Wing Commander Tourney

There's going to be a bit of a throw-down tonight on the Xbox Live Arcade. Electronic Arts is hosting a Wing Commander Arena tournament tonight on the cade. The tourney will be between a bunch of editors. I'm not sure who all is going to be participating. Ron Workman over at Dtoid says he's in, but I've not heard anyone else chattering about this... I hope it's not just the two of us. The winner of the tourney gets a $6,400 prize pack. If fate intervenes and gives everyone else playing in the tourney simultaneous heart attacks and I actually win the thing, I will be giving it away on Kotaku. But again, don't hold your breath. I will be livecasting the tourney, or my role in it, tonight at 8 p.m. Specific. ( :p ) Hit the jump for the list of stuff I won't be winning to giveaway to you and for the rules. Feel free to post pro-tips for me in comments. I truly suck at the game.

Grand Prize
• 50" 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV
• Theater System with Progressive-Scan
• Xbox360 Elite
• Extra Controller
• 4X Xbox Live Gold Membership
• Wing Commander Arena + 11,200 Microsoft Points

Four Runners-up will each receive:
• 1 Xbox360 Elite videogame and entertainment system
• 11,200 Microsoft Points

Da Rules
Qualifying Rounds: Qualifying rounds will begin at 8:00PM PST on 7/30/07 via Xbox Live Arcade.
A. This tournament is a free for all, and editors are allowed to choose what ships they want to use.
B. The Tournament will start with 2 rounds of 16 person free for all up to 25 frags. The 8 editors with the
highest frag count at the end of those rounds advance to the next round which will be 1 round up to 25 frags.
The 4 editors with the highest frag count at the end of that match go to a 4 man free for all up to 25 frags.
The 2 editors with the most frags go to a hosted "bear pit" match to see who can get to 20 frags first. There
is going to be a splinter bomber ship in the pit with you and frags against him count as well. The editor who
gets to 20 frags first wins the prize!
C. In the event of a tie, there will be a sudden death match between the two tying parties in a 1 vs. 1 match
with the rogue bomber in the bear pit. The party with the highest score at the end of the match will be
declared the winner.

So will any other Kotaku Editors be gettin their mojo on in the eternal darkness that is space? Or is it just you King of the Space Pirates who will be representing the Kotaku crew?

  • Brian, have you considered the tax implications of winning this system and then giving it away?

  • Probably has to do with the lack of interest in the game. Seriously all you hear is people complaining about this game before it even came out.

  • I thought there were labour laws that prevented the torture of staff nowadays.

Forcing a bunch of gaming editors to compete not only in a game but a complete tournament of this abortion of a game(don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the franchise, just now this particular iteration) is outright cruel.

  • Is this US only? Because I really NEED a 50" full HD tv.
Altough I sucked at subspace so I don't think I have any chance.

Good luck! I've bookmarked every post with little bits of something countable in them for the last three months, so I'm ready for a contest! (Stupid party hats! How I loathe thee!)

    :)

  • @T-man: Ill just expense the taxes. :)

  • Giving it away on Kotaku! I know you don't think you'll win, but still, Your my hero!
    On a related note:
Go Crecente! Your our man, If you can't do it... we'll understand! :)

    @floppylobster:
    Lol

  • Awesome, I love the live feed. I should be good and drunk by then too.

A modest prize or bragging rights for a tourney between editors is one thing... but $8000 in prizes for a small, selected group tournament on an XBLA game?

It's increasingly curious that game publishers are putting journalists in this sort of "conflict of interests" position. On one hand, it's great to see venues like Kotaku and others openly announce their refusal to accept gifts and then giving prizes away to the public...

... but I keep hearing about publishers offering rather exorbitant gifts/prizes to journalists (EGM editor Dan Hsu made mention of this sort of activity and EGM's policy in a recent podcast).

It can't be hard to remain on the up-and-up in the game journalism business anymore. A 50" 1080p TV hardly counts as the usual "swag"... especially for an XBLA game.

Considering the dismal reviews the game as been recieving, this is certainly an interesting ploy to get people playing. I hope it works.

Honestly, the game isn't even half as bad as the reviews it's been getting say it is, they released a fucking awesome manual to go along with it which is worth the money to me all by itself, and the more people buy it, the more of a chance EA will give the greenlight for a new true Wing Commander title. So for fuck's sake, if you're a WC fan, buy the damn game.

My greatest question is, will there be love for the hut hut tonight?

  • There's a Wing Commander game for the 360??

  • I tried the demo of the game yesterday night and hated it, something just didn't feel right about the way it controlled.

  • @goddessakasha: Barely, it has little to no reference to the Wing Commander series other than the title. I just got it late last night so I cant give a detailed opinion of the game...but my current feeling is "Meh".

  • Unless the winner gets to trash the game and force EA to make a REAL Wing Commander game than count me out!!!

  • seriously a conflict of interest. If this were open to all players it would be fair, but to only alow journalists to play for prizes is clearly unethical at best. I do enjoy the game and look forward to seeing how this little shinaigan turns out, however I will be disapointed that the prizes won't goto the fans, just to an already well compensated journalist. (Since the un-paid one doubts said skill to win.)

  • Too bad you have to play a POS game to win.

  • I will also be in the tournament to try and take it away from you :D Better get some practice in :D

  • @floppylobster:
its not the result of banning its that the game sucks =).

  • Controls are a bit let down. It just doesn't feel fun to control the ship at all. It's like a patch work of different control schemes without any consistent thought.

  • Should have read "big let down."

  • Image of Scazza Scazza at 05:08 PM on 07/30/07 *

Someone didn't think this one through. Bearpit is a minimum of FOUR players, so doing a 1 on 1 in bearpit WONT work...

  • Image of Scazza Scazza at 05:09 PM on 07/30/07 *

Oops, didn't read that too good, I guess there will be a host+bomber ship in the final 2 melee... but still kinda sucks, why not just do a duel?

  • @Atheist Jew: I hate EA for what they did to Origin, the gutting of the Wing Commander franchise, and... well... just for being EA.

But you're right, that manual was just a 12 out of 10 on the best things ever scale *LOVED the WC manuals, just got you into the game. Chris Roberts: king of immersion and storytelling*. It just shows someone, somewhere in EA, still loves WC as the rest of us.

A new (real) Wing Commander game... IT COULD STILL HAPPEN!

    BUY THE GAME!

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 05:27 PM on 07/30/07 *

@Brynj: If there is a new WC, less Luke Skywalker plz.

  • Hey, Jonathan from Achieve360Points.com here. I'll be playing in the tournament tonight along with everyone else.

You won't be getting any trash talk out of me. Make sure you have fun and finally, good luck Brian!

  • If I remember correctly...

Dralthi have a wide turning radius along their vertical axis. Use that to your advantage and get stick close to their engines and slam em with your Mass Drivers. Your HS Missles will do the rest.

  • I'm a mod over at Achieve360Points.com, and I gotta say, "Monster 2 of 2" has been practicing like crazy, so you might want to be careful there Crecente!
