Phil Harrison popped by my chair after the press conference to chat for a second about how it went and I had a second to ask him about how this news might impact the U.S. Specifically I wanted to know if North America had a chance of getting the DVR service for the Playstation 3 or a video download service for the PSP.
The short answer, unfortunately, is no, well at least not yet.
The problem with the DVR is that the U.S. doesn't have terrestrial digital television yet, so while some cities like San DIego have it not nearly support in the U.S. to make it worth the effort for Sony. When that changes, and it will, Sony will be on the ball, Harrison said.
Unfortunately, things look much bleaker for the Sky service being rolled out in Europe. There is nothing really nationwide in the U.S. that delivers video content over the air by subscription. So, until that happens we won't be seeing that in the U.S.
Ps. Harrison is almost exactly one foot taller than me.

you wear funny shirts and have shiny teeth.
phil has a huge watch and little head.
BIRD SHIRT IS BACK!
It's a shame how the US is always left behind Europe and Japan in technical/electronic things such as this. I mean, they've had bullet trains for how long?
Dont these guys BUILD the freaking technology?
couldnt they _make_ a device that could fit the needs of North America?
Sounds like a bunch of hassenpfeffer to me.
that is a pretty big watch
Great another reason to move to Europe. The first is for the bridges. I like driving back and forth over bridges and then getting out and then walking back and forth on them too.
Hes a foot taller? Are you on a stool?
Isn't the forced upgrade from standard to digital television, that congress enacted awhile ago, supposed to be rolling out next year?
@biobob: SONY doesn't supply over the air TV services, they can't just magically invent this in the US. Sony has to partner with suppliers in Europe and Japan to do these things.
@SpishackCola:
Wait, is the change is supposed to be analog to digital? I just know that the change it supposed to be happening soon, unless someone moved for a repeal already or something.
@droptop: I totally agree with Crecente's shirts being funny. He is the cliffy b of the blogging world when it comes to fashion.
@Zyzex: Lol, you have no idea how dated Britain is. Bullet trains? Our trains are older then those in Kazakhstan. =\
But we demand true widescreen! I mean, wait, no, I live in the US, I should get more for less money and I should always get it first!
Seriously, though, this is the first thing that makes me excited about the digital switch. Let's roll it out. This sounds awesome.
@Zyzex:
Its all about the geographical size. Rollouts in smaller sq.mile countries is a much easier accomplishment. People always complain about how far behind the US is to those small island countries, well duh, one length of cable from Maine to California could wire their whole damn nation.
As for the wireless service, same thing, hundreds of antennas instead of 10s of thousands.
Be thankful that we have alot of space and aren't stacked on on top of each other like some of these advanced nations...
2009 is the new FCC deadline
I think we're all cool with paying 5-10 bucks a month for DVR or Tivo or whatever. This is def. not something I wanted for my PS3, especially since it would necessitate getting an even bigger hard drive to be able to store the amount of tv I watch.
I might be tempted to rig an import up to work with a DTV tuner. I just don't want to be totally sued by the FCC. ^^
@biobob:
You need content for it. A DVR without content is just a shiny, black box. ^^
@SpishackCola:
I think Feb 2009 is the 'finishing date'. It's possible the device could release before that, since 2008 will be the *transition year.
Wow...Tivo can figure it out but Sony cannot. Great work Sony, glad to see you're so on the ball.
IT'S THE BIRD SHIRT!!! RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!
DVR = my $30 TV tuner card
TV on PSP? I don't get it. $200 for a 4 inch TV? How about some good games?
so then what are you standing on, the picture make you look the same height.
you know, i saw this coming.... the dvr and psp download system rely on a more standard network setup, something we in this country don't have in favor of a less monopolistic approach. sure standards help, but they still won't fix all the problems. that being said, i don't know what i would recommend to fix it. i like the way some countries in the EU have done things in these areas, but they also have a history of geographic size that aided and continues to aid them in these areas. we are just too big of a country to instantly change over to a similar system. also our government and corporations are getting pretty corrupt to want to play nice.
@Mongoosekun:
Ah, thanks for the info on that Mongoose! Guess that gives me about a year after graduating to save up for a nice digital enabled television.
Hey Crecente...way to wear the Hyrule Shield to a Sony Press Conference...that's why he had such a stone face...
Nice shirt Crecente.
Get to work on the games please.
I might actually buy a PS3 if you do this. I already have 4 Comcast DVR's, 2 Media Center PC's, and 2 Tivos. I don't need another DVR much less a DVR game system.
This is niche market at best.
@Crecente
You know, Im starting to think you and Vamp (MGS¤) were seperated at birth...
how about more downloadable content in general... The current amount is pretty sad compared to the xbox live
That watch reminded me of a joke:
What's the difference between a pick-pocket and a peeping tom?
A pick-pocket snatches watches. . .
"The problem with the DVR is that the U.S. doesn't have terrestrial digital television yet" <- Ummm... wow, then how am I getting my terrestrial DTV? *hides magic wand*
But seriously, folks... if you look at demographics, how many people with PS3s live in Smallville? If you live within 50 miles of any major metro area, and pay $50-$100 for a decent roof antenna (or even a little teeny indoor antenna in some cases), you'll get terrestrial DTV here. Roll this bad boy out, don't lose the revenue!
Hair vs. no-hair: FIGHT!
That's not Crecente.
That's an impostor who wears funny shirt.
I think we should take up a collection and buy Crescente a new shirt. Of course everyone now recognizes who he is when he wears it but don't you think he'd look good in something like this--
[www.bountee.com]
Is the market different in Europe? I imagine most DVR users already have their box from their cable/sat company and really don't need this . . . at all. Maybe we can get some non-FPS games instead?
@rentahero1:
Some markets are lucky to have a single station that will do a broadcast just for the news. Are you just going to sell the device to 1/32 of the country in the mean time and update the device later for quirks? =)
I think you'd be better off arguing for a cablecard or DTV tuner. Unless you think DTV = DTTV. Hardly anyone in the US has a ATSC tuner even if they have an 'HDTV'. I just got back in from the fun 108F weather so maybe I misread while seeing dancing animals on my desk... water... water...
[en.wikipedia.org]
[en.wikipedia.org]
WTF? the us doesnt have terrestrial HDTV? what is he smoking? why on earth would they be selling a console that goes up to 1080p for HDTVs if people werent using HDTVs here. US is switching entirely from analog over the air to digital in a year.
I watch ATSC HDTV over the air every night. All all primetime shows on the major networks are in HD.
That shirt is all sorts of awesome Crecente!
Sony definitely needs to find a new way to spin this, since the entire US *does* have terestrial digital television. It was required that all broadcasters in the country go digital by back in May, 2002. A few stations got delays allowed back then, but by now all stations in the country are broadcasting digital. The switchover in 2008 is not to turn on digital, but to turn off analogue.
I just find it funny how all you americans are complaining about being left out all the time. You obviously have no idea what it's like to live in Europe.
That Crecente, something tells me he's a hit with the ladies.
I'm digging the screaming chicken shirt.
so what if next year Sony starts up a division to bring on-demand content over the airwaves to North American subscribers? or Sky comes here and does it but with backing and funding from Sony...
wouldn't that be funny?
i mean if things went well in Europe, wouldn't that be a smart thing to do?
omg crecente you hippy. now i know for sure who was behing the "smoking of naughty drugs" that eurogamer was talking about
ontopic: it would have been cool if we got this stuff, but its not like the end of the world. there are plenttyyy of other DVR alternatives out there
@superHOOKIE: i think you meant to say clock.
could be that Phil has little girl arms to match his little girl head and could be a normal watch.
Naaaaaa... Flavor Flav is back in the house!
@Zyzex:
You can blame the air industry, the auto industry, and the US government that caters to them for the almost total lack of effective train service in most of the United States.
According to Wired Magazine, Texas was planning to build a high speed train network between all of its major cities, but then Southwest airlines started whining and pulling strings. Then *poof* sorry consumers/taxpayers.
Is it just me or does Crecentes shirt remind you a little of Dupree's best man shirt in "You, Me and Dupree"? Now he just needs the best man lighting bolt logo on the collar.
Once again the US gets screwed because we can't get with the times quick enough (digital). Oh well at least we will have the PSP slim...woopeee
I already have a DVR, A Myth TV box in the basement hooked up to a tuner card with my old Xbox serving the content to the TV. More games for the PS3 would be nice...
i like how everyone says "i already have this, i already have that, etc etc etc"
well, the average american has basic cable, an SDTV, and some mediocre speeds on their DSL or ccable modem, and a computer thats a few years old, filled with spyware and a shared video card. so this kind of stuff could be pretty usefull for alot of people
All this sounds nice and whatnot... But at he moment, I would rather be playing games on the damn thing. I have a Comcast DVR, And a Media Center PC, a-and...a DVD recorder. I don't want anything else that has to do with TV shows on my PS3. Just gaming goodness.
Oh. I also don't want my PS3 collecting dust.
I think DirecTV and Dish Network would beg to differ on that point. Shit, DirecTV uses nearly the same technology platform that Sky does.
@biobob: Mmmmmm. Hassenpfeffer.
@
