pricey venture, on top of the console cost. But if you really need to see the crap that's on TV, go for it.

  • Europe getting something before everyone else? Unpossible!

@Maldron: Do you really think there are "sides" in this whole thing? The whole "No games for the PS3" is a bit of a meme right now, sort of like "In soviet russia" on slashdot. Until they have a decent catalog of titles that are out (not coming soon), I don't think the joke is going anywhere. Don't get me wrong, there are ravenous fanbois around, but I didn't seen anything like that thus far in this thread myself (well, maybe one... :-P). Hopefully now that the "Cool, but does it play games"? joke has been made it won't show up BELOW this comment, but I'm not holding my breath either.

  • I use Media Center with my 360 EXTENSIVELY and it works well, so I wouldn't diss Sony for the idea. My only question is can you record TV and play games at the same time? If the wife wants to record "Desperate Housewives", does that mean I can't play a game between 9 and 10 o'clock?

  • DVB-T... high definition...? MUAHAHAHA
