No one seems to think this one has a chance in hell, but I'm going to roll the dice one more time and take a chance on it (the last time I did that, Beautiful Katamari turned out to be one heck of a rumor winner). Indisputedly, table tennis of Rockstar's calibur would rock on the Wii. Even though I (personally) found the controls on the Xbox 360 version to have a bit of a learning curve, the graphics were pretty awesome. So what's keeping it back? David Hinkle from Nintendo Wii Fanboy thinks:
...(T)he game runs on the RAGE engine (which also powers the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV), allowing for some spiffy high-res graphics. Toning them down would turn this already beautiful game into something a lot less appealing to the eye. Of course, that isn't the end of the world, but asking consumers to pay near the same price for it on the Wii with sub-par graphics and new controls might be a problem.
I say, technology-schmology. Rockstar can figure it out, and even if they can't, it doesn't mean that ping pong isn't in the Wii's not-too-distant future.
Rumor Rockstat Bringing Table Tennis to the Wii [Nintendo Wii Fanboy]

Comments
personally, after playing wii tennis, i dont think it'd be that great- i dont know if the controls would be precise enough.
to me, it seems that the best uses of the wii mote so far have not been the games that try to emulate an actual activity exactly, but the ones that just try to focus on fun controls.
i agree with above. the precision needed to make this the "table tennis simulator" it kinda is just ain't there.
Umm rockstar.....wheres my GTA guys? I know, I know, table tennis on wii! perfect match right?
Well yeah, but hell i wanna be able to walk around liberty city banging hookers with my wii mote. Graphical power my ass! idc honestly if it wont look great.
The source to your source [Nintendo Fan Boy] went to a crappy Nintendo blog [Go Nintendo], and their source went to an even crappier one [Nintendo-Revolution], then their source went to IGN, and it was on a linked to a podcast, and the dialogue within the podcast was just jokingly saying it would come to Wii, based on a false story that came from NeoGaf.
I'm sure it could work - but would they have to use the controller as a paddle itself, or can we have this game with more normal controls and a little added "butter" through motion sensing? Either way, Rockstar working on Wii more and more is what I like to hear.
If they don't do it someone else will do something similar and they'll miss out so I'd suggest they take the opportunity and do it.
Yes, take a good game, butcher it and put it on the Wii with broken Wiimote controls, how could that possibly end bad?
I have been wanting this game on the PS3 for a long time.
Well at least this port is from another next gen console, even though it would be better if they focus on making a sequel to put on the Wii. Also
Yeah, like I totally need my table tennis players to have 1 billion polygons, running at 1080X resolution for me to have a good time. Yeah.
Does anybody actually play ping pong for the graphics?
@jackal888:
Rumble is essential in this game and without it the game would be a frustrating mess.
@hass: That's because Wii Tennis just gives it to you - move it up or left a bit, hit the ball.
Table Tennis (can we please just call it ping pong) is up close, and can have the paddle mimic the Wiimote.
Wii already has ping pong.
Go play WiiPlay, its there.
Who cares about graphics for a ping-pong game? As long as the controls are good enough, I don't see any problem.
@iameleveneight:
The one in WiiPlay is pretty lame. All you do is move the paddle to the ball instead of actually hitting it. The computer does the hitting for you. Also, the table area is so small that its' way too easy to move your pointer off the screen, leaving a motionless paddle on the screen while your opponent hits the ball back and you're trying to find your way back onto the screen. It's a lot more frustrating than fun.
I agree with the others that for a game like this, graphics don't matter that much when you're actually playing the game. Sure, it'd be nice to have the killer graphics in the 360 version but I'd gladly take a port on the Wii that has crappier graphics but uses the Wiimote.
I think Wii Sport Tennis was pretty good, though many people don't like it but those people fail to realize that Wii Sports just simply demonstrates how the Wiimote works out.(It's not a serious advantage of the controller) So if Rockstar decides to make a Tennis game for the Wii, it would be very interesting and I am sure they can get the control scheme to work very well.
@ctoa23:
that was so hilarious.
I dunno about the whole wii thing, though, if everybody was in consensus about the awesome preciseness of the controls when it came out (never gonna happen), then it would be rentable, but nah.
Graphics? Graphics shmaphics, like technology shmology up there in Kim's post. Call me brainwashed by the big N, but graphics shouldn't be the dealbreaker when it comes to good games. I like Super Paper Mario's art style (umm paper i guess)just as much as I like Gears' crazy graphics (as my friend put it: BLOOMBLOOMBLOOM! I can imagine the devs..."hey i got a 1337 idea for graphics in gears, let's throw tons and tons of BLOOM! BLOOM!1!111LOLLERSKATES!!!12111")
Plus, who needs ping pong with graphics? we wii owners need precise controls, not hey, i brought the putter up 4 seconds ago and it hasn't even come upWHAT THE HELL? HOW CAN A PUTT GO THAT FAR IF I DIDN'T EVEN HIT IT?
So if this runs on the same engine as GTA4 and they manage to port said engine to the Wii... [cue mysterious music]
Just call it Table Tennis Stories and people will accept seemingly-reduced graphics.
Didn't we confirm that Nintendo had gotten into Rockstar and either offered them cash or incentives for support for the Wii? I mean, I don't call one meager PS2/Wii title (Manhunt 2) to be what I call much of a support for the system. And unless they do have some magical plan to bring out some GTA for the system, I can only imagine that this rumor could very well be true. I mean, seems like a natural fit right? Ping pong plus wiimote?
If they design it from the ground up for the Wii then it'll probably be fine, but if they just port the 360 version it'll suck
WTF its a ping pong sim, I hardly think graphics are that important.
PORT!!
I agree with the general tone of this thread. I don't see why the automatic response to "can you make this game for the wii" is "welllll, it won't look as pretty." Fair enough, but why is that the first thing that comes up.
Why is it that these comments always devolve into graphics threads in places like this? What ever happened to the important thing...gameplay?
Anyway, I played the 360 version and it was pretty cool. Adding some wii-remote and nunchuck action would be pretty cool. I could care less about the graphics. Just as long as it's playable and fun, which it should be. Add in some online play and you have a winner.
@goehle:
Because at the moment all the nintendo fanboys are doing is trying to justify their purchase of the console with limited graphical prowess.
If the wii had both graphical power and intuitive controls the whole argument of 'graphics arent important' would be out the window entirely. But because they dont have a choice they have to resort to it.
As for me, after playing the 360 version of table tennis It'll be hard pressed trying to convince me to play a dumbed down version of the game, with possibly limited AI or physics and with visuals that look like my dogs breakfast.
Make of that what you will.
Rock on, Rockstar! I like the 360 version, and if it's worked on correctly, I think it will be great for the Wii.
Also thanks for saying what I was thinking, Darkness. :-)
LOL. If graphics don't matter then we don't need a new game. Pong's already available, it's been out for almost 30 years...
We won't be able to see the sweat and realistic player clothing on the Wii.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111111
I wouldn't be surprised. Reggie keeps mentioning that they are in talks with rockstar and take two.
Are you people seriously that uptight over graphics that something as simple as TABLE TENNIS needs to be ultra realistic for you to consider enjoyable???
There's no way in hell this would work. If you were actually to try to move and swing at the same time with one hand swinging instead of pressing a button at the speed this game played? With Tennis it could work if that were ever to be made into a fully fledged game but Ping Pong? I don't buy it.
YCS
I can see this working very well as a Wii Tennis junky. From reading the responses that disagree, I question their familiarity with Wii Tennis, and their understanding of the degree of control that's actually possible.
You can essentially perform every shot available to you in real tennis, with just a small amount of "re-learning" the Wii swing methodology as opposed to a real tennis swing. You can swing on 6 axis to affect the trajectory of your return. Rolling your wrist a direction during your swing evokes a spin, while varying the time of impact dictates the ball's direction - left or right.
It's all there, everything you can do in Rockstar's Ping Pong is already achievable in Wii Tennis provided you have mastered all of the return techniques.
There is no reason why simply adding a nunchuck for character movement would be impossible. All that's needed is the analog stick.
I play about an hour of Wii Tennis a night in training mode and matches since the system's launch. I can't get out to play real tennis as much as I'd like to anymore, and this has filled in GREAT as a substitute. I am crossing my fingers for Rockstar's Ping Pong now...
anyway, the 360 version is very good as well

table tennis on wii= new addiction
So the argument against it partly deals with the cost. That's easy - make it a budget title, as it has already debuted at full price on a more graphically powerful console.
Add decent Wii remote functionality - and I mean decent, not half-hearted, and it'd easily feel at home.
My impression of Wii tennis is that it is a very decent simulation of tennis, and the Wii remote does a great job in allowing one to duplicate most actions in real tennis. You can lob, you can smash, you can cause backspin, you can cause frontspin, you can even create impressive English so that the ball actually curves. This should come as no surprise, since the Wii uses accelerometers to actually measure your actions. I am very pleased as to how real Wii tennis plays.
But, so does Wii Sports golf, Wii Sports baseball, and even Wii Sports bowling. All allow one to use wrist and arm actions to enhance the response. The manual does not do these games justice. Wii pitching uses actual wrist actions for cureballs and screwballs, and hitting requires not just timing but also putting the fat part of the bat on the ball at the right angle (simply timing the pitch will not give it lift).
I admit that I have spent dozens of hours with the Wii Sports games, even though I have a 360 that is currently collecting dust since I got a Wii. If MS (or a licensed 3rd party) gets smart fast, they will introduce a motion-sensing controller for the 360(since they patented one for the PC nearly 15 years ago). Because the PS3 Six-Axis is so awkward to use as a motion-sensing device, maybe Sony will give us a rumble-enabled Boomerang for the PS3. That would give them a decided advantage over MS, which seems to be completely lacking in imagination.
I don't see how badly it could possibly turn out. I mean it's not like its a game with huge vistas and landscapes. Essentially, it can compared to the graphics of a graphically well done fighting game.
