The sharper eyed among you might notice that the CBS News story I pointed to early today doesn
t have the Goebbels quote I referenced (and stuck in my headline.) That
s because the whole friggin question and answer was apparently, and unceremoniously, chopped from the column. I can only guess that someone higher up than the writer freaked out when they saw the reference. Here
s to a free press. Here for your amusement, and to kick mud in the face of The Man, is the chopped Q and chopped A that I had cached:
What percentage of all games made would you say are violent, based upon your previous definition of violence in video games?
This gets to a fundamental lie being propagated by the video game industry, including Doug Lowenstein, the Joseph Goebbels of the industry. Yes, a majority of game titles are not violent, but the titles that sell overwhelmingly well are the violent titles. GTA [Grand Theft Auto series] has sold 30 million units, with San Andreas expected to hit 20 million on its own. It's the #1 seller in the world right now. That fact alone does not square with ISA and ESRB's dodge that "the majority of games are not violent or M-rated." What matters is how many units delivered are violent, and to whom they are being delivered.
