As gamers, we see completely virtual male and female characters every day and it seems more or less normal to us. But aside from the obvious (boobies), what distinctions imply to our unconscious that a man a man and woman a woman? This video approaches this topic, though with the background argument that the Golden Ratio creates beauty (you've heard about the Golden Ratio before with the music of Zelda). It's worth a watch if you ever wanted to learn more about the face or fantasize about Natalie Portman as a guy.

You stole the link from me. :(
That screen capture gave me a headache from all the jumping around. Nothing too special though, most art people could tell you the same thing.
It's like being in art school all over again.
natalie portman is so hot.
It'd be fun to see how the female grid fits over Aishwarya Rai. Time to do some googling...
Technically this post should be titled "Fun With Gimp"... but I suppose that's a different article entirely (on fleshbot, maybe?).
See learning something everyday doesnt hurt....the golden ratio is a pretty crazy cool thing in and of itself. That the Greeks even knew about it-nifty. Also I dont know if anyone ever saw that news report about scientist finding a compass/greek ship navigator for its naval vessels, they were saying that the tech for that is far beyond what the Greeks should have been able to do. And something we cant re-create as of right now. The Ancient world has too many dam mysteries, all we now have to do is just convince the Egypt govt. to allow some archaeologists to dig underneath the Sphinx and excavate the empty rooms underneath it. I say information about Atlantis is down there. But enough of my rambling, had to throw my two pence in. Peace out.
I actually found that fascinating. Cheers for the vid.
Between Lindsay Lohan's arrest and the veritable cornucopia of sports scandals, I think this will undoubtedly be the most informative blog post I read all week. Much appreciated.
@NOKS415: Its a trap!
No wonder you never see David Beckham and Natalie Portman in the same room together!
Errr, that guide kinda sucked. When he distorts the mask he doesn't keep the ratio at all. Kinda pointless really. Also the smudge tool usage made me want to leap through the screen and take his computer away from him. That was just BAD.
interesting. and GIMP FTW!
This is one of the reasons I love Kotaku.
that really wasn't gaming related. but it was interesting and facinating. Especially to me as an artist.
Thank you, Kotaku

oh yeah. as for his shoddy tech usage... I think he achieved what he wanted: he was looking for a fast, quick way of showing the differences. and how simple it is to make a change. The smudge, liquify and other tools WERE jsut that: quick. If the person knew what they were doing with an editing program, then they'd know other and better tools to use. but if Joe average looked at that and wanted to play with it, not only did he provide them with a limk to a free program, but he showed them a fast way to do it too.
They'll probaby get bored in 20 minutes, turn someone's mother into a guy, print it out, get a few laughs, then forget about it.
eep! forgive the double post! it didn't say the first one sent. then I decided to add something else. Sorry!!
SquareEnix should look into this.
Was already aware of this, my face apparently matches the golden ratio mask - even in the side view with the exception of my smaller ears... almost perfect :(
As someone probably already noted: GIMP ain't Photoshop.
To everyone complaining about this being called "Fun with Photoshop" when he's using GIMP: He uses Photoshop at the end. WTFV before commenting next time.
i'd say that video was spastic, but i don't want to have to recall my comment.

@Psudonym:
What's wrong with girl liking a guy with softer features?
I've heard of the Goden Ratio before. It's really intresting. Too bad my face doesn't fit with it.
@TheDollHouse:
*shrugs* They're not really bad about it, I'm just poking fun at them for their vast legion of girly men.
While I don't know exactly why this appeared on Kotaku, I don't object to its appearance =D Thank you for this informational video... I've been trying to find out gender identify through facial features for a while now =D
I'm not touching GIMP with a 10 feet pole until they fix that UI.
The video was nice though :)
The information was interesting, but the narrator was a tool. Sounded like he was high the whole time. "Pat People?" Come on.
Beauty in the eye of the beholder my ass
How is this news?
Ive always wanted to say that.
I didn't realize Kotaku was specifically a news site. :)
Doesn't the Golden Ratio apply to almost the entire Human body? Like the arms in comparison to the legs? I thought I read it in a book once, Angels and Demons I think it was.
(To Altima, obviously.)
very enlightening.
reminded me of the movie Pi
Speaking of the Golden Ratio, 1.618 by BT is a very cool song (and video).

@jihadjoe343: Yeap. Its a handy thing to remember when doing environments and whatnot too.
@AroundTheFur: A sequel to Pi based around Phi could actually be pretty interesting.
More amazing than the content of the video is that someone actually uses Gimp for photo editting.
(what else does it do?)
That's really interesting. Strange...but good.
So the jaw is the key? I guess I don't look like a girl after all. This video is very reassuring!
