New Rule of Rose Gameplay Footage

There's some new Rule of Rose stuff over on MTV's game site, Overdrive (which runs like complete crap on OSX Firefox), and it's completely without context. Who's talking in the clip with the broom goblins? The subtitles don't seem to correspond with anything. The music is pretty, but extremely repetitive. A lot of it is inappropriate for the variety of scenes it's laid over.

Basic gameplay doesn't seem all that great, or at least not much of an improvement. It could be that combat is not a big part of the game so what we're seeing here is a rare event.

Do pay heed to the character animations in the cutscenes, which look fairly good. I especially liked the way the villain's fingers fluttered when she put her hand on the fat girl's head.

Although it looks like once again, the main character is the blandest in the game. Her expressions are very toned down, and her face and posture are extremely restrained. I'm guessing that player characters are the ones subjected to the greatest amount of committee review, and have all their edges worn smooth by the time they're put onscreen. What a shame.

I believe Rule of Rose comes out next week, and I'll definitely be picking it up. After all, I'm in this for the steampunk lolitas and the fishblimp, not the broom goblins. Or the dog.

  • I don't think anyone else on the planet is as excited for this game as you are, Eliza. Anytime I see a post involving RoR, I know it's yours.

  • That's because all the other Kotakunauts know to stay the fuck away from my RoR scoops.

  • Fell foul of MTV's shit-out-of-luck non-US rule. Couldn't see squat.

  • Ooo - I am! Little girls totally creep me out!

  • BTW: It doesn't like Windows Firefox either (my wife is using my Powerbook while her iBook is broke, so I'm stuck using my work piece of crap Windows laptop).

Anyway - I finally had to soil myself by using Internet Explorer and living in certain fear of being struck down by Internet geeks everywhere - but the videos loaded.

Attack of the killer midget sweepers, a lot of funning, and sad little British schoolgirl chasing butterflies.

Nothing really revealing - load times look a little on the long side (not badly so, like 4 seconds), and then we get creepy quasi-schoolgirl lesbian domination scene that just makes you go "Yeah, they're cute - but creepy".

I want to play it even more now :).

  • What the hell is this game about!? Everytime I see information about it, it looks like some molestation simulator!

  • It looks like a Resident Evil type game with potential. The gameplay looks really slow and the fighting seems horribly clunky and even slower. I was honestly bored watching those videos. I do have hope they'll make it better by release since it seems like something that could be good.

  • I'm ready and waiting for my English version of the game. I'm glad they left the voice acting as is. And also that there are still subtitles. Despite the fact these girls speak English, it can still be damn hard to understand what they're saying sometimes.

  • Oh, also...

Fighting is quite the chore in the game. You can often swing your pipe around [or whatever] and miss enemies, setting yourself up perfectly for a strike from them.

Also, creatures like to attack in packs. There are multiple times where you are seriously SWARMED by enemies and it is no fun at all. It's much better to run than try and kill them.

Aaaaaand... Boss battles are chores... I die 2 to 4 times before beating 'em.

Still, this game is dear to my heart. I enjoy it terribly and have actually had the English version on pre-order for a bit.

  • I'm really looking forward to this too, must pre-order it when I get a moment.

  • The damn video won't let me play it because I'm not Americian. I'm going to sue because their nationalist...dirty bastards.

All the videos I have seen seem to be just cut scenes but they make the game seem pretty creepy. It has that Silent Hill feel to it from the cut scenes. It is a shame it isn't coming out on a plateform I own.

One think that I hope the 360 does more of this generation is get more of these survival horror games like Fatal Frames and this one. I think my girlfriend would enjoy playing these kind of games.

  • such a shame that this is limited to the PS2. the artwork deserves high res love.

  • This game is great except the fighting which is a real chore (especially the siren boss who must be one of the worse boss I've ever battled, never again).

  • "such a shame that this is limited to the PS2. the artwork deserves high res love."

I personally love my survival horror games that look like grainy low-res footage. It just brings more feeling to it, just like wathing movies like Blade Runner from old VHS casette, it's dark, murky, grainy, just perfect to express that kind of a story. Crystal clear HD footage doesn't suit everything.

  • if its a good enough game it will eventually find its way to the Wii for some 480p widescreen goodness.

  • I wouldn't complain about other sites' browser compatibility since Kotaku has broken IE compatibility at least three times in the past few months with text jumping all over the place or just locking up the browser or newsreader.

  • Man, it's amazing the extremely specific impressions some people can get from an obviously out of context video.

  • "In it for Lolitas and the fleshblimp". Man, there's a phrase just crying out for a Latin translation and a neck tattoo.

  • FISHblimp.
