FFXIII: Highly Defined

You know them FFXIII fans - they're ravenous. To keep them at bay for another week, here's a single, somewhat delicious cinematic screenshot (click for a larger version). While they're eating it up, back away slowly. Try to avoid making any sudden movements.

  • Damn that is beautiful. CG or not, still... Incredible.

  • amazing.

  • Looks nice..but still the same boring character & weapon design though.. Come on people!! come up with something original!

  • i refuse to play another final fantasy until they go back to 2D

  • stunning. I'd like to see it animated

  • I was almost sold into getting a PS3 when i saw this, but then i actually read that it was a CG shot and my excitement plummeted like a jet airliner over the pacific ocean.

So as of 2/19/07 at 4:03 AM EST, i still have yet been convinced that the PS3 is worth getting.

  • Great shot, wonder if the gameplay will match the graphics?

  • Ditto, it might be CG, but dang does it look nice. The High-res version... I'd hit it.

  • thats uummm thats insane detail if anything warrants a $60 game it's the effort that went into that still

  • Stop calling these shots "CG". Call them pre-rendered. "PR" I guess if you want a shorthand.

  • Same boring character design I can understand, but same boring weapon design? Really? Sure, FF8 had a gun/sword combo (that worked very differently), but are there a bunch of others out there?

ArmyofJuan: Have you seen the gameplay shots that are out?

  • It's as realtime as KILLZONE and Tekken 6 footage from E3 2005

Realtime on 10.000 processor core supercomputers....

  • enough to wet some appetites but still need shots from actual gameplay...

  • "ArmyofJuan: Have you seen the gameplay shots that are out?"

I'v seen very few other than like...the three that were released at..06's E3? But i think even THOSE shots were pre-rendered as well.

  • Yeah, it's nice, and should I buy a PS3 I would expect this, but we've all seen nice prerendered cutscenes before. I don't want Final Fantasy: The Movie: The Video Game.

ArmyOfJuan: Yeah, the gameplay footage/screenshots from before were "target renders" like the Motorstorm and Killzone ones.

  • Hmm, why don't they make one of those Janken games with pre rendered girls like that? *drools* Hehe sorry, had one of those ecchi moments there :$ But nee way, promoting games with screen showing graphics that won't be real for a couple of years non pre rendered is kinda lame but everybody does it so you can't really flame it without flaming something you like (like that orgasm creating wonderful increadible mega nice Halo 3 trailer that's on marketplace, OMG I watched it 50 times just to dream about when graphics are going to look like that in game). Even though I feel like FF has had its prime and I kinda lost interest, it's like so 90's ;P MGS might be wicked though... O_o

  • That screenshot alone is FUCKING BEAUTIFUL ; ;

    RAVENOUS indeed, sir, ravenous IN-DEED.

    *spasms*

  • ............guess the gender, win a prize?

  • I'll play FF again when it get's over the manboy syndrome it has had going on. Restore the game to the excellence that was achieved in FF6, and I'll buy a PS3 for it.

  • Very nice indeed, As Always Square sets the bar for Visual Excellence.

  • They don't claim these are gameplay, so it's a bit churlish to complain that it's obviously not (or, alternatively, a bit stupid to imagine that it might be). I mean with these games, cutscenes are a major part of it, right?

And yes, he (or she? who cares anyway?) looks hot as hell. :)

  • Well, I was thinking of the screenshots that show a battle interface. If those are pre-rendered too, that would be a bit... annoying.

  • Takeo:

Hate to break it to you, man.us But the Halo 3 trailer was real time. The graphics will look like that.

  • FF has gameplay?

  • Yeh Backing up Marasai, the all Halo 3 footage shown so far has been running on the engine. Although the alpha version of the game doesnt look quite as good, but it is Alpha.

  • Marasai, if you're referring to that Halo 3 trailer (ESPN TV ad) on the battlefield, that was pre-rendered by Digital Domain and not real-time.

As for this pic... umm... generic high-quality render from Square for movies. Seriously, is that a male or a female? Final Androgyny XIII: Gender Bender, anyone?

  • I was referring to the Halo 3 trailer fomr E3. The one that was ingame. Not the one that they told us weeks beforehand would only be pre rendered.

  • So do these shots of pre-rendered videos actually convince people to buy the game? Silly FF fans. Screenshots of FF gameplay seem to be pretty rare... I guess the actual game is an afterthought.

  • munch munch munch... mmph.. mmm yum. Can I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this food down?

  • Welcome to the Uncanny Valley, population: creepy rubbery shiny plastic-y chick.

    I'll pass, thanks.

  • That character isn't a man or a woman- it's both!

  • I wonder how many graphic whore heart will break if this was suddenly scrapped on the ps3 and announced for the Wii. Ouch.

    Just throwing it out there...

  • I can't wait for FFXIII myself and it would be the only reason that I need to buy a ps3.

I don't care about the graphics though like most of the people do. For all that I care, they could be ps2 looking and I would be sold.

People thinks too much about graphics nowadays, gameplay is everything.

  • "So do these shots of pre-rendered videos actually convince people to buy the game? Silly FF fans. Screenshots of FF gameplay seem to be pretty rare... I guess the actual game is an afterthought."

Exactly, I'm getting tired of these "awesome" shots of the game cinematics. This has been going on for YEARS. I'll be impressed when the game play graphics match the above mentioned cinematics. This is not just Square I'm talking about either. Most game developers are guilty of this.

  • Dudes... The final fantasy series has had awesome gameplay since 1... With the exception of 2. FFXII had an awesome story and fun gameplay mechanics. FFX as well on both accounts, only the characters in X were a lot less likable. FFXII on the other hand was great all around.

Yes, they are graphics whores. Yes, they push their pre-rendered materials more than they should, but their games always look beautiful compared to whats out at the time, and always has great gameplay to back it up. Granted, RPGs aren't everyone's cup of tea... But they are solid games, usually pretty bug free and flawless in presentation. Why all the haters?

As for the screen shot... If that turns out to be a male, i will cry.

  • Bah. The "haters" are just people looking to put their own spin on things. Knowing they won't ever buy a PS3 till well after this game has come and gone, they throw out the occasional "it sucks" remark.

Frankly, to people that like the post-Tenth Final fantasy style, this game will be everything and more.

To people that sort of like Final Fantasy, this game will rock.

To people who don't like Final Fantasy, this game looks interesting, but meh.

And finally with people who hate all things FF, this game is just more of the same.

  • Well she has nice hair but other than that its hardly informative.

  • Crysis still looks better, and it's confirmed to be realtime. Something tells me it's just CGI, because that how Square Enix rolls.

  • Image of DigitalHero DigitalHero at 09:51 AM on 02/19/07 *

I am currently enjoying FF12 surpisingly since I have been let down with the series after FF10. Square still has skill.

  • I have played and enjoyed FF. I think the recent ones didn't grab me as much and I have missed FF x and later.

I mean by my prev comment that the focus does not seem to be on the game but rather on these images.

I'm all for great graphics but not at the expense of gameplay.

I think Squeenix knows that X people will buy it without thought, Y people will buy it after looking at pretty pictures and Z people will buy after seeing/hearing that it is a great game.

    X>Y>Z

  • listen to Renko]
CG stands for "Computer Generated" all video games are CG.
this is a Pre-rendered shot, which means it's CG that's not generated in real-time by the GPU.

  • To confirm, it's a she with the name/codename/whatever of Lightning.

  • Someone please tell me if that is a boy, girl, man, woman or whatever so that I can tell myself that it would be nice to have sex with her, him or it.

  • FF XII... still not out in the UK. GOD how long have we waited now?

  • Breaking news........beautiful still shots and cut scenes..........gameplay.....back to 2D due to processing power being dedicated to the amazing cut scenes.

  • What is with Square and their feminine looking male characters?

  • Thanks for the new work background.

  • She's 100% female.

  • After reading all the comments I start to wonder, do you really have a hard time telling it's a she or he?
Cause I think she's hot as hell.

And as previously stated, why bash on about that it's pre-rendered?
It is really common to release pre-rendered pics.

  • You are now entering Uncanny Valley, Population: XIII.

Seriously, is it the lack of movement that prevents all of you people from being creeped the hell out by that image (indeterminate gender aside, of course)? Then again, you guys all probably thought Gollum was the Second Coming or somesuch, even though the final output really wasn't all that different from what ILM was able to do with Jar-Jar (certainly the voice wasn't any less annoying...).

  • The only thing i was saying was that since i have yet to see any actual gameplay shots, i havn't been convinced that a PS3 is worth getting.

I mean theres no doubt that the pre-rendered cutscenes are going to look nice, but that alone isnt going to make me rush out and drop 600 bucks on a system if the actual gameplay looks like FF12.5.

  • God that is a good looking screen. I just love to see how far we have come in CG.

  • If that shot is actual gameplay I would actually buy a PS3 for the game. Unfortunately I highly doubt that it is real-time, however if it is, I will take back everything bad I said about the PS3.

If it is pre-rendered CG, then this just reinforces everything about Sony and PS3s deceptive marketing and proves why no one trusts a single thing Sony says anymore.

  • ^ You don't have to worry about taking back anything you've said. Here's a hint: The PS3 can't to HDR rendering with antialiasing. Now look at the pretty picture again and ponder this fact.

Now, som real in-game shots in their original resolution would be nice!

  • @taz
You are wrong about the PS3 not being able to render HDR with antialiasing. It all depends on the game code. It's like Nvidia 6 series cards being able to render HDR with AA on the Source engine, but not with Oblivion (Gamebryo Engine). When the devs learn the architecture more, they will find ways to do things never imagined with it. Hell, look at the things they accomplished with the PS2, HDR and AA will be the least of it.

  • Graphics vs gameplay? Can't we all get along? Last I checked, graphics sorta enabled gameplay. Imagine a sniper rifle game on the 2600, your target would be an undisplayable pixel or an oversized pixel. Not much room for long distance sniper rifle gameplay. Or how about Red vs Blue vs Green vs Purple deathmatch on the Gameboy Monochrome? Harder to do, maybe the player could wear different team logos.

Gameplay based around pimping your character. Buying new outfits for you Sims in "The Sims", is that not enabled by graphics? How about grinding for equipment in World of Warcraft? Does it exist outside of the graphics?

Graphics are not god but graphics enable gameplay. Group hug.

  • ... grinding for equipment in WoW, bad example because loot has stats on it. Ok then, the useless dresses and tuxedoes in WoW. It doesn't actually have any function, it just has form.
