The Australian Defence Force is in a bit of a pickle. The current government likes to send Aussie troops to such exotic, far-flung locations as Iraq and Afghanistan. Problem is, Australians don't want to go. Don't even want to join the army. Can't be arsed. So they've got a manpower shortage, which they're trying to address by offering cheap flash games on the ADF's recruitment page. Can't fault the logic in that one. I know every time I play a fun little sniper minigame on my PC the very next thing I want to do is get sent to the desert to get shot at by some mad Afghani with an AK.

They could've at least made an effort like AA.
I knew about the print ads, but a game? Oh man...
This is something to be ashamed for...like AA

Thank-you for making my day mr. Plunkett.
I thought the Federal Government put aside one or two billion dollars to get recruitment levels up. Which means we should be getting epic shooters with stories, not Flash games.
"-to get shot at by some mad Afghani with an AK."
Gasp! RACIST IN THA HOUSE! :P
Flash games? Man, that says it all. Hilarious.
lol god they should give up, if playing counterstrike didn't get me to wan't to join the army a simple flash game isn't going todo it.
They should have spent more money like the American Army and made a full FPS, cause that's totally keeping U.S. troop numbers up... Well, that and the "Stop Loss" program that doesn't let soldiers leave the army.
I joined the Australian Army like a month ago. Seriously...I start in December.
@Zero_: I hope by mad he meant "angry" and not "crazy". If I was an Afghani and a bunch of Australians with guns came marching in I'd probably be pretty angry too.
@RENEG: I hope he did mean crazy.
Byrontendo, congrats on joining the ranks of the best Australians around.
I'M SIGNING UP! Nothing better than getting shot at for johnny boy and DUBYA in Iraq especialy with all them WMD's around, there were WND's weren't there?
I find these kinds of things pretty tasteless.
I don't think being killed or for that matter killing someone would be as much fun in real life.
When aliens start attacking I'll sign up.
@ZERO_: probably talking about the single afgani with an AK not all of them
@rcarydon:
Yep, us Aussie Kotakuites really are a cut above a rest of 'em.
At the shops today I saw a big army recruitment drive. Camo-painted trucks and banners saying "Recruiting now!" and whatnot. There was nobody over there talking to them, and the army guys were just chilling in director's chairs having a chat amongst themselves.
Welcome to the Australian army. So awsome.
I don't really get how war games are supposed to make people want to sign up. What I've learned from Call of Duty is that, if I even put my head up above the sandbags for a moment, a sniper is liable to pop me in the head. Video games probably make the likelyhood of death appear even higher than it actually is on the battlefield (depending on which side you're on), since video games don't allow you to have all your senses in normal working order.
The Aussie Diggers are arguably the most respected troops in the world and I've heard tales of Marines and SAS alike who simply can't believe the shit they get done. That said, I'm still not going to join only to be sent to fight in a war that goes against every fiber of my being.
Crazy what people will admit to.
Man, what a national disgrace.
I wouldn't even have minded if they asked to borrow the America's Army engine or something.
Pretty funny that I just started reading a book called "Blackwater USA". It's about how private militaries are being used to combat the US Army enlistment decline.
Pretty interesting. Not related by much, but still interesting.
@Zero_: Because getting shot by sane people is so much better...
Hey, the Navy flashgames ain't bad, they have a pretty decent version of Battleships :P
@endejas.: Private armies have been used for centuries, dating as far back as the ancient egyptians and such.
Its nothing really new, just that its been put more into the spotlight now with the war in Iraq, and the PMC boom.
@Witzbold: Yep. Mercs have been around for ages.
But the premise of the book (and i haven't gotten far into it yet) is that Blackwater has a huge fighting force (something around 20,000 troops, with a dozen gunships, etc.) and that it's headed by a stern Christian conservative multimillionaire. As well as highlighting how PMC's are seemingly exempt from many US laws as being a middle ground between military and civilian.
It might sound a little leftist, and it probably is. Honestly, I picked it up from Costco while I was getting HP7.
@endejas.: The whole blackwater thing is a lot deeper than you think.
Anyways enjoy the book.
But theres a lot of others out there, and dont just let the book on blackwater alone build your image of the PMCs and such. :)
Less widely known is that the Australian Army is making heavier use of VBS2 - the miliary version of Armed Assault.
So is New Zealand, the Canadian Army, the US Marine Corp, US Army Special Forces, and the British Ministry of Defence.
That America's Army game is so infuriating.
The sole reason that game is in existence is to encourage people to go to war and shoot other people.
It's strange that Jack Thompson isn't all over THAT instead of Manhunt.
@TheJordanator: Jack knows hes gonna get his ass handed to him by the army thats why if he tries to go up against the USG. Like most people who try. ;)
Pretty smart people, those Australians, not wanting to be used as cannon fodder in pointless wars (Iraq, Afghanistan).
What is it wth all the blackwater bashing? They're doing a job to help the military in Iraq. So they're run by a multi millionaire, Christian Conservative. *gasp* he was successful in using his college years wisely, and actually had a plan after he got out of hte military! Most people in the military are *gasp* Stern Christian Conservatives. Just because MGS4 has something bad about a PMC mean they are all evilzorz omg111! runz1!11ahhh!!...?
No, they are people like you and me, but who decided to even further extend their service by yet ANOTHER 10 years in the infantry, most being ex-rangers, marines, or sf (delta is the EXACT SAME THING AS SF...in iraq, delta analyzes and is counter terrorism. Alpha is out there and is anti-terrorism to prevent delta needing to work.). *gasp* they are trying to make a democracy. *gasp* maybe we should let the enemy shoot at us, so that you ****ing Europeans realize that it doesn't matter if your enemy is a mindless wave of arabs or a highly specialized british force, if you have a job there, and the job is valid, I would assume that they are trying everything in power to stop it.
Don't go telling me I don't know jack****. I'm not in the military. However, throughout the years I've had everything that sf need to know drilled into my head by my dad (well, the smarts side i think), and the rest told to me my cousins in the marines and rangers, respectively, when I was little. I read up on the rest. I know my **** better than the rest of us civvies.
Blackwater is not evil.
@Witzbold: I know, but what if, one day, a lightbulb blinked on in that desolate wasteland where his brain might once have taken up residence and he grew enough balls to take offence at some REAL hypocrisy. It would be like when Darth Vader kills Palpatine, except instead of one last stab as anakin skywalker, Jack would have one last (first?) stab at doing something respectable.
@MajoShinpan: yeah, the whole Afghani thing, chasing terrorist, was crazy pointless.
Im glad you troll on non-gaming things, too.
