Some of the contents of Microsoft's Fall Update for the 360 are now public knowledge, courtesy of the Official Xbox Mag. Highlight? The 360 gets its very own Virtual Console, with original Xbox games to be added to the Marketplace. The first available games include Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies (wonderful!), Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. Each of those will set you back 1200 Microsoft points (USD$15). Also confirmed for the update is that Europe will finally be getting the video marketplace. So! December 4's the day. Go circle it in your best red pen. In the meantime, feel free to wonder aloud what else will be in store. And how long it'll be until you can download Jet Set Radio Future.

MS put Jetset Radio Future up there and you have a deal.
Oh and Panzer Dragoon too.
That's cool, I hope the old Sega games like Jet Set Radio Future and Shenmue II make it on there at some point, I have US versions of those games that won't run on my PAL 360. :(
Now a Dreamcast VC would be totally awesome...
Hope that's just part of the whole update, because I want my DivX and Xvid support. :|
Not that i've ever used it, but I assume this means no more backwards compatibility updates... afterall they wouldnt want to reduce their ability to make profit >.>
While I applaud the concept, the price is the point: Many of those game scan be had in disc format for under ten dollars U.S. now. They really need to come down on the price. Oh, and now I suppose I really do need the 120gb HDD. Make the awesome stop, just for a bit please...CoD4, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Rock Band, and now virtual games...my wife is going to kill the 360.
Good show, I believe that's check, care to one up anyone sony/nitendo ? heres hoping.
ah shenmue and jet set radio, the glory days of dreamcast *tear*
Yesss! Not as good of an update which would of included Daytona USA with multiplayer on the arcade... but maybe not I'll get to play KOTOR2 at last :).
OMG!This is beyond awesome! I'm guessing one of MS' surprizes for XBL's 2nd anniversary celebration.
That is very intriguing, but yeah. C'mon, Divx.
W00T! I'm excited. I hope Shenmue is on there too for my hubby.
Dammit. I'm already pretty much out of room on my 360's 20 gig HDD...(Curse you FFXI!) Now I HAVE to buy the friggin' 120 gig-er.
Oh well, bye bye $179.99 (I think that's how much they are.)
and yet I STILL cannot play Evil Dead: Regenerations. Bastages!
great! how big was the average x-box game? the 20 gig is really only like 13 and if each game is 5 gigs im screwed.
Hot damn that's good news. How about adding Mechassault to that list, MS? Since it's not backward compatible yet, you should, you know, get to work on that.
Will the old games have achievements built in? I guess not, but it would be a selling point.
games to try
fable
kotor
maybe ninja gaiden
yay
what would be cool is if you owned a game on the virtual console you could somehow prove it and download it for free and not have to deal with backward comp issues. fix my lighting in Thief!!
@faralcane: meaning own the disc version of game
Oh man I might get a 360 for birthday next...I am hoping they drop the Elite price by $50 to make it easier to afford for a 15 year allowance
Eh.
I guess the good thing is you won't hear that disk drive spin up anymore, just the hard drive.
Glad I bought an Elite now.
link borked? story pulled?!
Where can I find the rest of the details concerning the Fall update?
@Jcnet: The downloads will be using the same stuff that makes disc games backwards compatible, so I doubt it'll affect that.
This is a really nice surprise. I just wish the hard drive situation didn't suck so much on the 360. With the PS3 I know I can back up my drive, stick in a regular cheap PC drive and continue on. With the 360 it's a nightmare of expensive propriety drives, cable transfers and subsequent broken arcade games :(
Hopefully Phantom Dust will be put up too - talk about a classic that deserves a bigger audiance.
@d0mino: O NOEZ!
lol, take that sony. Stuff you PS1 downloads :P
@Witzbold: O YEZ! (?)
not very original, but a great addition to Live.
hopefully we'll see some titles that aren't backwards compatible released.
Given that I'm in the market for a 360, looks like I'm now specifically in the market for a 360 Elite since I want to "catch up"; I never played a Halo game, and don't think it'll be easy finding H1/2 in my language given where I am ...
I'm glad to know you guys realize just how awesome Jet Set Radio Future is. Not many people I know do. It was amazing. And I got it for $3 at gamestop with some other racing game I never played. What a freaking deal.
Heh Heh...
They've pulled the article. Microsoft don't want us knowing this yet.
Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts, please!
Yeah, cuz it's so hard to track down old Xbox games, you can get pretty much any of them for less than $15 - used anyway. And how will you find room on that 20gb drive???
@Ecks: The good games yes it is a bit hard to track down. Even harder if you are in Japan and there were not that many released to begin with.
@Ecks: Backwards compatability tends to be imperfect, and since most of the 360's noise comes from the disc drive, playing it off the hard drive will give your ears some sweet relief.
And the 20gig drive has enough space, so long as you only intend to keep one game at a time... which is pretty retarded, actually, but what the hey. That's what the bigger one is for.
As nice an IDEA as this is, I can't help but think of the PS3's PS1/PSP "catalogue."
I want you all to brace yourselves.
I bought a PS3 tonight.
I know.
Now, back to my point. There's only like 10 damn games on that thing, at about $10 a pop. So, as nice an IDEA as this is, I'll wait until we see a little more content on there before I sign away on this being a win. But they're off to a good start, I'll say that much.
Now if they'd just fix the BC for Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
InsomniaBob. Now officially waiting for the release of the Dual Shock 3. (Seriously, what is up with the Sixaxis? I've handled heavier frisbies.)
@Moonshadow101:
Once you initially load a backwards compatible game, the DVD no longer runs while you play the game.
Yes yes, all fine and dandy.
NOW BRING MORE GAMES B/C!
Yeah yeah disc drive and shit, but I only have 5 Xbox games. More might come depends on my mood.
3/5 of those games are B/C with 360 DOA3, DOAU, and NGB. The ones that aren't are DOAXBVB, and GV. If Microsoft BCs those two games I'd be one happy gamer.
I hope this download thing doesn't replace the BC updates, seriously I don't want to pay for games that I already own so I can play them on a 360.
If they can have that Barbie Horse game BCed they can have my two games BCed.
I wouldn't mind downloading Xbox games that I didn't own though. Could be fun.
Over all glad to see they're doing this.
now when they say Europe they mean England right?
*groan*
@Sento_Naninaki: That was my first thought as well. Nintendo's VC has actually been pretty good thus far, but Sony...oi. Their downloadable games would print money if they just put some FF games on there, perhaps the first MGS, maybe Silent Hill. That would seem to be the logical move...right? I mean, if MS has Halo on their VC, Nintendo has Mario on theirs, shouldn't Sony pony up with their big name IPs?
wow thats ridiculous. i wonder how much space they will take up... good thing iv got an elite. il prob just get halo off the bat, as iv never owned it. i never got an xbox and now il be able to get like the 4 games i missed out on lol. il prob also get fable at first.
If they add an Xbox game to their store that hasn't already been fixed for backward compatibility in disc form, will it coincide with such a BC patch, or will the downloadable version be the only working version of the game for your 360? Personally, I like Faralcane's idea...
$15?! You can get Crimson Skies at GS for $3! And it's BC!
@KidU: Exactly, now lets see if they can save the queen, metaphorically speaking. ~stares at PS3~
If they integrate these into the 360 like Arcade games rather than BC games then I'll be all over them. I never liked how you can't stay signed into 360 Live when playing an Xbox game nor can you view the guide button.
Achievements wouldn't hurt either.
@KidU:
Yeah... thing is...
Microsoft OWNS Halo
Nintendo OWNS Mario
Sony doesn't own Metal Gear Solid, or Silent Hill. Konami would have to ok it. Why I don't know, maybe we'll see them when MGS4 and SH5 comes?
Farenheit? Score! I've been waiting for an excuse to play through Indigo Prophecy for a second time.
Anyone know if they are adding achievements to the old games?
@Sailorcancer: Yea but sony has always relied on third party support in the past, so whats the hold up now ?
@Sento_Naninaki:
Maybe we should ask Konami that question. I don't know what Sony has done and what Sony hasn't done to do it. Who knows maybe they sent a request to do it for Konami, and Konamis like. MUHA I'll wait.
I say... we email konami and say "whats the hold up bub?"
Great idea if they also change the DRM policy.
