What better way to capitalize on a hit product? Rip it off! Ladies and gents, may I introduce the "Wee." It's not a game machine, but a DVD player that was discovered in at a Tokyo retailer. Hey, it may not play games, but the Wii won't play DVDs, so all is good!
Thanks Landon!

Two VCRs taped together.
And let the sex jokes commence... not yet... wait for it... now.
Dodgey bastards...
"look honey i bought you a wii"
"yay!"
opens package
"...."
Um, ok? So, am I gonna find a 063 on the market that plays VHS tapes? Am I also going to find a PSE that plays vinyl records?
On a second thought... I'm gonna go buy a record player now.
You CAN'T tell me that doesn't violate SOME kinda copyright law.
This is kinda old news but worth bringing up again. I just hope that not too many people fall for this trick during the holiday season, or else there will be a lot of pissed off kids.
Fu-sion-HA! God forbid my childhood DBZ reference...
What would happen if you fused the Wii and the Wee together? I pray they'd change the name THEN.
It's small, geddit?
THAT ROCKS!
How diffrent is the copyright laws in JPN compared to USA?
4,980 Yen how much would that be in dollars?
If it's a cheap (and somewhat quality) multi-region DVD player, it might be worth a purchase.
Christmas: Wee in a box
Hanukkah: Wee in a box
Kwanzaa: a Wee in a box
Every single holiday a Wee in a box
Over at Jack Thompson's house a Wee in the box!
Mid-day at the EB Games a Wee in the box
Backstage at TGS a Wee in box~
It's my wee in a box!
The Wee will, what NintenDON'T!
...
I'm sorry, I hate myself now for that pun.
@PTTSeven: Thanks for ruining my day.
The above two comments just made my night
@Elly: That couldn't have been more perfect for this. Way to go!
Pretty sad when a knockoff "Wii" can play DVD's out the box, and the real one can't Good job Nintendo!
O gad.
Iwata laser beams in 5...4...3...
I wonder what the Wee's version of the Virtual Console would bring. hmmmm...
Billy Blanks martial arts movies!?
First Wee then Whees then Wis. Whats next?
"Huney, I got you that console"
*Opens*
"That's not a wii, it's not a Wii at all"
"But sweety, the name says Penis"
It comes with a weemote to fast forward, stop, and eject pirated DVDs, right? NO TIME TO PLAY.
@ssjmichael: And why does it need to play DVDs? Even this thing is probably half the price.
I bet this is on the side of the box: "Watch all your exercise videos on DVD!"
wow!!! does that play Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? LOL!!!!
@TheJordanator: Win.
Oh god hahaha.
Should we expect a review of the "Wee" from Dr. Ashen soon?
So now I can rock games and movies from my living room with the 'Wii Wee' setup?!
I thought Nintendo were insane when they said "Wii" would disassociate itself from "wee", or urine. Recently, I've start to realise that it has, but never has this realisation been more lucid than when I saw that box. The first thing I thought was "what a blatant rip-off", rather than "hur hur that says wee wee".
Good job Nintendo.
its not a bad looking dvd player, but im sure nintendo will eventually release a firmware upgrade that will allow for dvd/cd play, it should be pretty simple since the homebrew community has already done it.
Very funny. and very awesome as well.
Obviously just a wacky coincidence. I don't think a company would intentionally try to use the popularity of the Wii to bring attention to their product.
What would be nice is if Nintendo made a firmware update to allow you to use any external DVD drive to play through the Wii.
I would be greatly impressed if they didn't make a proprietary add on and gave the end user a choice.
i'd buy that for a dollar!
@Sabre_Justice:
You do realize the Wii could play DVD movies if Nintendo just releases a firmware right? They intentionally decided not to for whatever reason. The question you should be asking is, why shouldn't the Wii have DVD support already?
@TalKeaton:
I don't think any copyright laws were actually violated. You copyright the name as it is written exactly. You can't enforce that on names that may be similar sounding. There're plenty of examples of products that share similar sounding names.
Plus I don't think they violated any patent infringement either since the Wee doesn't do anything that the Wii does. All it does is play DVDs, nothing more.
The stated reason that it doesn't play DVDs is so that Nintendo doesn't have to pay for the licensing cost.
Why they haven't sold an DVD player download or dongle is still a mystery.
@ssjmichael:
Not exactly. Nintendo already confirmed that it needs more than a firmware upgrade to allow for DVD playback. Hence they're releasing a new version of Wii next year that has that feature.

I am truly shocked this is from Japan and not China. And if someone truly feels the need to rip off the Wii, please invent something I can "tele-strate" or appear to shoot annoying people on TV with using Wii motion controls. (Insert your least favorite TV personality here, my list would be too long)...but not only could I shoot John Madden's obvious-stating ass, I could steal his monopoly on the yellow pen thingy.
@valkyriex:
That article is from pre-launch. The Wii is currently using a DVD drive. As the person above you said, the main reason it doesn't have movie playback enabled is likely because they didn't shell out the money for licensing fees. I don't see a new Wii being necessary at all for this.
@valkyriex:
Also read this recent article that I just googled and tell me the Wii can't play DVD's without hardware manipulations: [www.computerandvideogames.com]
With some mod chips offering DVD9 compatibility, there have been reports that some Wiis need minor hardware adjusting to go beyond the first DVD layer. Which kinda buries all dreams of an out-of-the-box DVD player channel or hardware add-on.
Tell you what: I'd really love a DVD player that looks exactly like the Wii and can be placed on top or side by side with it.
Unfortunaetly most soccer moms cant tell the difference, and little Johnny will get a knock off DVD player for xmas. Pwned.
Haha. Wow. Even if it at least looked decent below a Wii, the thought of this shoddy piece of machinery breaking would be reason enough not to buy one.
@zosh: My thoughts also. I'm needing a new DVD player, why not one that fits in perfectly with the other machine on the shelf?
Practical joke time! Delight, and then disappoint, a friend by telling them you found a "Wee" for only $45.
My only problem with the Wii's inability to play DVDs is the fact that it's controller is a damn remote, so it seems extra silly that it won't do it.
@poematik14: What? Little Johnny wants a PS3. It's the soccer mom who wants the Wii. Get your demographics straight.
Okay that's just sweet. If I give someone $20 will they go buy it for me? I'd be the envy of all with the WiiWee setup in my house. No one would want to leave.
