How could The Onion plus Penny Arcade not result in an hilarious expletive-filled meeting of the creative minds, loaded with brilliantly cynical jabs at the gaming industry? When it's The Onion AV Club, the serious, more arts enlightened side of The Onion. Its readership is smug about its interviews, worrying of a Kotaku slobs invasion of the AV Club snobs commenting section.
Anyway, Penny Arcade creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik are just regular slobs like you and me, just that they have a massive following of daily readers, lots of well-earned cash in the bank, their own video game expo and a game in development. They talk to The Onion about everything—the PA history, the collaborative process and their upcoming adventure title Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness.
A good read. And, good God, do I love that photo.

That photo is pure gold on so many levels.
@theflux: Yeah I like how the PSP's umd slot is open, ahahah!
I think my favorite aspect has to be that one of them looks so totally spastic and the other -- while looking spastic -- has such a dedicated, "I'm focusing here" kind of facial expression.
When I first saw that photo I was at work and busted out laughing. It really couldn't be anymore appropriate.
Hey!! They're doing it wrong!
They can use that pic for videogame ads or something. (You know that ad, where the kid is playing some random space shooter complete with blips and such).
Oh and be ready for the deluge of comments that spwe PA hate and "they r suxxosr! Hcks!"
I'm amazed this talkback isnt already full of anti PA comments. it always seems like Kotaku fanbase just LOVES to hate on PA for no reason
Why? PA is brilliant most of the time. I didn't find it very funny in the early years (like... early early) but it has only gotten better.
The picture is remniscent of those game ads where the models have no idea what theyre doing but do their best to be XTREEEEMEE. Speaking of extremeness, there is a badical link to the wiki on song of the sorcelator. It is just hilarious.
Maybe THIS is why they're hated by the kotaku readership:

@bobtheduck: Are you so paranoid to think that most of the people here are such blind fanboys?
That photo springs Tenacious D associations in my mind. Oh, and there's an interview with that... almost forgot that
@Neon:
Not just PA but everything for that matter. I had no idea bitching about everything was the rage these days...Oh you think some people here in Kotaku is bad? Try reading the tripe in Joystiq! Damn it also made me illiterate! No joke!
Haha, they own and that photo owns...
And to the people bitching about bitching, If people didn't accept so much of the crap that the industry spews at us, maybe there would be less to bitch about.
Nah.
@Psychotext:
Are you so insightful to notice that most of the people here are such blind fanboys?
Fixed up that comment for ya.
heh, and the other one is holding the 360 controller backwards lol
@bobtheduck: No Bob, I seriously doubt that the majority of Kotaku readers would be offended by that based on the comments that come up when stories about Sony are posted.
plz dont tell me that the bald guy is one of the writers
if he is, i feel like i have been wronged so badly bc both characters have hair so wtf ... i spent so many hours on these comics
i think PA is really really funny. Like, old Simpsons funny.
@miroku: the beautiful china doll with a head like a polished pearl is Jerry Holkins, who writes under the pseudonym "Tycho Brahe." As has been explained on numerous occasions the characters of Penny Arcade were not created as real world avatars (tm!) of Penny Arcade's sinister prose and art dread lords. They just ended up taking on the same attitudes (albeit, oftentimes a bit more exaggerated) as the lieges of enlightened darkness, and their faux-noms became that of the characters.
@miroku: The bald one is "Gabe" and the skinny one is "Tycho". And yes, it is a great picture. As a long-time PA reader, I do have to admit that most of what they do is pretty freaking hilarious.
@miroku: WHY AM I SO BALD
@onrampofframp: You got them mixed up. Or some sinister joke had begun when your "Tycho" signed my book and my sketch of Dr. Raven Darktalon Blood "Gabe."
Zamnation is right. From random the PAX videos I've seen and a Gamespot video interview with Jerry, I can confidently say that the bald one is Jerry Holkins (Tycho) and the skinny one is Mike Krahulik (Gabe).
In the world of video games they are a voice of reason and sanity in a sea of CACODEMONS! I am glad they exist.
@Qwizatblah: Huzzah, my good fellow, Huzzah. You are quite right.
@miroku:
Hahaha! I also spewed my drink out reading that!
Well, it'd suck if they drew themselves as balding or what wouldn't it? I know I would draw myself right. And by right I mean I'd look like Brad Pitt and have cannons for arms.
Their humor is a killer though.
Sorry, after all these years I still don't understand the collective boner for these guys and their comics.
@Zamnation:
There is no 'Mike' or 'Jerry' for that matter. They're really just fictional characters created by EA marketing skunkworks fronted by Robert Khoo.
*yawns* Ah, well.
WHY I AM SO BALD
tycho's vast vocabulary makes more sense now
love them. Tycho's writing is brilliant.
@cactaur:
He must have some amazing stories.
Ewww, AV club, aka the boring part of the Onion.
Onion and PA are both gold. I love these guys.
@bobtheduck: wha? i remember thinking that comic was funny, especiallly since its following the one where they were gonna make thousands spotting unsold PS3's.
*sigh* I love those guys. Livin' the dream.
@miroku
Because having a bald head somehow makes you a repository of obscure words?
