Edge of Twilight Channels Planescape

Edge of Twilight is a 3rd person action adventure game for the 360 and PC that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that combines steampunk and alternative fantasy elements to create something vaguely reminiscent of something out of the Planescape D&D universe. You might remember the name from Planescape: Torment, the best D&D computer game ever created no matter what you or anyone else says. For more on the story and setting, visit Edge of Twilight.com, which really drives home the whole Planescape feel of the title. Otherwise check out these beautiful first screenshots of a game that I will be paying a great deal of attention to in the coming months.

  • This seems like a good a time as any to mention my 360 finally died today. I blame stranglehold, it was perfect until I played stranglehold.

As for this game, it looks swish, sounds interesting, I hope I have another 360 by the time it comes out.

  • "You might remember the name from Planescape: Torment, the best D&D computer game ever created no matter what you or anyone else says."

    Amen

  • I would argue with your point. Planescape: Torment is not only the best D&D based CRPG ever created, it's the best CRPG game, no matter what platform, background or franchise.

This is a well known fact among right minded people.

  • Sounds cool. The Planescape: Torment universe was really interesting to me, in theory, but I couldn't play the game at all. It posed the same problem as Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale, which is to say the so-called "perspective" gave me vertigo and motion sickness at the same time.

But 3rd-person you say? Sounds good.

@aden.exe: Damnit all to hell, I swear that game will be the death of mine as well, had some weird screen glitches the last two times I've booted into it. It sucks, because I love that game, yet is it worth having a dead Xbox when Halo hits? I'm sure you'll have yours back (assume its under warranty) by mid-October, I'm on 360 #3 and both times it took less than 5 weeks.

Interesting, Ill be keeping an eye on this too. Thanks for the info Mr. Fahey!

  • @Latonone:

Obviously you, Little_Dragon and Mike Fahey haven't played Baldur's Gate 2?

(Well... not that I have played Planescape : Torment...yet. But few games would stand a chance against BG2!)

  • @etho: I thought all those games were 3rd person...

Torment is definitely in my top 5 games evar list. so awesome. the writing had me dumbfounded several times...

  • @DaiMacculate:

    Yea...warranty...it might be slightly void.

I don't care about halo, aslong as I have another one by the time Assassins Creed is out, hopefully one with the new smaller, less prone to dying gpu/cpu.

  • @belger0g:

course i played baldurs gate. 1, 2 and all the expansions O+

    but planescape outshines them all.

  • @little_dragon:

Little Dragon, I concur. The only RPG title that ever came close to that game for me was Fallout 1 & 2. And look what they're doing to that franchise.

  • "You might remember the name from Planescape: Torment, the best game ever created no matter what you or anyone else says."

    FIXED

  • @belger0g:

I replayed baldurs gate 2 about 3-4 times.

Planescape just beat the ass out of it.

    This mean
    Baldur's gate -> awesome game
Planescape torment -> on another level of awesomeness.

  • *crawls out of hole* Planescape? Did someone mention Planescape: Torment? And this is like it? Ooooh... I'll be watching this one, elvish screenshots be damned. "What can change the nature of a man?"
    @Latonone: Check
    @lishi: Double check

  • Planescape is a hard act to follow. I hope you didn't just bury this game with a comparison meme. ;_;

I tried to get a comment from a representative of the Planescape universe, but the character wouldn't give his name. Then he started mumbling something about ladies, barrowed teeth, and morgues. Something about a flaming corpse?

  • @StrikerGold: A miserable little pile of secrets? Damn. Wrong game. Have at you!

  • @StrikerGold: Good job, with that nice one liner you've forced me to play Planescape (agreed on best ever hands down) yet again. I think i'm on 7 or 8 times beaten so far. This does look cool though, and since apparently I still have a 360 that doesnt die on certain games it should be quite entertaining.

  • Planescape!

Oh..well, I still have my stack of pen n paper Planescape stuff.
I stuck with BG 1,2 and Tales of the Sword Coast expansions. Oh, and Icewind Dale I and II.

    God I miss those.

    GO FOR THE EYES BOO!

  • @lishi: Arg I want to play an infinty engine so bad now....

  • I call for a moratorium on the term 'steampunk.'

  • @Chaos_Bringer: I've beat that game like 8, 9, or 10 times myself.

Planescape: Torment is hands down the best RPG made in my humble opinion. I've quoted that game in philosophy papers at college and gotten A's.

The game is so deep its on another level, I would consider this game to be true 'art' if you believe that games can be art.

  • @Morgoth:

It would be cool if someone started porting classic PC titles to modern consoles, but there are so many legal and financial issues to over come before you write any code.

  • Image of dv8godd dv8godd at 01:36 PM on 09/11/07 *

@Ovenall: Out of curiosity... why? Additionally, what adjectives would you suggest that convey the same meaning?

  • @FrigidAir44: Yeah, I remember when I first read about Roger Ebert's 'games will never be art' article and I just couldn't stop thinking "Someone get this man a copy of Planescape: Torment, STAT!"

  • Even the architecture from the screens is reminiscent of Planescape,I was so glad when NWN 2 introduced a bit of it in the backstory but now a game that's maybe tied to it.Clean up in aisle 5.

  • My god planescape has so totaly hijacked these comments its unbelievable.. and a testament to its greatness.

I'd love to crank that resolution up though. 640 really is starting to hurt my eyes.

  • @PlanHex: Also: is it just me or does the background music sound alot like [www.blackmesasource.com] <- this mod's theme song?

    PS: Need edit button :(

  • No date at all? Sounds awesome though.

  • All the infinity engine games defined what I came to expect from a great game, the gorgeous artwork, enchanting music, dialogue I remember to this day. I still own them all, and every now and them take them out and look at the boxes with a tear in my eye.
    Planescape was the greatest.

Although. I think Bioshock may be just about worthy to sit alongside them. maybe. But I haven't finished it yet. So I'm not sure.

This game? I guess we're just going to have to wait and see.

  • Ah - always nice to see props for the not-appreciated-nearly-enough Planescape Torment. I have that game sitting here waiting a replay someday. I'm sure the passage of time will dull the experience some (if only due to the graphics). I'll keep an eye on this new game as well.

  • @Latonone:

    still offtopic to the newspost.

but people interested in playing planescape outside the fullscreen 640 resolution..

you can apperantly change the torment.ini and where it says fullscreen=1 make that 0

ow and edge of twilight is great ;)

  • @Latonone:

and play it in a window thus having easier on the eye graphics :)

  • I'm looking at the website. Looking... looking... where are you seeing the relationship to the Planescape universe?

I want a new Planescape game as much as the next man, but deluding yourself will only lead to disappointment.

  • @belger0g: I have played BG2 and even though it was an absolutely awesome game, PST was way more awesome. It was like pure awesomeness packed in awesome with a good helping of awesome. That's how awesome it was. And still is. Just awesome.

  • lets hope these aussie developers can pull this off

  • Planescape: Torment? I'm not sure that it was the best RPG ever, but it definitely had the best story that I have ever seen in a game.

  • However, the storyline and the world look nothing like Torment. They remind me more of a Final Fantasy title (not that's it's a bad thing, just not as sophisticated as Planescape) Then again, the music sounds great.

BTW How about a remake of Planescape: Torment? RPGs nowadays are more story-based than gameplay-based nowadays and much more focused on things like the characters.

  • How about starting a thread in Planescape's memory.

What do YOU guys think changes the nature of a man? (or woman?)

  • Let's start a thread - just in Planescape's memory.

What do YOU guys think changes the nature of a man? (or woman)

  • Ahh, it's good to hear some well deserved loving for Planescape. I only finished it last year and was swept away by what I would regard as the most compulsive and well crafted storyline, dialogue and characters I've ever witnessed. And not just in a game.

What can change the nature of a gamer? Planescape: Torment.

  • I don't normally go in for the romance bit, but Planescape is the only game I've seen that has had a compelling romantic interest in it that really made me feel empathy for the characters. If you chose one, who did you choose? The succubus or the tiefling (I can't remember their names, been a while)

  • Bit of a late response... but here goes. I *wanted* Annah (she was fiesty, haha) but I didn't know you could 'get' with either of them. Flirting with Annah and Fall-from-Grace was surprisingly fun and you felt oddly attracted to them. Makes me wonder if the game could be enjoyed as equally were you a female...
